What to expect at a tournament
« on: June 05, 2009, 12:48:08 PM »

I am going to my first tournament this year and thought it would be nice to know what to expect.  So I had some questions:

How do Promos work at all levels(local, district, state, etc...) Do I get only one, are there options to choose?

How do prizes work, Do I just get the packs/redemption dollars or is there some promo for winning a division in the tournament?

Feel free to add anything else you think a tournament n00b should know!  ;)

Hey bro,

I've been hosting for a bit, so here's the answer to your questions.

Locals and Districts, you (or the host) pick which promo you want to offer as a participation promo. Everyone gets that promo.

States and up, you get all of them that are currently available. You'll get 6 (correct me if I'm wrong) promos to give each person at MD States.

You (or the host) chose whether you wanted packs or Redemption cash for your prizes, and you will have a sheet that tells you how much each place gets. Also, there is a winner's promo (I believe this year was a Harvest Time year, once again correct me if I'm wrong).

You'll have Roy there (right?), so you'll have someone who is well-seasoned with rules, but make sure you have a computer with a copy of the REG (http://www.redemptionreg.com/) on it for reference.

Most of all, have fun! I love hosting tournaments, it's a great time. I hope I can get down there sometime to meet you and your playgroup!

Best,
Marti

Thanks for the quick reply, I am just beginning to process all the questions my playgroup is asking me, since I am a tournament n00b also.  I am looking forward to the tournament.

Also, as I tell my group, don't expect to win the tournament.  It is a lot more fun when you are not trying to be #1.  If you do win, sweet.  If not, then you are not disapointed and you enjoyed the games you played.  Maybe that's just applies to the ones I go to since I always face the Wolfe pack :P.

I have been mentioning that a lot already, especially to the younger one's.  I have a question, is there a lower age limit for tourneys?  I have an 8 year old player who is actually quite good and wants to participate.  I said he could because I forget sometimes that he is 8 he is quite mature for his age.

Nah, my co-playgroup leader's brother was playing at 5.

Quoting Rob, the reason for Redemption is fun and fellowship. :)

There is no age limit.  However, there is a Type A category for younger players that you can host unofficially at your tournaments if the kids are really young and might not enjoy playing against the older players.  At nationals, there is an official type A category, which gives those children a chance to actually compete against one another, instead of being slaughtered against the more experienced players.  At nationals, the stipulations are that the player has not won any RNRS points and is under a certain age, although I forget what the age maximum is at the moment.

I usually encourage the kids to play.  I know from a player's perspective that if I play against a really young player, I win almost always win, but it is a good time to help teach them things about the game.  Usually I get a chance to give strategy advice on deck building or how to play your cards.

Good he will be thrilled, he may also surprise a few ppl.  He has been practicing very hard and working with a small collection of cards.  I hope he wins a few games.
