I can't seem to find any rules as to if these cards can only be played on a character of matching brigade during a battle in order to place them on a Lost Soul. Can they be played directly from your hand onto a Lost Soul? Sort of like Set-Aside cards or Territory class enhancements?

Unless something (like High Places) allows them to be played outside of battle, they must be played in battle. And even with something like High Places, you'd need a character of matching brigade in your territory to be able to play it on before you could place it.
