Hmmm.... the rules say that there has to be a non-playing judge. Are we just tossing that rule because we trust each other? Does Rob give his stamp of approval on this policy? I would certainly love to play in my own tournaments.

Officially the Tournament Guide States that the judge/host is permitted to play in a category he is not judging provided it does not interfer with his duties judging the other categories.  That said, I don't enforce this on local play groups if the players want their host to play with them and believe that the host/judge will rule fairly for everyone. 

Last year I hosted the NC State Tournament here in Hayesville.  Clift Crysel, Eric Largent, Tyler Stevens, the Kamke family and a few others joined the Andersons for the tournament.  I was planning to judge and not play.  Those who traveled here asked that I play too.  I joined in and we had a great time.  I can't recall any problems.  I can't see it making sense in a big multi-category event.  There is just too much to do as host.  But, for events of 20 players or less, it's okay with me if it's okay with the players there.

I hosted MW regionals for the first time this year and While there were times I had a non playing judge secured for rulings, during a few rounds I often had people in other categories make rulings for the category I was playing in and vice versa.  I think the key for a large event is to have several people who are capable of scoring rounds (I use the score cards) and make sure those scores are logged as soon as people are done playing.

I will admit this event was the most stressful for me and on a few occasions I had to raise my voice above the crowd to get peoples attention so that we could proceed on time.  But it is not impossible if you have several trusted and informed hosts.  My regional was blessed with Many such people from Jonathan Greeson, Mark Underwood, Gabe Isbell, Travis Brown, Rob Mulye, Alex Olijar and Ron Sias, all of which have hosted before and were very helpful in securing the information if I was unavailable due to still being involved in a match.

I think was Rob is saying is that hosting a tournament that you arent playing in can get boring. I know I enjoy hosting tournaments even when I dont play in them, but I like it even better when I get to play.

True, and I agree with that.  There have been tournaments I have hosted that I have not played in.  I am just saying it is better when you can.

Obviously this is all discretionary.  I would not necessarily play against my newer players, but it is nice to know I have the option, especially when more experienced players can make it to my tournaments. For instance, since I moved to Florida, I have had visits from Captain Kirk (and his family), Professor Underwood, and BubbleBoy. I am glad that I can put aside any reservations I may have previously had and enjoy playing against these fine gentlemen, rather than just watch them play everyone else.

If you consider it a "waste of money" to host a tournament that you cannot play in then perhaps you shouldn't be hosting a tournament to begin with.

Tim I think you misunderstood me.

I was saying it would be a waste of money because you need three people to play an event, so you can hand out all prizes.  I have not had three people come to any of my tournaments, if you don't include either my wife or myself.  For example Soul Seeker came last weekend and was our only other player for one of the days. If we could not play then He would have wasted a trip.

One must also take in account the money that I lose on a tournament. One of us needs to play to even win back some of what we payed into hosting.  With opening packs at my last local I think I either broke even or lost a few buck.  But It was a lot of fun to get to play SS eventhough he beat us both!

I remember bringing a couple guys with me to a tourney at you house in Lexington, and your place in Nicholasville.  I also remember there being a lot of people at KY State last year

Prof is correct, I should have specified, since in New York I havent had more than two other people.
