Tournament Application updated 2019
« on: February 08, 2019, 10:48:42 AM »

I have updated the Host Application to include the new Storehouse seasonal promo card.  I ordered these from the printer this week and hope to receive them first week of March.

Take special note that a number of the old local and district promo cards are no longer available.  These have run out.  The old State, Regional and National promo cards are also no longer available.

The host application (updated 2/6) list those promo cards currently available for for local and district tournaments as well as the cards available for tournament winners.  Harvest Time is no longer available.

In terms of state and regional events, my plan is to provide the current year's new promo card for each event AND the promo card from the previous year so that players in state and regional events get one more opportunity to get it. I.E. if you participate in a state tournament this year, you will received the new State promo card and last season's state promo card.  The Nationals tournament promo will be just for that season.

Thoughts?

I think we will be fine.  There might be a handful of the newer promos that people would like more of but most already have multiples of the older ones.  I've always thought it was very generous to get 10 cards for entering a tournament (even if I had most of them already).  So from a collector's/trader's standpoint what are the promos that will be given out this year?

I'm assuming we will have a new State and Regional Promos, but are "last year's" the reprint of Laban & Goliath, or the Job & Fearless Traveler from 2017?

Personally, I think it is good for Nationals to rotate on an annual basis, but attendees get one for each event they play. To me, this makes those promos a little more of a chase card and therefore more valuable on the market. It also allows for some promotional opportunities like supporting the Land of Redemption posts and incentivizing participation.

I also like receiving multiple years of promos for States/Regionals. You still need to attend to receive them but if you miss one year, it is not quite as impactful. I don’t know how long new promos will be created, but if it will be continual, something like this year’s promo plus pick one from a prior year could be good for the game.

i.e. This year you get the new State promo plus pick between Laban and Fearless Traveler (if I recall correctly that those were the State promos).

It could also be a possibility to get this year’s plus pick two since we already have two year’s worth at this point.

I think something like this would support the players/collections, but not flood the market (which invents tournament attendance)

I'll break my lurking for this post :P

You may or may not have been around when AOCP came out but for years that card was a staple and was one of the most expensive cards in the game. Type 2 was a rich man's game when 5 AOCPs were in nearly every deck and the card was $40+.

Throttling the number of hard to get promos just drives the prices up on the secondary market to unreasonable levels. Other games can get away with this since promos are just "chase" cards, and rarely are any good, or are just pure cosmetic reprints. Redemption is unique in the sense that promo cards are such a key part to current decks.

Think of it like this... say each player on average plays in 3 categories. 70ish people show up. So there are a little over 200 promos in circulation plus however many are given out as promotions afterward. That's a ridiculously small amount. That's enough for 50 type 2 players to have 4 copies of a single card... If a Nats promo hits it big then we have another The Second Coming problem on our hands. Not a good thing in my opinion.

On the other hand, I think the limited availability for Nats winners promos is a good thing. I, of course, wish there were more in circulation but that's what a chase card should be. A deck staple should not be a "chase card". When you get into MTG and the prices for other card games that's a whole other hornets' nest but Redemption has a tradition of not letting a card stay unreasonably expensive for too long.

I personally think reprints of Nats promos should be a thing. Maybe not at the level of handing out every past promo but maybe something similar to what is being suggested with the State and Regional promos.

You make some fair points which is why we've been intentional with making National promos (or really any promos for that matter) not cards that a T2 player will need 4 of. Many are actually one per deck cards like Glory of the Lord (2014, 2015) and Whirlwind/Everlasting Ground (2018).

Also, I wish we could get 50 T2 players... :P

I'm open to printing the current year's National Promo card plus the previous year's like state and regional.  The chase card part of it would be that the date and location on the reprinted card would change.  Another issue is that in some cases the host has commissioned the card image with his own resources for his event.  I need to be mindful of that.

It’d be nice if there were 50 players that show up to a National tourney for T1!

I would expect Nationals attendance to be larger this year with a more central location. I'm really glad Roy and Travis had the opportunity to host in Texas, but I do think the distance made it not a viable option for some people so the attendance was down. Hopefully we can get back over 100 in Tennessee!  8)
