Cactus Game Design Message Boards

Regarding new cards being legal for tournament play this season, I gave this a good deal of consideration.  For those of you that have been playing for more than 10 years, you know that we used to release new sets in the late Spring.  Starting with Angel Wars we switched to releasing the new set at Nationals.  We did this to give players and judges more time to get up to speed on a new set before holding the larger tournaments.  However, we also gave up a lot in terms of sales and promotion by not having cards available during summer events.

I realized this decision will catch some of our players by surprise.  I recognize the thought and effort that goes into designing a deck, testing it in tournaments and fine tuning it in preparation for state, regional and the national tournament.  I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding with my decision.  I am doing it to boost the sales and create more buzz during the summer.

In a small effort to help everyone get up to speed, I am going to waive the tournament hosting fee for local tournaments held in June and July.  I just ask that the host pay $8.00 to cover shipping charges.  The key stipulation to hosting a free local tournament is that the host must have Cloud of Witnesses cards available for sale at the tournament.   E-mail me if you are interested in hosting a tournament with Cloud of Witnesses cards. 

Finally, you may run up to 3 categories at the local tournament for the $8.00 shipping fee.

This is awesome Rob!  I will defiantly be trying to put together a local and get this product as soon as I can!  Thanks for everything you do!

Yes, that is the plan.

At one point Rob had mentioned using this model:

"The remaining 11 cards will be 1 Warriors and 10 random cards from Apostles, Kings, Patriarchs and Angel Wars."

There were other options discussed as well, using a mix of those sets. I don't know if it's been finalized but that should give you a good idea.

This is awesome. The only reason I dont like buying packs is, I have a copy of every card in the game (from beginning to 2010) so when I get only 3-4 or the current set and the others are all spread out they just keep piling up. At that point I'm kinda forced to buy complete sets or buy singles. Although we got a new shop in our town and maybe I can convince him to get a box so I can host local tourneys again.

Its true. I do want muliples of some thanks for waving the tourney fees Rob! The cards that I have seen so far look awesome!

Not sure if this is the place for this, but just wanted to throw this information out there.  I showed the new cards to the wife (who has a general understanding because of all the tournaments I've hosted, and her "goofy" husband that shows her cards he is really excited about, but she has never played a single game), but she thought the picture of the cloud was very straight forward and thought it would greatly help simplify the game for the younger players.  So then I showed her the article Gabe wrote about the icons.  She thought that was again a nice and easy way to see and understand a game that she knows is extremely complex.  But upon showing the full article she did have a couple of concerns.  She being a school teacher saw a minor issue with the grammar (discard AN dragon), but when I explained it stood for the evil character she said ok and left that alone.  The hang up was with the Armor of God enhancement.  She took the sentance after the colon to mean any cross not "that cross," so this would have to be explained in great detail that the colon means only that implied character.  Another thing she pointed out was the color boxes, through the years and different sets the colors have slightly changed which could lead to confusion as to which cards can or can't be targeted.  So my suggestion would be keep it simple:  cloud, cross (hero), dragon (evil character), bible and skull (enhancements).  Possibly sites and fortresses, but I wouldn't go much further than that, because you can "over simplify" things so much that you lose the intent of what you what something to do!

Will the old Versions of these cards count as cloud Heros? Like now if a card does not have judge in the identifier but is obviously a judge, we play them as a judge.  For example will the old Moses count as a cloud hero?
