Long time player - some questions after long hiatus

Hello! I was super involved in Redemption years ago. My name is Brandon West, I was Lightningninja or something like that on the forums. I haven't played in probably 5 years or so, since college. Wondering if you guys can answer some questions. The last set I played with was Disciples or Thesaurus, can't remember which one came later.

1. Anything big changed, like new card types or game modes or rules? It looks like there are clay heroes now, is that the biggest change?

2. Are there tournaments anywhere in Southern California?

3. Has the game expanded or declined?

Thanks for any help! Not sure I'll get back into it, but I'm thinking about it.

First, welcome back!  Glad to see you return!

1. So Disciples was created later than TxP.  Lots of things have changed since then.

I/J starter decks introduced a new card facing.  Special abilities are no longer placed on the pictures and are included in the verse box.

Early Church introduced Clay as a new good brigade.  It also introduced territory class characters.  Just like the enhancements, the characters activate when placed in territory.

Persecuted Church was an expansion of sorts of Early Church.  Expanding upon the clay and adding some very high quality cards.

Cloud of Witnesses introduced "cloud cards" and with it the cloud symbol on some of the cards of that set.  Was a great set for both O.T. & N.T.  The characters were the "Hall of Faith" or "Cloud of Witnesses" so they were O.T.  But we got some very high quality N.T. enhancements with the Faith of * and others.

Revelation of John, introduced our new "side board."  Redemption calls it the Reserve and it is basically a (up to) 10 card bonus pile of anything you want (except dominants & lost souls).

Fall of Man gives all colors reserve access and is just the continuation of wonderful sets put out by the elders & play testers!

So yes, a ton has changed.

2.  I live across the country so I have no idea.

3.  Because the last several sets have been such high quality that Rob has sold out of them several times, and apparently has done the same with this set.  So I would say that Redemption is on the upswing!

Edit: Yeah, what what he said  ::) ^

Welcome back!
1)
There are tons of new changes, the biggest being clay, as you mentioned, and the first cards were banned just a few weeks ago. The liners are now banned from all tournaments.
There is also a Reserve pile now, which is a smaller deck of up to 10 cards that can only be targeted by cards that target the Reserve. Example: Forbidden fruit (from the newest set "Fall of Man"): territory class, "Look at an opponent's hand. Take an OT enhancement from Reserve."  cards like this allow you to have a larger card pool to take from during the game without slowing down your deck.

2)
can't answer that unfortunately. I know there are several active players in california who are on the boards regularly though, they'll probably post tournament info soon.

3)
Last year's set was the most ordered in the history of all redemption. This year, Rob printed twice the number of boxes he did last year for the first print and has already sold out. so, it's definitely expanded.

Thanks for the responses so far! So basically, both due to new mechanics and new high quality cards, to be competitive I'm gonna need cards from the last several sets. =)

Yes. There are two specific cards from the last two sets that are needed for competitive play. The Second Coming is a good dominant from the Cloud of Witnesses set that allows you to search your deck or discard for any good dominant, but it may not be included in a deck with New Jerusalem. It costs $120, but you could probably get one for cheaper if you asked on the boards. the other is three woes, a dominant that is bot good and evil. you place it in your territory as a good or evil dominant and you may negate a card of different alignment until your next turn. it costs $100, but again, you can get it cheaper if you ask around on the boards.

Technically, neither of these are actually necessary for competitive play, but they greatly help, for obvious reasons.

Welcome back, Brandon! (For those unfamiliar with him, Brandon was a top player in T1 during his tenure and won MP at Nats 2009)

A player can still be highly competitive without The Second Coming as long as they use New Jerusalem. In fact 2 cards in RoJ help you get NJ faster.

Three Woes is probably in every top deck though.
Have you visited the Land of Redemption today?

So people are opting to get Son of God faster, rather than using it with New Jerusalem? That's definitely a big meta shift. I would have thought SoG and NJ are still staples.

Thanks Gabe! Good to see you still active. It's funny, I was checking the Wikipedia page for Redemption and didn't know they put national champions and saw my name. I showed a friend and he said "yeah but who's that Gabe guy he looks way better than you."  ;D They weren't wrong!

Good to know about three woes. If there was a competitive scene in socal, I would probably try to get a couple boxes of the newer sets and work from there, so I could hope to get some of those newer cards. It looks like the ultra rares/legacy rares are also differently designed now? No more gold borders? =(

Not quite, you can use TSC to grab Son of God from discard and play it a second time. It frees you up to play Son of God more strategically

I missed "or discard." Yeah that makes sense.

Brandon good to hear from you!

As far as I know the game is inactive in Southern California. Most of us old timers have had life get in the way and have retired or taken a extended hiatus from the game.

I still like to drop in on the forums from time to time to check on the game and give my two cents  :P

I haven't seen any tournaments this year, but I know last year Michael Leung hosted a Regionals with Jonathan Gomez (who is now living on the east coast). Scott and Andrew Kramer attended, and Kurt and Bryon Hake showed up for a bit.

Who knows? It might just take one person willing to organize to get a playgroup going again.  8)

Michael Leung is Michael_of_the_star here on the forums. He's the one who has been organizing tournaments for the last two years. I would definitely reach out to him. There are quite a few people that will come and play at a tournament if you organize one and let them know. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a pm.

WELCOME BACK BRANDON!!!
Still have my ReyZen deck pouch! I saw nats in Texas, but don't think I could make it this year. I work as a tax accountant now, and that's a busy time for us. If it was ever in an earlier month, I'd strongly consider driving or flying out. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Brandon good to hear from you!

OTHER BRANDON. Good to see you still semi-involved man, been a while. Has Bryan retired?

Good to know, thanks! Wow that's a lot of throwback names, that's awesome. I would definitely try to show up for that.

Haha thanks for the shoutout Roy! One of these days I'll have to make it to another nats.

I'm currently freelancing and teaching trombone out in Southern California and my schedule prevents me from leaving for large chunks of time. One of these days I'll post a topic with what I've been up to!

OTHER BRANDON. Good to see you still semi-involved man, been a while. Has Bryan retired?
Around the time I was starting to take my hiatus from the game Bryon was starting to shift out of role of hosting tournaments. I think Bryon still plays every now and then like Justin said, he just doesn't host tournaments any more.

Talk to both Michael and Jonathan (Xonathan) about what the state of the game is out here. They were the most active cats and would be able to tell you what's up.
3 Prophets Packs ftw
