An idea for people who can't go to nationals

I was thinking that maybe we should have a for fun game day of redemption during the national tourney. There would be no prizes, no glory, and no offical winner it would just be a large group of people playing online.

Here is how it would work. The days that the national redemption tournament was in session several hamachi sites would be put up maybe named as "Fun room nats 1,2,3" and so on. and whoever wasn't at nationals or is for that matter can play online with a bunch of people joined online.

Thanks,
KingLeo

I've never seen this, but from what I've heard, in years gone by, there was an online tournament run specifically for those who couldn't attend Nats. It hasn't happened in the last couple years because everyone with the will to go has been able.

Well, that's not true. Finances and time commitments have stopped plenty of people from going to Nationals over the last two years. Your comment seems to fit a single young adult's view, which is not the only population pool for Redemption.

This was done in August 2010.  It was a lot of fun.  I was not a good player back then, and didn't know what I was doing (first time using Hamachi), but it was still fun.

I don't expect to go to Nats this year, so I'd be up to doing this.  Depending on who participates, I'd be willing to track the performances on a spreadsheet and have the matchups run Swiss style, with a time limit for games.  And for fun, I'd even give something good (cards, packs, etc) to the winner.

The problem with this idea is that Nationals is 4 months away, and good ideas that need to wait have a tendency to die off on these boards...

I mispoke. I meant to say that it hasn't happened in the last couple years because anyone with the will to run an online tournament during Nats has gone to Nats, but I phrased it very poorly. My mistake.

I see. Carry on!  ;D

What exactly would be required of the "host" for such an online tournament?

I can't imagine much. Organizational skills mostly, and the time/will to set it up and implement it. I don't even imagine a use of Hamachi/RTS would be necessary to "host" such a tournament.

If the requirements are minimal, then I may be able to host this online tournament during Nats this year.

I would certainly love too! Since I can't go to Nats this year, I'd be game for this!

It would be fun to have the rounds timed as well. The only problem with this is the RTS program as cards like Susanna, Divination, look at bottom cards, are not supported and completely broken.

May I volunteer Mr. Tim H. to host this then?

We promise at Nats to project the sites on the tournament wall for all to view.

And you guys know that the players are planning to stream the tournament and highlight the last game, blow-by-blow, with streaming cameras that would enable the two players' moves and cards to be seen.

Let's all pray for a successful family affair at Nats, physically or online.

Great job rehashing this idea,  Chris E. from MO.

Peace and blessings, all!

Whoa there, big fella!  :o

I think if someone who has already run the online tournaments is available, then they would be a better choice, since I have no idea what it entails. I was offering the possibility, so that the idea would not die before it even got started.

It's really easy.  Prof U organized it back in August 2010, and there were about 8 players.  He made a Hamachi group for us to join (now it would need to be more, since you can only have 5 per group), and we used the group chat function to report scores, ask ruling questions, etc.  He made the first round games random, and games had 45 minutes (I think) to run.  Once the 45 minutes were up, or earlier if everyone finished their games, he'd assign the next round of games based on Swiss scoring.  I think we played 5 rounds.

I haven't run ROOT before, but I volunteered to lead this idea because the above (I think) is all that would need done.

This is a great idea.  I remember running this back in 2010, and it was a lot of fun.  I think Kurt Hake ended up winning it.  If I don't end up being able to go to Nats this summer, then I'd participate or even help run this, and we could even make it officially count for ROOT RNRS points.

I'd also totally support jmhartz/YMT running the show if they like.  I'm sure they'd do a great job as well.

Haha well, I'm glad that a lot of people liked my idea! I look forward to joining the group when you get it set up. I would offer help but I have school and play practice and b-ball.

Thanks,
