T2 Only tournament report--now w/ MP report!

Here's my brief tournament report...

Round 1 v Matt Brinkman

I drew my defense very fast as well as the right counters to Matt's strategy. He had no way to break through my defense for most of the game. However, he had ways to band to my defense and subsequently I could not break through my own defense either... Eventually I drew the cards I needed and started picking up LS. During the last round Matt made a mistake that allowed me to get rid of his Son of God (from hand) and that let me walk in for a 6th LS.

Final score: 6-0 Win (time-out)

Round 2 v Gabe Isbell

Tough game for my deck...I tried to be aggressive early but Gabe had the right counters pretty fast. He played patiently (while still drawing very fast) and walked in for freebies in the end.

Final score: 7-1 Loss

Round 3 v Craig Fountain

My deck set up much nicer in this game and an early Nazareth really hurt Craig's defense. Despite facing 2 copies of Water Jar, neither of them hurt me too badly. Craig had no answer for my defense and played Son of God for his only rescue. His Sites stalled me for a couple turns but then I drew access and overwhelmed his defense.

Final score: 7-1 Win

Round 4 v Jacob Fountain

This game went my way in every way conceivable. My deck drew almost as if I got to choose which order the cards came out... I ended up discarding his Son of God off the top of his deck with the Deck Discard LS and then later my Revealer picked off his Angel of the Lord and Burial...like I said, every which way. He drew some big Angels early but I had the right cards to counter them. He stayed aggressive and my defense ended up shutting him down completely.

Final score: 7-0 Win

Round 5 v Martin Miller

This game started out fast, Martin drew a first turn Hur/Gifts and used that right away. I redrew an EC and battle winner and sent Hur back to territory. Next turn he used it again and I ended up keeping SoG and redrawing NJ and used those to stop him. After that I put most of my hand down and he stopped using Hur/Gifts cuz I was going to start drawing more than I was shuffling in. He stalled for a few turns while I waited to draw offense. I drew Nazareth fairly quick, which stopped his Nebby and several other search cards he had. Then the turn came that probably determined the rest of the game. He used Benedictus and activated Hidden Treasures. I concluded ANB was coming and used DoN on Hidden Treasures. After that he used 3 ANBs in FBTN battles, which got him 2 Lost Souls. Then my defense started coming fast and put a big crimp in his territory set-up. My offense got rolling and I ended up shutting him out the rest of the game.

Final score: 7-2 Win

Final record: 4-1 (1 time-out win) +18 Lost Souls.

Needed another turn or two I would have beat Matt.

Needed a better defensive strategy against Disciples and I might have beat Gabe... :P

Ended up in 4th...not getting the extra point in the first round ended up costing me 3rd. I also never got a chance to play either the 2nd or 3rd place finishers... :(

I think will do 6 rounds of type 2-2player next year and limit multi to 2 rounds. Time wise its imposible to fit in 6 rounds of 2player and 3 rounds of multi. Although I would hate to give up the third round of multi. Matt, Craig and Allen's pairing in the third round was the hit of the tournament. Maybe we should do multi on friday night, say 8:00pm start. and do 7 rounds of 2 player on Saturday?

Here's one idea to consider...

We do two rounds of Multi on Friday night. Then we do 6 rounds of T2 2P Saturday morning and afternoon. Then after 2P is done, we play another round or 2 of MP. One drawback would be that not everyone might be able to make it for the first two rounds of MP on Friday. However, they could join on Saturday and just not receive any points for the rounds they missed. The other drawback would be that we would need to collect MP decks on Friday so that they don't get altered before round 3 and 4 on Saturday.

T2 MP Report

Round 1 vs Pat Wester and Caleb Ardohl

This game got off to a pretty standard start. We each drew a bit of offense and a bit of defense and no one jumped out early. Pat was using Red/Brown. Unfortunately for him my Darius' Decree stopped his Soldier's Prayers which stalled his offense considerably. Caleb (who is a younger and less experienced T2 player) was using a multi-brigade offense and defense and often had trouble getting enhancements to match the characters he had. I abused Salome/The New Covenant as I simply attacked every turn without much fear of potential Plots from Pat--he ended up tearing one, but I healed all my Heroes. The game was still close going into the final round with Caleb having 3, Pat 4 and myself having 4. (Pat was the only one who had used SoG/NJ.) I had SoG in hand but no NJ. I rescued #5 on my turn. Caleb was stopped and then came Pat's final turn. Before he attacked, I played Burial on Caleb's LS leaving only the 2 Liner in Caleb's territory. This play forced Pat to attack me, which is exactly what I wanted. He attacked and I blocked with an EC equipped with Horses (I actually drew 6 cards total during the battle) and drew my New Jerusalem in those 6, allowing me to get to 7.

1st: 7-4-3

Round 2 vs Andrew Wester, Tim Drown and Jordan Alstad

This was a great game on all sides. Andrew drew an early Gifts of the Magi/Generous Widow and it appeared he was going to draw his entire deck before the game was done. Despite all the drawing however, he had no Redeemed LS to show for his efforts. My offense started very slow and only a TSA attack against Jordan's Pharisee defense ended up working. Jordan had the early lead with his Bulletproof Samson going unopposed for several rescues. My Darius' Decree had slowed him a bit, but I decided to turn up Lampstand instead and he got off Birth Foretold. Unfortunately, he used Captured Ark and Lampstand went away. A turn or two later I drew Nazareth. This ended up being huge as I re-activated Darius' Decree and stopped TC enhancements, searching and protected myself from a Mayhem and a Captured Ark. I then drew my Philip, rescued with him and put Nazareth into battle as well letting me search for Bartholomew and those guys started my offense rolling. I ended up getting 3 "freebies" against Tim who couldn't stop the big numbers+protection from capture. However, Jordan then used Stalks of Flax to steal my band... :'( He attacked me with it and when I blocked low for initiative, he used Grapes to shuffle my band into deck. *grumble grumble* Everyone was getting close to winning (I had 4 w/ NJ in hand, Jordan had 5, no SoG/NJ, Tim had 4, no SoG/NJ and Andrew had 5 or 6 using his SoG to stop Jordan from getting 6) when I drew on my turn and my 3rd card was SoG! I rescued against Tim with Susanna and a He is Risen in hand. He had no way to block me and I played SoG/NJ to win. The craziest thing about this game was that I drew very little defense early in the game yet I was never attacked for some reason. Jordan kept using Urim and Thummin to look at Tim and Andrew's hands but never looked at mine (which would have let him know I had virtually no defense that matched). Later in the game I was finally attacked but my defense was ready by that time and I made several blocks. I have also never been such a fan of Nazareth as I was in that game...so awesome.

1st: 7-6-5-4 (I think)

Round 3 vs Nathan Voigt, Andrew Wester and Jayden Alstad

Because I was the only one to win before timing out in Round 1, I knew I just needed an outright 2nd place to win the tournament. With that in mind, I played pretty patient not wanting to attract dominants against me. My draw was not that great as I could not draw a Nazareth, Mary Mother of James or a TGT despite having 2 of each in my deck. Andrew once again drew an early Gifts/Generous Widow and was drawing like crazy early on. One key play early in the game was when Jayden attacked for one of Andrew's 2 LS. The other LS was the female only and I was the only opponent with a female Hero at the time (Susanna). When Andrew blocked low for initiative I had a feeling he was going to use a Plot and take out Susanna so I used Angel of the Lord in Jayden's rescue, which gave Jayden a LS but saved my Suzy. Although Andrew stalled me on my next turn, two turns later, Suzy walked in for that Female LS for free. One epic battle involved me and Andrew. He made a rescue with Generous Widow w/ Gifts up so he drew 6 extra cards. I blocked with an EC w/ Horses and drew 2 and Andrew drew 2 more. Then I played a banding card and banded in Jayden's Sabbath Breaker allowing me to draw 3 more, but Andrew was already at hand limit! Out of nowhere Nathan drops Mayhem... :'( ...why oh why had I not drawn Nazareth yet? However, all was not lost as Andrew played Meeting the Messiah so I drew 2 and he drew 2. Then I played another evil enhancement allowing me to draw 2 more, so I still ended up with a decent size hand. Everyone stayed pretty even though eventually Nathan was able to get 2 Search's played which definitely put him in the driver's seat since he had already played Guardian. A turn or two after Nathan had used his Search's he used SoG/NJ to get the win but I had managed to keep ahead up until that point so I ended up in 2nd and earned the win for the tournament.

2nd: 7-5-4-4 (I think)
