Redemption and Homeschool

I am considering getting a booth at the Great Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati at the end of March. My only hang-up is that I am not well versed in the realm of homeschooling. If you have incorporated Redemption into your homeschooling, how did you do it? What would you say is the most valuable thing Redemption has to offer a homeschooling family? Any wisdom and insight in these areas is welcome and appreciated.

Mr.Underwood might be a good person to ask. I think he did some early homeschooling with his kids, and might have used redemption with it.

I've been homeschooled since birth. This is a quote directly from my mom.

"I bought 3 starter decks for our boys for Christmas one year. They were 50% off. Great deal x3. I have triplets. I liked the pictures and the Bible verses. Handy for traveling I thought.  :)  I had NO idea that we would end up with a trunk full of cards in boxes and binders traveling to local, regional, and National tournaments.

I'm thankful I bought them for many reasons. When they first started collecting the boys would get out there binders every day as we listened through the Bible. Each time they heard a card referenced in our listening they would pull the card and whoever had the most at the end of our time got a prize. We tracked everyone's points. Our boys know way more about the characters in the Bible than I ever knew at their age. The cards became little "learning nuggets" for all of us. As they started playing in tournaments hosted locally by Ken Locklin, they developed a great circle of friends to hang out with and "play cards". Putting together decks and developing strategy based on critical thinking skills has paid off big time. All three of them have excelled in their math studies, logic studies and problem solving capabilities. I believe that their ability to strategize by learning to create competitive decks was critical in their ability to put together a winning Mock Trial Team last year. Last year they also competed in a Regional Robotics competition and that ability to strategize against the opponent also paid off as they walked away with a second place trophy out of 60 teams.

Another HUGE benefit is that we see other homeschoolers ALL THE TIME and the redemption cards are a great  conversation tool especially for boys who don't always know quite what to talk about to get the conversation going. They always have starter decks on hand to give away in hopes of getting more friends to play with . They host and attend Strategy Game Nights and the redemption cards often make an appearance. Ken Locklin also modeled for them how to trade Pokemon cards for redemption cards in an effort to give kids an alternative because some parents are not that thrilled with the Pokemon cards for various reasons.

They have developed some great relationships that were started around the game table and some of those relationships have turned into mentorships as they head out into the world. They even have a Redemption dad! I think his name is Roy! Thanks Roy!

Homeschool parents are ALWAYS looking for great games to engage the minds of their children at home and in group settings with friends. No couch potatoes here! We also have had to learn some budgeting strategies and how to spend or not spend your money on CARDS! And the fact that these are based on Biblical topics is a HUGE plus for a Christian family.

Best wishes and prayers for a successful booth if you decide to do one. This is one of the BEST homeschool conventions that continues to offer a great vendor hall with many product options. The speakers are always well planned and I always hear good reviews from friends who attend. Some moms will travel there in van loads to soak it all in. Maybe we'll see you there and if you have a demo table the boys might just sit and play a few games all weekend while I do some shopping.  :)

Travis, Feel free to give me a call if you have any other questions. Noah can pm you my contact information."

I'm sure she could write more. I needed the computer back so I could keep working on my Type-2 deck. :P :)

I have taught Redemption to each of my kids starting when they were 7 years old.  We did do a bit of homeschooling with them, but not a ton.  I certainly can't top the testimonial for homeschooling that tripleplay's mom wrote.  Wow, that was great!

I can tell you that my kids all have really enjoyed our Redemption experiences together.  Not only the games that we play within our family, but also the family trips to tournaments all over the country.  My two daughters who were old enough to travel with me to the National tournament in NYC both count that as one of the highlights of their lives :)

Try googling Ohio homeschooling or Christian homeschooling. You'll probably find some more information that way. If there's a Mardels(Christian bookstore) up there, check it out. They've got a good selection of Christian homeschooling material. Homeschooling has come a long way since I graduated('96). Good luck and God bless ya
We will be going home to Jesus soon!
