Martial Arts Tournament
« on: June 05, 2009, 04:27:21 PM »
I am attending a Karate tournament tomorrow, and was hoping for prayer for safe travel, and protection for all involved.  Pray for no accidents or injuries.  I am excited but apprehensive.  I returned to martial arts training recently after a 5(ish) year Hiatus and am out of shape, but was crazy enough to sign up for sparring.  So any prayer that I don't look like a goof out in the ring would appreciated!  Thanks all.

Thanks for the prayer everyone the tournament was a blast!  I am pleased with how I did, I took third in both Adult Sparring Divisions!  That's pretty cool since I got moved up to the advanced divisions because I was the only beginner in the beginner division.  Praise God for no major injuries, and every one seemed to have a good time.

Not to crash the party, but isn't karate COMPLETELY useless in a real fight? I do believe so...

That depends one what your styles focus is, our style focuses on self-defense, real and effective self defense.  But we also focus on what is an appropriate time to use it (i.e. life or death situations).  The generalization that all karate = useless is inaccurate and unfair to any who practice it regularly.

As I have understood is that the only real use of karate is just the mere discipline you learn, as well as the physical shape you must be in. Otherwise I think it is pretty useless in a real bar fight or hand-hand combat situation.

Have you ever actually trained is your understanding just from what you have read about.  Again generalizing all karate from a few observations is inaccurate.  I respect your right to your opinion but as some one who has been around martial arts for years your information rings false.
