Title: Looking for a Job I Guess...
Post by: BubbleBoy on February 08, 2011, 12:08:49 PM
Well, my dad came into my room today and told me to start looking for a summer job. I've never had a stronger urge to punch him in the face, and that's saying a lot. I really don't want to get a job at all for a few reasons: I have school work to do, I don't want to feel trapped in a box for hours at a time, I would feel uncomfortable taking a job that might help someone with a family (especially when money is of almost 0 interest to me), etc. And I wouldn't even know where to start looking for jobs if I did want one.

If I were to get a job, one of the few options that I can imagine enjoying is something where I can work outside. I would rather haul stuff all day long than flip greasy burgers in a hairnet. In fact, I would prefer life-threatening, body-crushing, limb-losing labor to an office job. I could see myself being a farmer or a lumberjack or something.

I'm realizing now that I don't really know why I am posting this. I almost want to ask for prayers that I don't get a job. But I guess I'm just looking for insight as to what other people think and prayers for insight as to what God thinks...and I needed to vent...venting feels good...

Heh, I felt similarly at first.

I currently work at the library at my college to help pay for my loans. However, I'm beginning to see it as more than just "a job" or "a minor source of income."

I'm getting additional experience helping customers, experience with how businesses are run, and you have something to put on a resume to show you have SOME experience working.

Consider it helping you prepare for the future, rather than earning some cash for the present. Plus, it's really not as bad as you think.  :P

Same here...as a teen I started out doing jobs I hated.  However, what it did do was motivate me to improve my education so that I could do a job (now 2) that I DO love.  And I support a 7 person family at home.  Developing a strong work ethic is probably the most important vocational skill you could develop, and the longer you wait, the harder it will be to develop.  We are in an era where choosing our ideal or preferred job is less likely, so many of us have to tolerate what we can get.  I feel God's presence in my primary calling as a protector and provider for my family, and I do it to the best of my ability, with God's grace and strength. Additionally, work is essentially commanded by God ("He who does not work, does not eat")

Pray for God to provide an accepting heart for work, the blessing of a job (one that you could tolerate to some degree!) and remember to tithe, and God will bless you...I have personal experience with this!

I've had a job since I was 12 and I have enjoyed it.  I guess I'll just pray.

In the last 3 months I've applied to 6 places (Walmart, Target, Culvers, Burger King, Taco John's, and Shopko). I've provided an awesome application, good references, insanely flexible hours, and requested minimum wage (and in the many scenarios when they've requested GPAs, I have a 3.9 in highschool and a 4.0 in college). I've received 1 call, 0 interviews (I was even willing to cut my hair....), and 0 job offers.

You might be in luck, no one wants to hire 16 year olds with no job experience ;_;.

Yes, but I am 17. (Seriously though, minimum wage...)

I guess I'm feeling a little better about this whole thing. Whether or not I actually get a job, I'll do my best to defer to God's direction for me. Thanks all for your input and your prayers. Tomorrow I guess I'll start job hunting...

Don't worry too much Bubbleboy. I didn't particularly want to get a job, but my parents made me, and it was a great expirience. Also, if you look at a more National place (like a Walmart, Wendy's etc [I know you said not a good option but I thought I'd mention this]), if you work a certain number of hours or length of time (i.e. a year), many places will give you a scholarship for college. I know I could have gotten 1000 dollars from my job at Chick Fil A, but sadly, I didn't get the job soon enough so I didn't qualify. That's just something to consider though.

Just imagine yourself in 5 years with or without a job.

Kinda puts things into perspective, doesn't it?

Not really ;).

Just sayin', but the thing that may be the biggest obstacle to you kids getting jobs is the thing you're looking at right now.  Not this thread.  Not the boards.  Your computer.  Seriously, when I was a teenager I was making more than minimum wage....tax free!  And a lot of that was before I turned 16.  What did I do?  I was a scorekeeper at the bowling alley.  Computers took away that job.  Most jobs that computers have taken away were mostly done by teenage kids.  It's most unfortunate.   :-\

And, as a teenage kid, I got a job fixing those very computers.  Hmm...

Good luck BubbleBoy! The only advice I can give is to let God take you where He will

Thanks. This is where I really need prayers. I'm not very good at reading God's messages.

Will do.  Times can be tough, but God's got plans for you.

I'm 18 and just started job hunting yesterday... I live off a street with about 20 fast food joints within a half-mile of each other, and so far the best I've heard is that 3 of these places are looking to hire soon for the spring/summer pick-up. All the others were just straight-up not hiring. :-\

I started out at a Dairy Queen when I was 16. It did help me get my next job. All you have to do to be a good employee is show up on time and have a good attitude.
