i would LOVE to come but valentine's weekend is a bad one for me.  I have a Purity Promise on the 13th, and time with my wife on the 14th before an upcoming busy week.  Thanks for the update though...I will continue to watch for more.  I'm hoping to host a tourney sometime in late march or early april once I know when Spring Fling is.

All our prayers for your tourney from the Long Island group, Rob!!!  Hugs to Mrs. Mulye for us, okay?  God bless NY for the back-to-back tourneys in one day.  My dream is that one day there will be 5 simultaneous NY tourneys in a day that covers all players form various parts of the State.

Godbless!!!

thanks! That would be cool if there were 5 at once.

God Bless

are there even 5 hosts?  if we all host the same day then we may hurt each other's tournaments.   ;)

Like I said earlier, Rob, I would love to come, but 2 youth events and a date with my wife prevents it.  I'm a little bummed but hopefully next time.

I'm hoping to have a tournament around late March/Early April so keep your eyes peeled.

Next time we will plan things out a little more in advance.

I must say I can't wait to play in another tournament.  New York we need to plan out some events. I know Jonathan is hoping to host in the next month or two.  I would like to host another local or district in the next couple of months as well.

Any ideas for which weekends?
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: robm on March 05, 2010, 08:42:24 PM
hey all,

I would like to host another local or a district in april or may.  Any thoughts on when a good date would be for people?

I was thinking about Friday april 30th and saturday may 1st?

If so, events would include sealed deck, t1-2 player, t2-2player, and t-1 multiplayer, and maybe teams

Hey NY,

Just wanted to update everyone on a possible district either the first or second weekend in May.  If you are interested let me know so I can put in for it.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: soul seeker on March 25, 2010, 04:48:39 PM
Hey Rob,
My suggestion is the first weekend to be sure not to overlap any state tournaments.  Especially, the one in Pitts.  I will go to a state tourney over a district any day, but I do want to go to your tourney too which is why i suggested it.   ;)
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: robm on March 25, 2010, 06:17:40 PM
Ok let me check with my wife and I will try to send in for it the first weekend in May, unless your going to attend CT states with I think is that weekend.

*Edit*  The first weekend in May is only 5 weeks away now, so I think I will have to go with the second weekend May 7 and 8.  Then you can still make it to PA states the weekend after that.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: soul seeker on March 25, 2010, 08:33:26 PM
ok, I didn't realize the 7/8th was the second weekend.  As long as Marc doesn't put NY states on that date then you are right...we are good to go!
I'll spread the word at my local this Good Friday about your tourney.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: robm on March 25, 2010, 08:48:11 PM
I thought Mark was leaning toward the 11/12 of June for states?  If he does make it may 7/8 then I would need to postpone my tournament

*edit* I still have to confirm with my wife if this is a good date for the tournament.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: robm on March 28, 2010, 05:47:57 PM
It is a negative on the may district as I have made plans to attend CT states and PA states, as well as hopefully regional.  With a new baby I can't take that weekend away from our time as a family.

However I will try to put in a district for june or july after NY states has been make official.

Sorry.

Hey,
I've ran into a snag for Saturday.  The Trustees just assigned a church work day then (8 to noon) and the youth are to paint some benches.  I need to see if I can get another adult leader to cover me.  If not, then I'm going to struggle to make it to your tourney.  I'll keep you informed.  With you being just outside of Rochester, I should be able to bring some of my crew.  The problem is going to be this newly formed church work day.  I'll see what I can do.
On the outside chance I can't get out of the workday.  Would you mind swapping a category with the Friday night one?  If not, then I understand. Also, out of curiosity, which district promo is it?

Sorry for the newly formed headache, but this was decided at last night's trustees meeting (of which i have no say.)   :-[
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: robm on June 02, 2010, 04:44:42 PM
hey jonathan,

The Promo is Self.

Which events would you want switched?  Would you just come to that one on friday in that case, if you cannot get out of the work day?

We could also probably send your favorite event to phase 3 on saturday if you can only make it for one.

The biggest complication is our 5 month old, and laine or I either sitting out of an event and judging or playing round robin with possible pauses if there is an odd number.  My hope is to get to t1 multi around the time she needs a nap but I will sit out of everything but that event if needed.

Also my friend Dan, will not have played t2 yet so if he wanted to leave early on sat I put that one last.

Anyhow, just let me know what would be best for you.

Al or anyone else going to make it?

Rob,
Sorry, I won't be able to make either day as I have been scheduled to work Saturday and
Sunday that weekend.    Just a thought!    What if you postponed one week and maybe myself and Jonathan can make it then.

Sorry. Wish i could but I can't because then my friend won't be able to make it, he is going to be out of town that following weekend. Sorry!  Hope you guys can make it the next time we have one.

In Christ,

Hey Rob,
I can't get out of it...I would ask that you switched sealed and Type 1 2 player.
Also, I ask to leave Type 2 2 player at it's original time.

My preference is that I drive up Friday afternoon (I'm assuming 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on what side of Rochester you're on--i need to input your address into my GPS) and play Type 1 2 player.
I drive home late that evening.
I lead the youth in painting the pavilion at the church workday (8 to noon)
I leave around 12:30 (giving myself 2 hours again) to show up on time for the 2:30 PM Type 2, 2 player tourney.

Ideally, that is my hope, but do what's best for your baby.  I can play t1 Multi...I'm just not a fan of it.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: robm on June 05, 2010, 09:13:12 AM
That should be fine with us. We can Start t2 2 player round robin style to give you more time to get there and so Laine and I have a chance to sit out rounds to take care of our baby.

Friday night may be a little crazy just to forwarn you, cuz naomi will need to go to bed in the middle of the tourney.  We will try to plan accordingly, if need be laine and I could delay our match up, or play it ahead of time.

it shouldn't be a problem:  my durango holds 7
me, wife, baby girl, aaron, his gf, and you makes 6...car topper for luggage.

As for your tourney, it will be just me Friday night.  Aaron has to work, and the rest of my playgroup is going to another church's youth event; and Saturday they are watching Toy Story 3 after we paint benches.

Cool. Will we be staying for all the events at midwest regionals?

As for my tourney, your just coming tommorrow then?  My number is 315-345-3370 if you need any directions.  Our apartment is the first floor of a blue house. Entrance is in front, come in the front door and apartment A is on the right.

Saturday is a bit up in the air but i hope to make it because I could use the district points in T2 and I can't get them if I don't attempt for them.  I should know for sure when I"m there Friday.

Thanks for the number, I"m pretty confident in my GPS, but it's always nice to have a backup plan as you know.  There's plenty of parking right?  I will talk with you tomorrow about midwest regionals...we may not stay for the last category because of the 7 hour trip and church the next day.

Rochester NY 2011 Tournament Season

Hey all my fellow New Yorkers, especially those upstate!

Thus begins the time to think about having tournaments so we can have some fun fellowship, get those new promos, and test out our new strategies!
I would also like to welcome somekittens into the area for this season!  So this is were you guys come in and give your input on what weekends will work best for you guys to have/attend tournaments, and I would love to see Redemption spread into Robert Wesleyan college.

Rochester Tournament Schedule 2010-2011

September-  ??? Something may or may not happen, depends on our schedule at home.

October-  I am think about a local tournament for the weekend of the 15/16.  If any of you know this is good for you now I will try to send in for an official, if not it may become an impromtu tourney.  Also I know Soulseeker was considering hosting in october so I dont want to get in the way of that if you wanted that weekend, so just let me know.

November- I would like to have at least a district tournament in november, the only weekend I can't right now is the first one.   If it works out I would like to have a local as well or go to one somewhere (Roberts?)

December-  may or may not do any redemption this month, due to the weather traveling to tournaments may not work out for some.

Well any ways these are my thoughts. Let me know what you guys are thinking.

God Bless!
RobM

Oh and I do have disciples pack that I may be willing to trade or sell when people come to my tournies.

Oct 16 th  would be perfect for a Local !     Somekittens and I are corresponding and I could pick him up on the way to your house on that Saturday.

Sounds great!  I will send in for a local event for Oct 15 and 16th.  The events will be t1-2 player, t2-2player, t1-multiplayer, and sealed deck.  We could do other ones such as teams or booster (which I cannot supply). Just let me know what you guys think.  Since sealed isn't not usually popular outside our group i would probably run that on friday night and the rest of the events on saturday, like usual.

Would would you guys prefer booster packs or redemption cash?

If someone could get back to me tonight before I seal the application that would be great!

Hey Rob,
Barring any emergencies, I should be there on Saturday, Oct. 16th.  (I think my classes end the day before.)

Also, I'm checking with the youth tonight about having a tournament Thanksgiving weekend.  Do you guys think you will be free that weekend...I know it's a pretty big shopping weekend.  Let me know because that is what I'm leaning towards.  (Maybe the first weekend in December is an option too.)

we look forward to seeing you on the 16th.

Either weekend should be fine, go with what is best for your youth and I will try to come.

Oh why is our State that big.......to difficult to hold a tourney in one spot......

Anyway, it will be a fun-filled weekend for New York State!!!

Godbless!
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments- Oct 15/16 Local
Post by: robm on October 09, 2010, 03:58:54 PM
Oct 15/16 Local Schedule

Friday Night: Sealed Deck

Saturday
Phase 1: t1-2player

Lunch

Phase 2: t1-Multiplayer

Phase 3: t2-2player

Hey all just hoping I could get a final head count for saturday so I can decide whether to play round robin or swiss. Anticipating 6 or 7 players I am leaning toward swiss and playing 3 rounds for the two player events and 2 rounds for multiplayer.  Again, just let me know if you can make it and if anyone else is coming with you.

I'll be there, but I won't promise to be any good...most likely I will be building all my decks the night before.  I'm heading up to just have some fun between sets of classes. It's been a looooonnnnggggg eight weeks.  It is highly likely that I will be all alone.  The one person who could possibly go told me this past Wednesday that they got scheduled to work.  I'm sorry I'm not helping with numbers at any of your tournaments.   :-[

Sounds good guys looks like we will have at least 6!  Eight if I can get the two guys in my area both here!  So regardless it will be my biggest New York tournament Yet! We will play round robin with this turnout then. I might have to breakout my other table!

Remember $10 will cover all open events and lunch should be provided along with some chips and pretzel for snacks.

Looking forward to see you all for some fun redemption!

Jonathan, maybe I'll have a chance at beating you then since I've had my decks together since a few weeks after nationals.  ;)

Its exciting to know that Redemption will be played throughout the state this weekend!

Hey all!  Looks like we will be cram packed!  Sounds like the total will be 8 or 9 now.

Yes we will be starting at 10am with t1-2player. Make sure you guys have your decks ready to check so we can get a quick start.

Rounds amounts should be the same even with the amount of players, we might go to four for t1 2 player.

Looks like I will have a lot of cleaning a rearranging to do for saturday!

God Bless and looking forward to seeing you all.  I'm glad I anticipated enough promos for everyone!  It will be the new local promo. Texp for the winners.

Hey Rob,
I have already forgotten which promo we agreed that I would sign up for.  Wasn't it Capture Ark?  You were signing up for Chaldeans right?  Let me know.  For the college guys benefit, I am going to sign up for Saturday, December 4th.

Yep. Your Right.  You Capture Ark.  Me Chaldeans.

Any input on when you guys want to have another district for this promo?

Post by: soul seeker on November 23, 2010, 12:00:46 PM
Well, this is not exactly in Rochester, but it is pretty close.
The tournament on Saturday Dec 4th will follow the tentative schedule.  (# of players will naturally adjust it some.)

9-9:30 AM players arrive, check-in decks, socialize, and get settled.
9:45 AM    pairings start for T1 2 Player

10 AM       T1 2 Player officially begins   (4 rounds of 45 minutes are likely)

12:30ish     Lunch  will be between rounds around this time.

2 PM        Booster Draft is set to begin                     Type 2 2-Player is the alternative

5 PM        T1 Multi is set to begin                           Type 2 Multi is the alternative

$25 covers Open categories, Booster Draft, Lunch, and pop
   * I will give discounts to those who do not want their Captured Arks.  :)

I hope to see a lot of you on the 4th!

Yes, the entry fee will be less if they choose not to play booster and play T2 instead.

For all that are traveling to my tourney...
Avoid going through Portville (which means don't take the Olean exits from I-86), it is in a state of emergency with a flooding river.
The Friendship exit is your friend!  (I'm pretty sure it is exit 29 from I-86)
Hopefully, you guys up North aren't snowed in!  Our roads are clear of snow and water if you approach our place from Friendship. Plus, my church is approximately 10-15 minutes from the Friendship exit.  (Slow down for the speed zones...State Police watch them closely.)

Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: soul seeker on December 02, 2010, 11:11:52 PM
8137 Main St.
Little Genesee, NY 14754

Considering where you guys are coming from...your GPS or chosen map/direction site should send you down I-390 to some connection highway *EDIT: if I'm reading my GPS right State Rd. 36 (it seems like it's Exit 6 off 390 past Danville) to I-86 (which picks up in Hornell) then you will head West (I'm pretty confident) and get to the Friendship Exit.

I've only hosted one official tournament, which was a local.  This being a district, I'm unsure if you'll have to co-host.  Also, I'm doing the Chaldeans promo?

Food shouldn't be a problem, we've got our cafeteria right on campus, and all of us have guest passes that we never use.

We'll be doing T1-2P/MP, T2-2P/MP (Hopefully enough attendance to run them simultaneously) for sure.  Would you rather have Booster Draft or Teams?  A couple of my guys have been itching to do teams.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments

yeah, the Chaldeans promo would be a good one.  I can help co-host if you would like.  Go ahead and do what you guys would prefer (which is TEAMS).  I will try and get a partner and 2 decks set for it once I get a date.

As of now, I've got:
Round 1: T1/2 Multi
Round 2: T1/2 2P
Round 3: Teams

I can switch around any of those.  I'd like to start round 1 at 10:30, so if people could arrive at 10, that'd be great.  (if that's too early, let me know).

What's the story on the T2 categories?  I'm pretty sure you have those too.  I don't have a Teams partner as of now, so I guess my preference would be to match up against that.

EDIT:  Nevermind....I'm an idiot.  I reread your post and there is no such thing as a Type one half.     However, I would prefer if you slid the T2 2P to go against Teams otherwise I have to go hunt for a partner.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments

I was planning on having multi/2P for both T1 and T2 at the same time.  This is totally in a state of flux, so suggestions are welcome.  Will you be bringing any of your group?
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments

1 has told me a definite yes (his girlfriend is out of town).  Two others are a maybe, and I will try to get a confirmation from them tomorrow.  If you keep the current schedule, then I will likely partner up with the "definite" yes.  However, you have made my decision of what categories to play in tougher since I typically don't like multi-player.   :P
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: SomeKittens on February 15, 2011, 04:25:02 PM
I wanted to have an alternative to T2 so that the beginners here won't have a lull.  Unless you could bring ~5 decks for everyone to share, my people will be playing T1.

Since the vast majority of T2 will be coming from outside, I'm kind of at a loss for where to put it.

How about:
T1 2P/T2 Multi
T2 2P/T1 Multi
TEAMS

Or pair a T2 event up with teams?

Probably better than...
Quote
Round 1: T1/2 Multi
Round 2: T1/2 2P
Round 3: Teams

BUT, is it possible to have the T1 2P in the afternoon? If it is ok with everyone else of course, I've got a narrow window--really just interested in T1 2P if I have a choice--about 12:30 to 6:30 because I've got a concert to play in at 7:30. Stinks for me, sorry to be difficult.

Perhaps:
T2 2P/T1 Multi
T1 2P (most people will want to join this?)
Teams/T2 Multi (later in the day where people can either leave or those who want to can stick around?)

David

P.S. where is this being held on RWC campus?
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: SomeKittens on February 15, 2011, 11:16:45 PM
I'll see if I can accommodate that.  We'll be having that at BT's, because no one is there until eight, and they have tables.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: soul seeker on February 15, 2011, 11:57:26 PM
Three things:
One, I don't know what a "BT" is in regards to the campus...by the way, is visitors parking easy to find?

Two, I was suggesting moving one of the Type 2 categories (preferably the one going against T1 2 Player) to coincide with Teams.  Ultimately, I will submit to your schedule because you know what's best with your time commitments and for your playgroup.

Three, I likely can build 5 T2 decks, but they will get worse as I build them (dominant, Lost souls, and battle winning cards-wise) and approx. 2 will be unsleeved.

As long as I know the final schedule a couple days before the event, and I should be good.  Don't stress with my opinion though...I'm just happy to play (and to get a Chaldeans).
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: SomeKittens on February 16, 2011, 10:22:54 AM
I don't think we'll need those T2, as long as we've got a T1 category at the same time.

Visitor parking is plentiful, and I'll get a map up soon.

This seems reasonable:
T2 2P/T1 Multi
T1 2P
Teams/T2 Multi

Big things!
1.) http://www.roberts.edu/campusmap/ (http://www.roberts.edu/campusmap/)  Park either at Upper Rinker Community Parking or Voller Parking, and head toward Voller Athletic Center.  I'll post signs/people from there in to BT's.
2.) Friday night we'll be having a TEAMS Sealed tournament.  If anyone wants to show up for that, let me know, and I'll arrange a place for you to stay.
3.) I may not have enough promos!  My playgroup has grown, which is great, but don't worry, I'll make sure anyone from off-campus gets one before those on campus.
4.) Somehow, Rob missed that we were doing TEAMS at this district, so I don't have Redemption Cash or a TxP card for that category.  I'll provide it out-of-pocket, and try to make that up.

Okay so I am hosting a local, hopefully it will be Saturday, October 8th and will consist of 3 categories, booster draft(with new tins), type 1 2 player, and type 1 multi, it will be the first tournament of my playgroup and I hope you guys can come, I need to know how many I can expect, I'm going to put down that I will be expecting up to 20, I know that is a bit high, but if any of you can make it, that would be awesome, the prizes will be priests packs, and the promo will probably be the panic demon promo. Hope you guys can make it.

Can you remind me when is deck check and the order of events?  Me and my boys are planning on coming.  2 of my playgroup will come if their school doesn't have a track (cross country) meet.  Another one is going to try and ask off work.  So I have 3 for sure with the potential of 3 more.

Just a head count for the 1st, we'll be doing sealed TEAMS, is anyone interested?

@SoulSeeker, I know Booster is first for Luke's, unsure of the other two.

@Luke, so far Bret and I are confirmed.

Post by: Tom Bombadil on September 22, 2011, 10:59:17 PM
Okay, I had had requests to make deck checks early so I planned deck checks at 9:00 A.M, If some people need to come on Friday I am sure we can probably arrange something. I was planning on running each category one at a time since we are only doing three. But if we need to double up we will work something out, but other than that the order is not yet been decided, the price will be $5.00 for general entrance and another $20.00 for booster draft. I hope to see you guys come, and also my group is both excited and nervous to meet you guys and play against you guys, but looking forward to it!

Luke, I will bring a second deck for when I play against your players. The defense of my main deck has been angering some of the people back here and you don't get to use your offense at all against me. I'm looking forward to see how your group is going though.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: katedid on September 23, 2011, 12:22:03 AM
Im not confirming anything but Ill see if i can swing it. It would probably be good considering Im not the best at playing myself. How long are you thinking this will be going?
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: soul seeker on September 23, 2011, 09:45:41 AM
Hey Luke,
The Booster cost is too much for me and my boys to play Booster (and my boys are still a bit young yet to understand Booster).  I would prefer that Booster to be either first or last.  If it is in the middle, then my crew may be sitting around.  Just my 2 cents.

Also, I thought about bringing a fun second deck for your playgroup...however, one typically has to pick a deck prior to knowing their opponent.  I will continue to work on a deck that's not too intimidating.

Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: lp670sv on September 24, 2011, 02:47:52 AM
Luke I might be able to make it but might have to leave early to get back to Roberts (curse you soccer!!) So I would prefer booster draft be last as I don't have the money to swing that category at this time. This would also help SoulSeeker's group so they aren't sitting around doing nothing. I will try to borrow a deck that isn't mine for the tournament since I doubt any of your players would enjoy me coming in with Gardenciples. Randall or Brett if one of you could lend me something, even if just a modified starter, that would be helpful. Don't want to scare the n00bs off. (Though just a heads up SoulSeeker, I WILL be checking my normal deck in as well and if we play at any point I'll be using that one, so bring your A game deck as well  ;) )

1.  If I can get to you, can I hop a ride to the tournament?

2.  If so, where exactly are you (town)?

Please reply soon either way, my deadline for getting the time off would be today (Saturday 9/24, in case it somehow doesn't mention it here.)
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments

I live in Wyoming, NY which is about 45 minutes east of Buffalo. If you can get a ride out here or to a nearby city then I'd be happy to take you but if I'm understand what you said a few posts ago you're from Connecticut so I'm not much help.

I hate to say it but your best bet is probably Amtrak. It's expensive (80-100 bucks one way) but really the chances of someone being both willing and able to drive you all the way to the Buffalo area for a local are slim to none. You'd need a place to stay probably both nights (I may be able to provide if Luke can't) and overall you'd just spend way too much to get here for something as unimportant as a local. Anything lower then a state level tournament I really wouldn't bother coming that far for.

This Saturday, at Roberts, the Raiders will be hosting our second (un)official Sealed TEAMS tournament!  We've got a lot of new players eager to learn the game, so if anyone wants to help teach our favorite game, that'd be great!  Cost is $7 (includes three booster packs, food, and other goodies).  Meet at 12 noon, PM if you need directions!

Looking for some feedback on date (not day and time).  I'm right in front of the 6 week mark for tournament application, so I want to know if the following date is okay. It is the Sunday BEFORE Thanksgiving.

I am putting an application in for Sunday, November 20th at 2 PM for a local.  It will be a couple of open categories (likely a T1 & T2 category) with a $5 entry fee.  This time should allow everyone to make it to church and still travel down to our place.

The only negotiable factor is that I could move it forward to the 13th if the 20th interferes with Thanksgiving plans (which I doubt, but I thought I would be courteous).  I avoided the 13th because of the tournament in Waynesburg, PA on the 12th.

Anyway, I'm talking to my group tonight about the desired Promo and then faxing the application in tomorrow. (I suppose you can vote on the promo but I can tell you now: Esther and Angel at Shur are the leading contenders).

I would rather not do this, because everytime I have...I've lost money....lots of it.  That is why I have like 10 Tins unopened now-->a failed booster draft.

Ah, I understand.  Those from NY state?
yes.  Basically, I bought stock on who told me they wanted to play booster....life happened....not as many played booster as estimated....I have the leftovers collecting dust.  I think they will eventually sell.  It just makes me "gun-shy" to hold booster until the current stock is gone.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments

Having extra stock is a great reason to hold booster.  You've already invested the money, why not make it back?

Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments

I signed up for Booster, T1 2P, T2 2P, T2 Multi.  Also, the promo is Esther (I let the person in my playgroup who needs the most deck help to decide the promo.) The Tourney winner cards are Harvest Time.
If you can be here by 1:30 PM then that is ideal to deck check and start by 2 PM.
Categories will likely be run as
Booster                  vs.   T1 2P
Continued Booster  vs. T2 2P
T2 Multi for those who can stay late(r).

Of course, all this is pending Rob's approval (paperwork was faxed Oct. 12.)

Booster                  vs.   T1 2P

Way to force me to decide between making a run at RNRS Booster points, a category I'm trying to win this year, and getting another shot at you  ::)

Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: lp670sv on October 14, 2011, 10:53:10 PM
You're not going for RNRS though. 2 of my goals for this year, win RNRS in Booster and beat Greeson at least once. So it comes down to which of these do I want more. Getting closer to maxing out my local points for booster (possibly) or beating Greeson (possibly) and one of those things is more likely then the other  ::)

It is Sunday, Nov. 20th.  It will start at 2 PM (so you guys have a chance to get here after church.)
I am running categories for experience players against those for inexperience players.
The one-time cost to play all open categories is $5.  Booster Draft is $15 and with the purchase of Booster draft T2 Multi is free if people can stay that long.
2 PM --     T1*/T2 2-Player                              Booster Draft deck build

T2*/T1 2 Player                              Booster Draft Games

Next Round --  T2 Multi for those who can stay late.

* I prefer to play them in this order, but I'm not opposed to reversing the order.

Sorry Alec, I only have 1 Tin leftover, and I can't afford to buy more right now.  :(  My family's dentist bill was too much this month.  :'(

I'm still working out the pairings, so I will have to get back to you on that.  However, my inclination is that not all categories will directly conflict (seeing as so few people want to play T2).

Lancaster NY is the town you go through right before you get to Buffalo when driving down 33. I drive through Lancaster NY once every 2 weeks on my way to hockey practice. There can be more than one city with the same name. Being that you  are from rochester and you know I am also from this area I actually find this response a little insulting.

Rob and you others,  Luke's Church is in LOCKPORT NY not Lancaster!  Its about 30 minutes north of Buffalo.   For you Rob the best way to get there would be the Thruway to the Transit road exit #49 (exit before the Toll Barrier).   Then take Route 78 North to Lockport!

Luke,  BTW  I'm planning on coming !

@ Luke:  if it is March 17th, then I can't make it.  My youth group has a training day in a local soup kitchen then.

@ Rob:  Frankly, there are two lineups depending on how many people show and what they want to play, and how long they can stay to play it.

Jonathan would you happen to have any extra decks, either T1 or T2 that I could borrow tomorrow? I don't have a deck built for tourney play...or a deck at all. I don't even care if it's just a starter deck you have laying around, just so I have something to do other than selling tomorrow.

The girl that ended up playing Jonathan last could not place at all, regardless of differential, unless she won the game (so you know, she couldn't place at all) because her first game ended with a time out win so any one of the 4 people behind her needed only win their game to leap frog her. Broken system is broken and bias against pizza. (she timed out her first game because she got up to get a slice of pizza mid game)
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: robm on February 27, 2012, 07:51:42 AM
its not nessarly broken because she still would have come in second if she did not delay her first game with pizza.

but since she did I got to come in second and i did loss to jonathan in round three.

@ Randall, I have 17 packs of those 50 sleeves for sale still at $2  and 6 deck boxes with 100 sleeves in them for $6.

I just don't like the idea of a person going from the top 2 to not placing because they lost the championship game. It makes no sense and is not done like that in any other form of competition I can think of.

I just don't like the idea of a person going from the top 2 to not placing because they lost the championship game. It makes no sense and is not done like that in any other form of competition I can think of.
What makes no sense is to only look at the last game of a tournament instead of the overall event.  Sure she was in the championship game, but that 1 game doesn't reflect the whole tournament.  Overall, she timed out a game due to pizza (not impressive) and played weaker opponents all the way to the top because of it, and then when finally playing tough competition got beat.

Compare that to someone who won their games at the beginning and therefore played tougher competition to get the chance to be beat by the same person (Jon) but then came back from that defeat to win the rest of their games.

I don't think anyone could look at the overall tournaments of those 2 players and argue that the 2nd player doesn't deserve to rank higher than pizza girl.

P.S.  I'm not trying to be too hard on whoever pizza girl is.  I had a player in my playgroup once who was on track to place at a TN state tourney in T2-mp, but ended up not because he literally fell asleep at the top table in the last round and the other guys couldn't keep waking him up.  I'm still proud of him for making it to that table, and pizza girl should be proud of making it to a championship game at a tournament with SoulSeeker, Robm, and who knows who else :)

She was one of 2 undefeated players so I don't think implying we aren't considering her overall tournament is even remotely fair...the overall tournament got her to the top table, then she lost to Jonathan like everyone does and went from 2nd to either 4th or 5th I don't remember which. THAT doesn't take in to account her whole tournament. She was even beating Jonathan for about half the game. For that matter I believe Redemption is the only CCG that even scores time out wins differently than regular wins.

I'm not striking that out because it's wrong, I just don't know if it is so there is no point in it staying there

OK, so Greeson went undefeated, and everyone agrees that he should win 1st.  The 2nd and 3rd places should go to the other players who did the next best overall.

If the other people who finished ahead of this girl had more complete wins than she did, then they deserved to finish higher in the tournament than she did.  This is the way it should be.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments
Post by: lp670sv on February 27, 2012, 10:59:13 AM
You can't evaluate a "more complete win". A person who time out wins 4-0 did better than someone who wins 5-4. Lost soul differential also isn't far because someone who wins 5-1 but allowed a successful rescue did not have as good of a game as the person who won 5-2 but the 2 is from an early SOG/NJ draw out of complete luck. Players who never had to play Jonathan (which, correct me if I'm wrong Rob, but the eventual second place finisher never player Jonathan that I can remember) shouldn't be able to leap frog the girl who was previously in second. They both had one loss. One of them loss to the eventual champion of the tournament, the other lost to someone who did not place, so who really had the more "complete" tournament.

Hey Alec,
I did play Rob....my opponents, the round we played in, and their comparative finish:
2nd Place Rob        We played in Rd 3
4th Place Kayla*    We played in Rd 4
5th Place Luke       We played in Rd 2
6th Place Aaron**  We played in Rd 1

* The infamous "pizza girl"  To be fair, we were having a late lunch, and she was starving.  Plus, her opponent was her best friend who wanted pizza as well.  She is good-natured and didn't regret her decision despite my warning at the time of the "pizza incident."

** Aaron finished well despite discovering that he was missing 3 key cards to his deck strategy.
Title: Re: Rochester, NY Tournaments

So there's issues with the way Redemption does tournaments.  Surprise.

And this is where I have the problem with the way Redemption tournaments are run. Even if you take Kayla out of this for a minute all 3 of the other people who could have finished second only lost 1 game to the top player. Lost soul differential should not be the end all be all of who places. There's too much luck involved in SOG/NJ to make it a reliable source of who actually did better.

Better suggestions then Alec?

Exactly what I suggested the last time this happened (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-tournaments/tournament-style/)

You can't evaluate a "more complete win".
This is a hilarious statement in this particular situation.  A game where I get to 5 LSs against my opponent is a "more complete win" than a game where I do NOT get to 5 LSs against my opponent because I took time out in the middle of the game to go get pizza.  How can you possibly NOT call the former a "more complete win"?

And this is where I have the problem with the way Redemption tournaments are run...all 3 of the other people who could have finished second only lost 1 game to the top player. Lost soul differential should not be the end all be all of who places.
Here I agree with you (which is why I'm glad that head-to-head already counts more than differential).

This particular situation maybe but overall a tie out win does not automatically mean you did not play as good of a game as a player who just barely scrapped out a win against an inferior opponent, but that's the way the system is currently setup. Any regulation win automatically counts more then a time out win no matter what the situation.

I think both sides have valid points, however if you want to see how another style works out then someone can host a tourney with elimnation or something like that .  locals and i believe districts dont haveto be swiss.

in regards to the last tourney i did play jonathan and lost to him. Then won my last game to come in second.  There were a lot of variable in that outcome. Had he lost i would have come in third. Once he won and aaron  Had 2 ls souls won in his game then i came in second.  My wife came in third sith one lost soul less then me.

In other news there are more tourneys coming up. I am hoping to hostin march or april.

if this is true than I would like just a general survey of how many people would show up to a non- swiss style tourney, using the format in the post i linked above.

I am lazy and didn't feel like reading the post since it was long but I would love to play in a tournament that isn't swiss. I am not a huge fan of that style.

its true as long as the tourney host guide on cactus is still up 2 date. You can download and look under the tournament levels specific rules.

If she allows there could be room for two on the sectional couch and two or three on the floor

we do have one cat that will likey hide during the friday night part of the tourney.

If Roberts kicks you guys out you can sleep at my house if need be. I'll say limit 4 people for now but that could change once I clean my room and discover I actually have SPACE again. So many empty new egg boxes.

This will help me collect any supplies i may need.

Pre pay and you will be entered a second time into the drawing. As well a chance to get a free sword of the spirit redemption poster.

send paypal to laine.mulye@yahoo.com with info on what you will be playing.

The new season of redemption is upon us and hopefully this New Yorks year for some big tournaments.

Would anyone be interested in an impromtu tournment, if we had one on september 8th?

Let me know your thoughts, while I am busy with many activities this fall I still want to try to do a lot with Redemption this year.

I haven't had any problems with just hosting the impromtu, and then sending all the info in.  I think I've done at least three that way.   If there is enough interest to have it and as long as my wife is cool with it I will probabaly do, t1-2,multi, t2-2, multi, and sealed. Probably goshen for the promo.

Hoping we hear some new about when the new stuff will be coming out so we can get some new promos in before christmas.

5 categories in one day?!?  Wow, you are ambitious.  My boys and I should make it on Sept. 8.  It will be their first weekend after school starts so maybe it will help them unwind.  They will want to play the T1 categories.  I prefer the 2 Player categories.  AND none of us will play sealed because I'm assuming that costs more.

Unless others decide they can come it would probably just be the four of us, so we could go through all four categories in a easy amount of time.  Hopefully my cousin can watch the kids for part of it.  What time would you like to arive to start? 9?  10? I'm leaving that more open ended to your arrival. I will leave it at 5 dollars to enter the tourney and will provided food and take donations for it to help resupply the redemption fun to host more later on in the fall.

I would really like to see regionals come to NY next summer and may have a place in mind for that if Randell or others are not thinking of bidding.  I sure Luke would like to get states next summer.

Updated count for the food:
I just came from the Reception, and Aaron said that he likely will not make it now.  His boss (who happen to be at the wedding) said he could save a vacation day if he came in on Saturday.  Aaron is leaning towards saving a vacation day (by going into work) instead of coming to the tournament. Sorry for the flip flop, but I figured you would want the information as soon as I knew.

My local is planned for Sun. Nov. 18th (around 1 PM is deck check).   I am deciding between T2 Multi or Sealed as the 4th category.
EDIT: I dropped both Multi categories and went with Sealed and Teams to go with the 2 player events.
My district is slated for Sun.  Dec. 2nd.  We will have the standard 4 (or I can swap one for sealed).

Local Tournament Monday, January 21 (MLK Jr. Day)
Lockport Alliance Church
555 Davison Rd
Lockport, NY 14094

Cost: $10 for the day(includes lunch).  Booster Draft will be $12 in addition to that (includes a TXP Pack)

Please let us know if you are attending so we can plan for lunch.

10am- Deck Check In
10:15- Type I - 2 Player
1pm Lunch Break

After Lunch
Type 1 Multiplayer
Booster Draft
(Possible Type 2)

I'm hoping to make this with my boys but we are battling the flu.  We've all had it for 4 days.  MLK day would be day 8 and I'm told with rest we would be over it in 6.

If you guys don't have T2...then does the price change if we leave after T1 2p or is it $10 regardless?

PM me the address info, etc

If you end up going to Luke's tournament let me know. I don't play anymore but would still be interested in meeting you eventually and he's not too far from me,

Jonathan
We'd love to have you & your crew!  Hope you get well soon.
The cost for the tourney is only $5.
I wanted my crew to bring some extra for food, especially if it went beyond dinner (it should not)
We've got lunch covered.
Hope to see you then!
Joe

Thank you for your reply Joe.

Unfortunately, my boys didn't finish their homework (from a week without school from the flu) today and must work on it tomorrow.  My wife asked me not to go and stay to help her with the kids (she rarely requests this of me...so I take note when she does ask), so I am heartbroken to say that I will not make it.  I like to support my local area tournaments with my presence, but the flu kind of messed up my plans to play with you guys.  Hopefully, the next time I plan to come it will not be so ill-fated.  :'(

Wow Luke,
Three golds & a silver.

Great job!
