Title: Biggest booster draft decisions
Post by: Josh on May 27, 2016, 08:32:53 AM
Title says it all.

My biggest booster decision happened last year at a District tournament.  I opened my TexP pack and saw Mayhem and Warriors Moses.

My pick:  Mayhem

I bet the guy picking after you was a bit surprised... :o

I honestly can't think of any that I've had like that...in fact the last couple of drafts I've done, I've been pretty fortunate to have some obvious first picks in the packs I've opened.

Oh he was.  I was playing with 2 other players, and every time they opened a pack, they gave a shout of joy because of 1 awesome card.  I kept opening mediocre packs with no obvious first-drafters, until I finally got a good one...  ...that had 2 legitimate first-drafters.

Later, Covenant With Moses was floating around in the draft...  I let it go past a few times before I finally drafted it.  The guy who picked Moses never noticed it lol

I mean Haman's Plot is never a bad choice but Holy Grail is so versatile in Booster since you can give yourself whatever brigade Hero you need on a given turn. I think I would have taken Grail and then never attacked the guy who I passed the Plot to...  ;D

My biggest booster decision happened last year at a District tournament.  I opened my TexP pack and saw Mayhem and Warriors Moses.

I can't fathom how this could've been a hard choice. Mayhem or Grapes are auto-picks no matter what because of how unbelievably game-changing they are in booster. However, if they weren't in your TexP pack, a Fbtn character would have been the next best thing, outside of maybe Harvest Time or Holy Grail (unlikely as those are).

For the most part in booster, the first round is either the easiest or the hardest, especially with Texp. After that, it's the second round that is most difficult, I think. If you don't luck out with an obvious best pick, things can go down to the wire. I couldn't tell you the number of times I've had to make hard choices.

Do I pick Unholy Writ or Battle Cry?
Do I pick ANB or Hur?
Do I pick DoN or that extra Hero?
Haman's Plot or Emperor Claudius?
Jepthah or Ehud?
Aachan's Sin or DoU?
Blue Bart or Red Peter?
Garrison or Nero?

I think one time many years ago I got a Priests pack with several rares. That was tough. :P
Some fun things:

Some years back, for two or three state drafts in a row, I got Pentecost in each Priests pack.
I've had a Wrath of Satan passed to me after getting a Garrison in my pack.
I've had a Warriors Moses get passed to me on the second round, while a transfig was passed to me earlier from Ap.
I've seen a draft where someone had a Michael, TSA, and Gabriel, all from Kings. He got some great passes. :o

Thank you Q, you reminded me of a good one I had.

I once opened a TexP pack to find Warriors Moses, Ehud and Transfiguration. Moses and Ehud are obviously both ridiculously good in booster, and if the Transfiguration hadn't been in the pack as well, I could have easily picked Ehud first. However, I figured the Transfiguration would come back around for my second pick in my pack. Imagine my surprise when the pack got back to me and the Transfiguration was gone...but the Ehud was still there... :o The guy after me had already drafted a Prophets Moses so he took the Transfig. The next guy also had Gold offense so he couldn't pass up the TexP Martha, and then I can't recall what the third guy took but he must have had zero Blue. I was also passed a TexP Asahel and this was a tin draft where I had gotten FooF tin 9 (Red/Syrians). Suffice to say, I ended up getting first.  8)

I believe it was a state tournament that this happened in. It was late into the draft and I was playing OT red. I open the pack and see Bravery of David, Ahimelek, and Ishmaiah. It was an absurdly good draft for me as a whole though.
