"Hey Chris! Come look at my T1 Deck!"
"Aren't you just playing Flood?"
"Not this time!"

The above conversation actually took place Friday night as I had my deck laid out and was putting the finishing touches on it. This deck is the result Jeremy and I making a gentleman's agreement to not play our usual decks at this tournament and to try something new. Jeremy played a Throne variant, while I ran this.

The goal of this offense is to set up a powerful band that never runs out of negates and infrequently gets chump blocked. As a result, I decided to run Coliseum, Guardian of Your Souls, and Orphans. Those three cards enable the Ruth offense to do what it was designed to do, which is to overwhelm the opponent with speed and recursion. The big play that this deck can do is to take Salmon the Cloaked with X=3 to band to Boaz the Redeemer/Elders of the City/Obed the Servant with Coliseum down. Boaz fetches "Your God will be My God" from reserve as a counter to Foreign Wives, Elders fetches a Ruth battle winner or negate you already played and Obed draws 3. I'm a huge proponent of that band and it won several souls for me this weekend across my three rounds.

The defense held up tremendously well, as Jeremy's deck was a relentless offensive assault, yet the Demons and Chumps held him off. The defense is trying to connect Judean Mediums to either King of Tyrus or Red Dragon for a CBN Protected EC. Negates are used to further this goal and protected the ECs if they aren't CBN on a block. King Rehoboam and Proud Pharisee enable interesting chump blocks such as Unsuccessful and Strife/Rahab the Defender Tricks. Suicidal Swine Stampede also gets frequently played off Messenger-Proud Pharisee.

Seven Sons of Sceva is my favorite card in the reserve. Running Seven Sons was the key card for me during the tournament, as two of my three games were won because of Seven Sons to Red Dragon when I just needed one more block.

The following will be a write-up of my games from this tournament and how each went. We played three rounds due to attendance.

Round 1 - Jeremy Chambers 5-4 W

Jeremy was running a variation of the Throne decks that were used at Nationals, using Ruth cards instead of Abigail to produce his speed and add Obed the Servant as a disruption element. We both got off to good starts. but mine was slightly more explosive with T1 Obed to shut off some of his consistency. I was able to get around his Syrian defense for the most part, although he got some sort of a dom block off on me early on. He actually got around my Rehoboam+Rahab the Defender Block with Boaz's Sandal which ended with a large amount of cards drawn and a redeemed soul. At this point we are 4-4 going into Jeremy's turn. His offense was very fast and powerful, but I've got to make a block with very few resources left. Jeremy Angel'd Red Dragon early on and king of Tyrus hasn't appeared yet. I've got Wages/Deafening Spirit/Blindness in my hand and Gates of Hell in play with Abbadon. He attacks with the Ruth version of the Throne band, which is still incredibly hard to stop. I block with Messenger to Proud Pharisee to use Wages to add Seven Sons of Sceva to battle which goes to Red Dragon. He plays Royal Parade which gets negated by Deafening Spirit. Jeremy then plays Faith Unbowed which gets negated by Blindness. Jeremy uses Counsel of Abigail to negate Blindness, which then gets negated by using Gates of Hell to add Abbadon to the battle to negate counsel of abigail, bringing blindness back. I get the block as Jeremy is flabbergasted by how many negates I was able to muster that battle. On my turn I attack into Jeremy's King Rezin-Captain of the Chariots band which plays "Destroying Bands" I then proceed to pick off his band of his evil character through toss and my battle winners+negates. We played like 4-5 Enhancements that battle and I used Ride On Victoriously to add his Nahshon the Oracle to battle to get high enough numbers to win the battle, sealing a narrow 5-4 victory.

Round 2 Daylan P. 5-1 W (Buggy D. Clown)

Dayan is a newer player from Alabama that started playing independently of our group and I was very glad to have him at the tournament. He was running a well-constructed Cloud Heroes and Egyptian deck that was missing important dominants like New Jerusalem or Second coming. For the most part this game was just a text book example of how players with limited access to newer cards lose out to players running top level decks. He demonstrated great skill in his use of negates and card choice for his egyptian defense, getting a couple of blocks as we played. I ran away with the game overall and just picked up a fairly fast win well within the time limit.

Round 3 Logan L. 4-4 T

I disdain turtle decks. I disdain Gates of Samaria. Logan and I played a back and forth game that was marred by soul drought and site lock. He droughted most of the game and he drew a soul when I was trying to rescue one with majestic heavens granting access to patmos. I was only able to get two souls through rescue attempts before he finally killed off my offense with a massive banding chain that I ran out of gas to stop. He never saw Dust and Ashes, which allowed me to flying scroll job and then use my demons to lock out the mini relevation angels offense that his deck also had. We played for 5 minutes without either player being able to make any rescue attempt at all. This is the only time I can remember neither player in a tournament game having any heroes left at the end. This was one of the best games I have ever played with Logan in a friendship that goes back to 2010.

Thank you with sharing your deck and the tournament experience! Really nice read. But one question (did not figure it out yet): How does "Your God will be my God" help against Foreign Wives?

I like how the defense turned out, and it obviously faired well. The Seven Sons in the Reserve is a nice play. How was using RoV/AT? That seems like a tough choice over Falling Away but I suppose it can be a nice little surprise for someone tryna pull a DoU or Scattered against your band. Also, I noticed you kept Orphans in there even though you have Swine Stampede, which is probably the right call, but just out of curiosity, did you ever pull off SSS while you had both Wicked and Orphans out?  :P

I never once got to play SSS but I had at least two occasions where I would get to pull that off. Ride on Victoriously was an utter hoss of a card. It was crucial to beating Jeremy. I never got to really use it in the turtle game but I contemplated doing so if needed.

Hi Red, there are only 49 cars listed in the main deck. Do you mind if I ask what the 50th card was? Thanks.

Thunderbunny,
I believe the 50th card was Overcome! from Revelation of John. I'm amazed that somehow I posted a 49 card decklist on here. I do remember playing Overcome in the tournament so I'm sure it was Overcome!
