Ok, so, the first half came in. I got 30/35 which, in algebra language is somehow 103%. Can someone tell my why this is 103%?

Simple, it was graded on a curve.  Which means you were definitely one of the highest scores, since you ended up over 100%.  That's pretty awesome!  Praise God!

It is really isn't that hard to find X. I just circle it on my paper and declare to the class that I found it. I am glad you did well.

This is why I do not put "Find x" on my tests. I always put "Solve for x in the following equation."

I agree with jmhartz that your teacher must have graded on a curve. I do not grade on curves. My pen always slipped and left a long squiggly line, so I stopped.

No student has ever had a 100% average in my class, and I intend to keep it that way. Therefore, getting over 100% is not only mathematically disturbing, but also an unrealistic goal in the first place.  ;)

Our teacher gave us a POP quiz on the last day of school. It was 100 questions. At the end, it said: Do not do  any of the problems on this test. Just sign your name and have a good summer.

Most of the questions were quadratic formula too. I hate that, it's really hard.

Quadratic formula?  Easy once you know this simple trick:
(To the tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel")
X is equals to negative B
Plus or Minus the square root
of B squared minus 4 AC
all over 2A.

^Will never forget that as long as I live.
Also, if you've got a graphing calculator, I can show you how to program the formula in.

Assuming that the teacher does not reset calculators before tests.....  ;)

Regarding mneumonics, this is the story my students have been told:

"A negative boy was considering the plusses and minuses of going to a radical party, but a square boy showed up so the four awesome cliques left. Thus, the party was all over by 2 Am."

Yeah, I've learned things that way (PEMDAS and such), but this will be stuck in my head until I die.
As to resetting caculators, I was the only one who ever got into programming, etc.  My teacher was ok with it as long as I knew what the original formula was.  (I did)

There are two teams for each grade at our school and the teacher on the other team taught us that. Our teacher said he didn't teach us this because he didn't want to hear "that junky song." ;D
