Thinking about becoming a host...
« on: August 22, 2010, 04:22:16 PM »

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I really should have started over the summer, but since there were so few Redemption tournaments last season, and it appears there will be just as few this time around, I am seriously starting to consider hosting Redemption tournaments at my church.

I have never hosted a tournament before, so I have no idea where to start. In fact, the main reason I was too lazy to host any this summer is because I didn't want to have to read through a bunch of documents to try to find out what to do. :P So basically, I would really appreciate a summary from some of the more experienced tournament hosts as to what to do and how to qualify for an official tournament.

To qualify, I think you just have to be an experience player (judged by years of playing and not by skill (thank goodness :p)).

As to the actual hosting, there's not much to it.  a couple of weeks after you send in your app, they send you a package with the prizes, hosting instruction packet (which if you have been to a few tournaments yourself, you will know most of it), sign in sheet, winner sheet, and the posters to put up.  The things you have to plan out is the cost to play for everyone and what style you will play (besides Swiss style that most people use, there's also elimination, round robin, etc).  During the tournament itself, the main things you have to do is be a scorekeeper and determine who plays against who in each round.  After the tournament, you will need to send back the sign in sheet, the winner sheet, and all unused promos/packs in the pre-postage envelope they provide.

Of course, it also depends on how many people you are expecting.  The bigger the group, the more organized you have to be.

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much. This was exactly what I was looking for. :) With six years of play under my belt, a local-winning title or two, and a good sense of organization, I think I qualify for at least a local host. The only problem I really have is a severe lack of resources (as in, no starter decks, etc., and no money to buy them). I might need to get someone else to provide those things. I guess I'll look over the tournament host application as my first step...

Don't worry about having any starter decks, etc.  For your first tournament, you should probably just hold a local T1-2p tournament.  That way you don't have to have any product at all, and you just let everyone play with their own decks.

If you host I'm going to drive up there so I can forfeit games, give away set amounts of lost souls, convince others to do it, etc to create confusing scenarios for you to sort through.

You could also talk to Bill or Matt. They often have product on hand that they might be able to let you use and then you would just pay them after you collect the sealed deck fees, etc. Also, where exactly is your church located? I have never hosted a tournament before either, but I've helped Bill, Justin, and Matt host enough of them so I know most of the details, and depending on the weekend, I would be more than happy to help you out.

I've also considered starting to host tournaments, but I have just never felt comfortable planning a weekend that far ahead when my life is already so busy. But like I said, I'd be more than happy to help out if I'm available that weekend.

My church is Eagan Hills Alliance Church, found on this map.

It would be great if I could get someone who knows what they're doing to just come along and guide me if any complications arise. I'd be willing to work around your schedule to find a date that works.

Okay, I have a new question: On the tourney host application, when it asks which promo you want for your tournament, are you able to select more than one? I've seen people offer many different promos before.

That's about a half hour drive from my place, so that is no problem. I would be more than happy to help host/judge etc. Let me know the time frame you are looking at, and I'll give you some weekends that will likely work. My wife works every other Saturday, so the best days would probably be one of those weekends, since we'll probably want to be together on the weekends she doesn't work. The first thing is to talk to the people in charge at your church to see when a room there would be available, and if there is any charge to rent it. Then you can go from there as far as the applications go, etc. Depending on when it is and if he doesn't work, I could also see if I could convince Justin to go as well. He works at Target Field when the Twins are away, just to let you know when he might be available.

As to the Promo question for locals, you select one. The guys that offer more than one I'm fairly certain have stockpiles from several times hosting. But I am not completely sure. Although, if you schedule it in late September/October, you might be able to get the new local Promo (Pithom, which is awesome), which would definitely attract more of the high level players, and you'd have plenty of help hosting your first tourney. I'm not sure when that will officially be available for release though.

Would October 10th work for you? That's like the earliest I could possibly do it, and if it doesn't work then, I'll probably have to wait until November.

October 10th is a Sunday...is that intentional? If you meant October 9th, then I would have to get back to you: it is not one of my wife's work weekends, but she might be able to switch if that would be the only weekend you can do it. If you really do mean the 10th, that would make things difficult for people with church, and I don't think I could commit to that, as I am usually involved with my church on Sundays until at least noon. I would guess your church is busy on Sundays too... ;)

Yes, I meant the ninth. There is apparently an error on this page. :P

Although I still need to check with my church and stuff, and I'm not even sure who to talk to. I don't see an "event coordinator" or anything on the contact list, so I'll need to look into that.

Not really an error. Those dates are 2009-2010. See the one that says: Saturday, Jan 2nd, 2010?

Ah...haha...hahaha...yeah...:P

Well, I think I am going to wait until the new promo is available on the application sheet before I sign up. So I'll wait to set a date until then, seeing as I have to plan six weeks ahaid anyway.

if it's in years of playing then could i technically host or is there an age limit?

There is an age limit (believe its 15-17 can host with an adult present and 18 and up can host by themselves)

As it turns out, there is a family reunion on October 9th on my wife's side of the family. But definitely let me know when you're thinking of hosting, and I'll do what I can to help out.

Well, I'm going to wait at least until Pithom is available on the application, and I will have to plan at least 6 weeks ahead of that, so the actual tournament won't be for a while. Also, I still am not sure how busy I'm going to be this year, although I expect to be very...very busy, so I'm still putting some thought into this.

Nope. I hosted one when I was 11. ( I was playing for 5 years and had won 2 tourneys. )
However, both Bill and my parents were there the whole time.

do you ever read the dates on outdated threads? i mean how far back do you search the pages in order to find something that you can post on to get your opinion on every thread?
