just think if you won at the worlds tourney you could legitimately say you were "World Champion, Best in the World, The most dominating player in the World."  Ya I could have fun with that.

CA for Nats '09. (please please please I really want to go to a Nats before I get old :) )
there are many more others who want to go before they get old too... like BubbleBoy. the majority is closer to Iowa, and we had just as big a regionals as the CA people did.

2007 - MO
2006 - NY
2005 - MN
2004 - LA
2003 - PA
2002 - MN
2001 - PA
2000 - MO
1999 - OH

Although he couldn't make it, he's had a couple shots at it being within a hour or so of him.  Couldn't we Cali's have a shot at it being within a couple hours of us?

I'm sorry; I didn't want my post to make a big difference in your decisions or anything; I just feel depressed that I haven't been able to make any of the nationals so far, even the ones in MN (I didn't start until after 2002, and as I said before, I had to go to a funeral during 2005 Nationals. :() But evn if that mattered, I'm just one person.

CA is much further away then IA for the people on the east coast. I will say it again, you're asking more people to do exactly what you would do.

Also, what would nationals be if Roy, Reggie, Claude, and Christian couldn't come?

If you put Nats in CA you automatically alienate 2/3 of the Redemption community Iowa on the other hand is manageable distance to travel from both coasts

Iowa is questionably reasonable driving distance for me, and I'm in KY (only halfway to the coast from Iowa).  It is definitely not reasonable driving distance for someone living anywhere on the East or West coasts.  That means someone living there would probably have to fly to get there.  And as long as people are flying, then it really doesn't matter where Nats is, because flight times won't be significantly different.

Basically, no one out west has been able to come to Nats without flying EVER.  It is their turn to get to have Nats withing reasonable driving distance for all of them that don't have the money to fly.

Not that I'm speaking for all west coast people but I think what I have to say can be agreed with by most West coasters.

First we do know a Nats out here would make it difficult for people to attend from the East side.  We just want people to realize every year is hard for us to attend and we do just want one that is easier to make.  It probably wont be the biggest Nats ever but the boost we could get from hosting a Nats could be significant.  Plus it might push some of us to attend more Nats around the nation.

Second getting a Nats WILL help our play groups grow.  Just the possibility of having Nats in CA has brought me back into the game. (I had quit and sold all my cards).  Plus I've had my play group go from 2 to nearly 20 in the past month becuase of the excitement I feel.  I know I can't take all 20 to Nats with me if its in CA but there are a couple of them that are interested.  More players out here helps all of us around the nation.  It keeps the game going and makes things fun with new players.

Third there are some good players out here too who want to have a chance to play in the BIG tourney.  The last few years Nats has only had Ben Arp represent us NW players.  Ben is our best and has represented us well but I know I as well as a few others would like the chance to atleast compete at a nats.

Fourth apart of Nats is giving players the chance to experience different locations and different environments.  Players have the ability to visit some of the different things near where the tourney is located.  Like in MN I know people had talked about going to a Twins baseball game and the Mall of America.  In CA people could go to like Angels or Dodgers game, Disneyland as well as other things. I know that every location has something different for people to see and do so having a Nats in CA gives a new oppurutnity to experience life around the u.s.a.

On a side note I dont' think other locations are better or worse then CA I'm just saying us west coasters have dreamed about this for years.

so basically, you want the west coast to have their own little nats party, plus a few people who found enough money to afford it?

::)

Um, no. Prof's point was that flying to Iowa would cost him just about as much as flying to California, since Iowa is too far for him to drive. I'm confused as to how you could have missed that, especially since Prof doesn't even live on the west coast (and said as much) and so doesn't really have a vested personal interest in having it there.

Also, as far as I know, there's never been a National tournament in the entire western half of the United States. Two of the last four National tournaments have been within a state of you, and one was in your home state itself; are you really going to begrudge hundreds of people in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and California one year out of fifteen just so you can have Nationals closer to you, again?

Given the economic times, Why not make the regional tourney's a little more interesting? Charge more per Regional participant with the awards being that the Regional 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners having their commuting expenses paid for by the Regional entry fees to a NATS tourney, with at large invitations to the Regional RNRS point leaders (no expenses paid) and invitations to local 1st place winners (no expenses paid) to participate if they can afford it.

Wow now that would be a NATS tourney. ;D

Now that we're a family, I can be the ulll-timate DAD.

That would be interesting and not a bad idea.

I am also in favor for Natz in Cali (for more than abvious reasons that  live in Cali).

My story is somewhat like NWJosh.  I had a few friends who played together but we all drifted apart (usually happens when we all are active in our own church).  I did start a playgroup at my church that met once a month, but the people who came usually had other things to do that day.  I work all day so I can't try to start one at a school and I've become busy with buying a house and getting ready to go back to school to become a Math teacher (got tired of sitting behind a desk for eight hours a day).  I have basically had no money to get more cards and have no time to play online.  However, once I heard that Natz might come to Cali, I also got more interested in playing again.

I'm hoping that it does come to Cali.  Since there seems like a good chance that it might, I will try really hard to come to the State and Regional this next summer (considering that it's basically a seven to eight hour drive round trip for me).

God Bless

Whenever there is a Nats in CA Cactus should announce it 2 years before-hand for a number of reasons 1. To give the WC playgroups time to expand 2. To allow for arrangements to be made and 3. To allow all of the other players to start saving   their money to pay the high prices

[YMT's most excellent little rant mostly deleted--mjb]
What happened to the whole "first shall be last" Christian attitude? Why can't we put others' interest before our own? Based on the list of prior Natz, it appears that is exactly what the west coasters have been doing for almost ten years.

Although I would tend to agree with most of the sentiments YMT has expressed, I would point out that the desire to have the largest number of players possible attend Nationals is not a selfish interest. I would prefer it is some way could be to maximize the turnout even given a West Coast location.

Maybe announcing a West Coast Nats for 2010 (barring unforeseen circumstances) at the same time as the 2009 Nats announcement would be a good thing. It would give everyone on this side of the Atlantic continental divide an extra year to arrange vacation schedules or save up a bit extra for flying out. It would also give the West Coast play groups a two year bump for recruitment. Lastly, it would allow the negative nellies a chance to adjust their attitudes a bit.

I'm just spitballin' here.  As I see I was instaposted, I wish JSB23 would let me post my own ideas.

I've become busy with buying a house and getting ready to go back to school to become a Math teacher

What?  Another math teacher?  Yikes, I sure hope Cactus is getting some kind of kickback for all the math teachers there are playing Redemption...
