I take the ACT for the first time tomorrow. I've been studying for quite a while and I think I can get in the 28 or 29 range (that's equivalent to ~1900-2000 on the SAT) if I do well on the math part. I'm so bad at math though .

Just thought I'd throw this out there. Prayers would be cash yo.

I didn't study like at all and I got (I think) a 32 or 33 on it. It's a lot of general knowledge stuff, if you have paid any kind of attention in school up to this point you should be pretty well off.

Haha, there's that, too. They like to throw questions at you that are in one category but don't seem to relate to it at all. Just make sure to read the questions all the way through, evaluate the answers, and then choose.

Agree with the Science part...it's basically "reading comprehension part II, now with some random science!"

For the math section, the questions are typically really logic questions that require knowledge of basic math. For the reading section, I would read the questions before the accompanying sections, so you don't waste time reading a section without knowing what in it will be important. For the writing section, it's not too bad as long as you knows good Inglish, and the Science section is, like I said, basically another reading section.

As for the essay, you should ask someone else for advice. I am a terrible timed essay writer, and barely got average scores on that section of the ACT, SAT and GRE.

Either way, I will add you to my list of people I know to pray for about the ACT tomorrow. Although I think that whichever of you or Nathan gets a lower score should have to take a shot. Unless you both beat my score, in which case I'll chug a 2-Liter

For the essay section, write in standard form. State a clear thesis with a few supporting points. Have an introduction and conclusion. Example:

Topic: Who is more awesome: Saucer or Westy?

When defining who of two people is the most awesome, several things come into play such as entertainment value, personality, and ability to troll online forums. While both Ring Wraith and Rawrlolsauce possess each of these three traits in various amounts, a detailed comparison reveals that Rawrlolsauce is superior to Ring Wraith in all of these categories (<----- THESIS).

What was your score? I'm going to guess a 36.

Bring some money to buy something good to eat during the break. By the end of the test, I was really tired and hungry, and I'm quite sure I would have done better had I ate something. I just couldn't focus.

Take a practice test if you haven't. They're pretty good at giving you a feel of where you need to improve. Spark Notes was what I used (my sister [who tutors ACT students] suggested it).

I scored above 30 in every category (writing isn't scored yet, but that's probably my strongest anyway) with a composite score of 32 so I guess that's good. I felt like I did really poorly though. I hope to get 33+ in every category next time I take it.

Thanks for the prayers. Nathan, even though you didn't agree to it I'm going to bring the Big Red to nationals. Knowing my score makes Jordan's offer a lot more appealing.

Seriously though, nice job. Anything 30 and above should get you into most programs you want to. You probably don't need to take it again unless you want to get into an Ivy League school like Harvard or MIT or something, and in that case you would need to take the SAT anyway. But I can't stop you.

I think I got a 23 on the reading. It really is one of my better subjects, but I was so tired by that point. Whose idea was it to have the test in the morning? It was my lowest score...I got a 32 on english though, so that helped...

I'm probably just going to retake it to increase my chances of a merit scholarship. I'm pretty sure I can get a 34 or 35, so I guess it's worth blowing $50 and a few hours if it increases my chances a fair amount. I'm also kind of looking for a higher test score to compensate for my lack of extra curriculars, right now I only have Phi Theta Kappa and some volunteer stuff (I'll probably be tutoring some next year too, so that'll look good on a resume).

@SK. I haven't even picked a major yet, so I'm no where near picking a school. Philosophy, Poly Sci, and Literature have been my favorite subjects, but I don't want to work at McDonalds my entire life so I'm not doing that. I've taken all the Chem classes the local college has to offer and found them interesting, so that's a possibility. I'll finally be taking a low level calc course next semester, maybe if I'm not as bad at math as I think I am I'll consider Chemical Engineering. I'll probably stay fairly close to home for college, U of MN (probably TC) sounds the most likely.
