For those who don't already know, one of our members (Matt Archibald, boardname - crustpope) has a 1&1/2 yr old son named Micah who has recently been diagnosed with muscular distrophy. The diagnosis means Micah might not live past 20 and could be in a wheelchair by 12. This presents their family with various needs including above normal physical and financial burdens. As friends, members of Matt's community, and most importantly brothers and sisters in Christ, we would like to support his family. Our first and greatest support is praying for them because our hope and theirs is in the power and love of Christ Jesus. Faith also takes action. So we want to host a Redemption tournament where all the proceeds will go to support Matt's family. Considering the nature and longevity of the condition, I think it would be great if this becomes an annual event. Matt lives in Trenton, OH so this will be hosted nearby. The details of the tournament are:
Fri. Nov. 9th 2012, 8:00 P.M. and Sat. Nov. 10th starting at 9:00 A.M. to when we finish.
The same events as last year: Sealed Teams 8:00 P.M. Fri., Type 1 Multi 9:00 A.M. Sat., and Teams Sat. afternoon. other stuff as there is interest.
$10 for 1st category and additional categories are whatever amount you want (or can) put in
There will be some snacks and refreshments available. I anticipate that people will have dinner on their own Fri. before we start. We will probably order pizzas on Sat. for lunch.
The location is Matt Archibald's church in Trenton OH:
220 N Miami St. Trenton, OH 45067
My number is 937-479-1421.
There will be lodging available Fri. night at the church. If other needs are presented like special lodging needs or pickup at an airport, I will do my best to coordinate help with those.
*** Edit from ReyZen -- I have sticky'd this post for as long as Redemption-for-Micah events are run. Let us try our very best to make the trek to OH for this cause. Peace and blessings! ***

I will be putting in the application soon. After that, I'll use this for pre-registering and keeping track of people coming, etc.
-
If I am able, I would support this event with my attendence.
-
That's awesome. Please let me know dates and such once more planning has been done, I'm very interested in attending.
-
I'm also interested in attending/helping with this. I actually really like the idea of focusing it on something like the T2-only tournament that Bill runs each year. Since he's already got dibs on T2, I would suggest TEAMS or SUPER BOOSTER (ie. Unlimited, Prophets, Womens, Warriors, Apostles, Patriarchs, Kings, Angel Wars, Priests, FooF, RoA, TxP, Disciples).
If you did TEAMS, then there would be virtually no upfront costs, and therefore more profit to help out Matt and his family.
If you did SUPER BOOSTER, then you'd have to spend a lot to get all the supplies, but you could also charge a LOT for a draft of that magnitude. The packs alone would be worth over $50, and people might be willing to pay $50 since it would be going to a good cause. And if you could get Ken at 3LG to donate the Warriors and/or Womens packs, then this could also make a good profit for Matt and his family.
One thing to consider though is that my guess is that Bill loses money every year on the T2-only tournament. I know that he helps some people with travel expenses (who come from long distances), plus all the food that he has available, and I vaguely think there might have been extra prizes as well. The point is that he does that tournament because he is a generous guy and loves the game. And that generosity has helped establish that tourney as the nation's premier tournament outside of Nats. But it doesn't raise money.
If a tournament is focused on raising money, then it will by necessity be less generous. But unfortunately, that will also probably limit its ability to really become as big a thing as the T2-only. This is just something to keep in mind as you are doing your planning.
Another thing to consider is that most of the top T2 players go to the T2-only because it is the best tune-up for Nats all year. But Booster at Nats would NOT be like SUPER BOOSTER, so this wouldn't really be a tune-up. On the other hand, if this tournament focused on TEAMS, then it could turn into the nation's best tune-up for that event at Nats.
-
I wonder if a redemption tournament would be the most efficient way. If we did something at the type 2 only, for example, the people coming from out of town would have to pay a lot of money for travel expenses, probably more than they would be able to give. Just seems like wasted money. Perhaps there could be multiple tournament locally would be better or at nationals too, that is centralized.
At nationals I don't know what we could make money on... $5 for people sleeping at the church? Although that would undermine the advertized free stay at the church... I guess I am just spit balling. :)
-
My input is that only Prophets (Micah!) can be the offense and reenlist old school ANB rules(Matt's favorite combo deck) for mass abuse.
I would be curious what Matt's thoughts on tournament style.
-
Another possibility would be to do a live online tournament. That way it would not only be free for the host, but it would also eliminate travel expenses for all the players. Perhaps everyone who played could pay a $10 entry fee (by PayPal or similar alternative), and all the funds raised could go to help Matt & Family.
We did a live online tourney last summer, and it was really fun. Of course that one was free (and part of ROOT), but it showed that it can be done. And this would open it up to the whole country to participate.
Guesstimates regarding money raised:
TEAMS Extravaganza = $10 entry fee * 30 people attending = $300 -$0 expenses = $300 profit
SUPER BOOSTER = $50 entry fee * 30 people attending = $1500 - ? (depending on donations) = $?
T1-2p Live Online Tournament = $10 entry fee * ? people = $?
It seems likely that the maximum number of people who would actually attend a tournament there in Cincy would be about 30 (I think that the T2-only tourney draws about that many). That maxes out the first option at $300. The second option would max out at $1500, but could actually end up being less than $300 if you weren't able to get a lot of the packs donated. The Live Online Tournament would have basically no maximum since a virtually unlimited number of people could play (but it would take at least 150 people playing (unlikely) to make the same amount as the SUPER BOOSTER (assuming you can get all the packs donated).
So IF you can get all the packs donated, then the SUPER BOOSTER is probably the best way to go. But if you can't, then the T1-2p Live Online Tournament is probably the best way to go.

This post brought a tear of joy to my eye ;)
First of all, I like this idea and I think it is so awesome that the redemption community is willing to help out like this. I also want people to know that we are not in desperate financial straights right now. Currenlty Micah has few additional expenses. We will have to go to several more dr's appointments and specialist fees will eat into the budget, but currently Micah does not require any expensive equipment or treatments. That will change with time, but I am just saying this doesn't have to raise all the $$ in one tournament, there are several ways we can probably try to raise money.
As for SS asking for my input. I dont know. They all sound good. Super booster sounds good but it wont raise $1500 after you pay for stock and I dont want people going broke paying to play.
An online tournament is nice, but I like the idea of meeting and fellowshiping with people but I also understand that people might want to save on travel expenses.
I dont know, but having a type 2 multi table with 4 ANB decks sounds like fun! Also we are Banning Nazareth and Cesaraea Philipi!
-

The thinking here is long term. Because most of us are not wealthy, it is better to start now and raise some each year than wait 10+ years until the need is great and then not be able to do much. Not judging others, but my conscience would say "since you knew about the need way in advance, why did you wait until the last minute?"
I wonder if a redemption tournament would be the most efficient way.
I'd say it definitely isn't. It would be way more efficient for people to just mail money to Matt. If anyone wants to bless his family that way then glory to God. Why do a tournament then? As Matt mentioned it is also a chance for fellowship. My guess is that it may be difficult for him to travel to Nats and other tournaments in the future. This may give him another chance to come and play. There are also people that may only be able to contribute $10 dollars and would feel awkward giving that to Matt but are open to contributing to the community effort. There are other people who might not give anything but an opportunity like this encourages them to join in. It would probably be difficult to get a resturaunt to just give his family money but we might find one willing to donate food to a fundraising event.
Regarding the idea of multiple local tournaments or doing something at Nats or doing an online tournament, they all sound good.
Regardless we feel led as his fellow Ohioans to do a local here. If God builds that up into a huge event then glory to God. I won't say if people should try other venues because I think they should follow God's leading on that. If all those other ideas are tried and it takes away from our local fundraiser but ends up with more total support for Micah then the goal is achieved and glory to God. We encourage people to come join our local event or start their own, either way it is an opportunity to serve Christ by serving His children.
For our local, I wasn't going to do booster because I wanted 100% of the proceeds to be given and since we couldn't afford the supplies we'd have to use some of the donations to cover that. If somehow the packs could be covered then I'll definitely reconsider that. If we were going to do a super booster, what about splitting the packs and drafting more than once? I was also thinking this was going to be an official tournament so it would conform to the standards but if their is more interest in alternative play, then we're open to that too. Or we could do both.
I thought it might be good to focus on one category like teams and have 6 rounds but that might not draw some people (including in our local playgroup). Would it be better to be focused or to have 2-4 categories to draw more people and have them register in more events?
I figure October or April might be the best time of year for it, thoughts?
I appreciate the interest and feedback and look forward to seeing any and all of you come join us.
-
It would probably be difficult to get a resturaunt to just give his family money but we might find one willing to donate food to a fundraising event.
This is a GREAT idea. It would be a way for you to have a lot of food for people without any costs to cut into the fundraising, and also a chance for the restaurant to participate in being a blessing.
Regardless we feel led as his fellow Ohioans to do a local here.
If that is the case, then just be aware that the biggest local tournaments only draw in about 30 people. That's still a good number though and $300 a year for 10 years is still $3000 or more if it's invested until Matt's family needs it.
I won't say if people should try other venues because I think they should follow God's leading on that.
Since I'm currently running ROOT, and have experience with hosting a live online tourney, I might end up doing that myself. We'll have to see.

That makes sense. There's not many people who have the number of packs that would be needed to donate. You could try Ken at 3LG, TechnoEthicist, and even Rob himself. Perhaps you could get Ken to do 30 packs of Womens and Warriors, and TE to do 30 packs of Apostles and Patriarchs and Kings, and Rob to do 30 packs of Angel Wars and Priests and TxP. I might be able to do 30 packs of Original and Prophets. Then you'd just need some other forum people to chip in to do the FooF, RoA, and Di. Hopefully 3 more people would step up to the plate and each take 1 of those.

The T2-only has really succeeded by focusing on one thing. I think that is probably the pattern to follow. As for time of year, I think October is probably a good time. April is when people are already traveling to State tournaments, so you'd have more competition for people's time and money. October has traditionally been pretty dead time as far as tournaments go, so it could use something like this to spice it up :)
-
This is a great idea! I can't say whether or not we'd be able to make it since that would depend on a lot of things, but I would be glad to support it. :)
However, I want to make it clear that I would not be able to donate Warrior packs since I don't even have that many left. If you want to do regular booster draft, I may be able to help with typical packs (Unlimited, Prophets, Apostles, Patriarchs for sure). I'll let you decide what you'd like to do, and I'll see what I'm able to do at that time to help. I just wanted to make sure you weren't counting on me for something I can't do.
-
I want to make it clear that I would not be able to donate Warrior packs since I don't even have that many left.
Thanks for letting us know Ken. I of course wasn't volunteering you for those, but you were the only person I could think of who was likely to even have 30 Warriors or 30 Womens packs. Since you don't, I'm guessing no one else does either, which makes the whole idea of SUPER BOOSTER pretty impossible.
So then my suggestion if you want to have a local there in Cincy would be to focus on TEAMS. You could make it THE tournament of the year for the best TEAMS around the country to test their stuff with all the new cards that will still be pretty novel in October. As a sideline you could also have a 2nd event which could be a T2-mp event where every deck is required to have at least 1 copy of ANB (just for Matt) :)
-
I think that this is a spectacular idea that God has laid on JP's heart. I know that God loves when we come together and do something for his glory like this. Why not do both an online tournament and a live tournament at the same time and then have the online winner play the live player FTW? That would certainly be different.
-

you can try contacting rubberbandwarrior here on the forums, i know for a fact he still has sealed womens and warriors boxes. he donated packs of womens for a super draft at mo state.
concerning donations, if someone doesnt have actual money to donate but still feels the need to donate, redemption cards would still be a good donation. given you'd have to resell them, but they are still worth money and every little bit adds up.
-
I've updated some details in the first post.
We had some good feedback for this at Nationals; several people have expressed interest in coming and/or helping out. I know Matt and his family also appreciate the prayer for them.
To Master KChief (my current computer won't let me copy/paste >:()
I realized that even if we could get the packs for super booster one year, it would be very difficult to continue that every year. Since the category is also one that Matt doesn't really like, we will choose other options. However, getting packs or cards as donations is still a great idea.
We could sell them as suggested and/or use them as additional prize support so it is on the Regional level instead of local. We have gotten a couple donations already and if it works out, one that will be really cool.
If anyone wants to do this, they can contact and mail it to me or uthminister (Travis Brown). We will acknowledge help unless you want to keep it anonymous. If anyone would want documentation for tax purposes, Travis has said that we can get that through his church.
-
Because both of the categories are multi, we want some unofficial options for 2-player plus we don't want the people coming in on Fri. night to be bored! suggestions so far:
memorizing Leviticus, basketball competition, elimination style type1 2 player category, regular ironman, anything ironman (the same except you can challenge with any category of play), sealed teams?, by the book (ask Travis), Redemption RPG (if I can get enough worked out by then), Bible pictionary, heathen board games, Bible improv, etc.
any feedback/suggestions/requests from anyone that is coming?
-
John M.'s crew will be stopping at Roberts Wesleyan college (my place) for some FooFerRAH drafting Friday night. If anyone else would like to attend, we can provide free lodging and food.
-
By the Book is a broken category... Travis even had the ideal deck already built but didn't know it ;)
I like the idea of a 1-1 single or double elim basketball tourney though.

John, you already avoid me in Redemption. You do NOT want to see the mad skills of this old man in basketball. As a team, you can hide from saying the phrase, "I was beat by old man Greeson." ;) :-*
I have the date, and I am going to talk to my wife about it. I'm highly confident that I will be there.

I like this idea. I remember the first time I introduced TEAMS on a large scale at Columbus Nats we had prizes for both of the members of the winning TEAM be 1 of every pack released up to that point. I think people were pretty excited about it, and it would make a great prize again for this tournament. If you could get enough donated the first year to do a Super Booster, then that would be enough to use as prizes instead for a decade of tournaments.
Because both of the categories are multi, we want some unofficial options for 2-player... basketball competition, ...sealed teams?
Type Ban seems to have gained a bit of traction here on the boards, and might make an interesting unofficial category. If it's a TEAMS tournament, it would be interesting to have a basketball tourney that was 2-on-2 where your Redemption teammate had to be your basketball teammate. I also really liked the idea of "Sealed TEAMS" when Travis talked to me about it. It would really equalize the differences between the 2 starter decks since both TEAMS would have both decks, and each TEAM would have 6 packs to power-up their decks. This sounds way cooler than regular Sealed to me, and I'd like to see that as an unofficial category sometime.
3 rounds of type 1 multi and teams
I'm hoping that 3 rounds won't be enough. That would only be able to handle 8 TEAMS worth of people. I would suggest planning on 4 rounds of both events.
-
I also fully endorse the basketball tournament 2-2 or 3-3. but more importantly MICAH fully endorses the basketball tournament! ;)
Sealed Teams seems to be a really facinating event. Perhaps we can arrange that for an unofficial Friday Night event? I have 8 pre-sleaved g/h decks already so if we can build on this, maybe we can do some "playtesting on this and see what happens?
-
How many of us actually need the packs we win? I mean honestly, if I win a tournament, every pack I pull I have the cards. I would encourage some of the top players to set aside some of their winnings (perhaps a percentage of them) for this event, or following events for this purpose. Just a thought. :)
-
booster teams sounds even more fun...
-

I agree that Booster TEAMS sounds fun. But Booster is fun already. The beauty of Sealed TEAMS is that it has the potential to take one of the least fun events and actually make it worth playing :)

Exactly. With 6 decks to split among the teammates there can be some interesting deck building strategies. Plus the balance of the decks will make Teams more enjoyable. I dont like the way Teams is going with an emphasis on speed and the Sog/NJ combo
-
It's great to see Sealed TEAMS gaining traction. When we did it, we also randomized the teammates, placing experienced players with newer ones. I'd love to play it again.
-
I will organize the sealed teams portion of the tournament if that would be acceptable JP.
-
I'll spread the word around the PA region.

I really like this idea too. When I was originally designing the TEAMS format, part of my thinking was that it would be a great way to teach the game. By mixing experienced and inexperienced players, it gives the chance for the veteran player to teach a lot of neat tricks to their partner as they play together.
-
The players in MN could support you by having a sealed teams event at our November tournament. Players would make a donation to play and we would send you the money we collect.
Maybey every play group could host a sealed teams in November so it could trully be a National event/fund raiser.
-
Now that is good thinking. I really like that idea as well, especially for those who would not want to travel so far or would rather their travel expenses be donated to the cause. Nice wild Bill!
-
Any chance I could either car pool or meet up with the North East group coming from Rochester?
-
I would also like to hear some travel plans for groups driving through western PA. Olijar, I can get myself up to the Pittsburgh area Friday the 4th if you are planning to go.
-
I very much regret that it appears that I probably won't be able to make it to this tournament after all. My daughters have a Bible Quizzing tournament that weekend which will mean that my whole family will be traveling elsewhere. I really wanted to come, and hope to make it next year!
-
What are the travel plans for the MA and NY playergroups? Could I meet up with you guys somewhere and follow the caravan down?

I take I-86 to Erie, PA where I pick up I-290/90 (?) and head to Cleveland. At Cleveland, I get on I-271 (?) until I get to I-71. I typically come down I-71 then cut across I-? from Columbus to Dayton where I pick up I-75. The church is a quarter mile off I-75. But that's me.*
I'm not sure how Randall and I will connect up (assuming he is wanting too). Also, I'm not sure when I'm heading down just yet.
-
My attendance is fairly shaky right now, depends on a lot....
-
I am tentatively planning on coming, but hopefully hitching a ride with Old Man Greeson. However, like Randall, a lot of elements have to fall into place for this to work. Does anyone know of somewhere in PA that's close to Greeson's route, where I could possibly stash my car for a day or two? Money is a big concern for me, as I currently have $60 to my name, and it's all going to specific places. I would love to support Matt, albeit with more emotional support than financial, but as I mentioned, everything has to fall into place. I suppose prayers come in here.

Your best bet would probably be some kind of arrangement with Alex. Of course, that's assuming he's gonna be going, in which case I repeat my question about travel plans from Pittsburgh.
-
The bad news:
Only one person auditioned for the play I was going to direct....
Good news:
...on the 5th!
There's a good chance I'll be coming.

Yeah, I am thinking about it. If something with Greeson doesn't work, the 3 of us could try to drive with my car, I probably get the best gas mileage (around 28 on highway I think).
-
That's about what I get. Plus, if we take my car, we won't have to find a place for me to stash it. I'm also talking to Matt Townsend about also coming with us. We could theoretically then, fit one more (I also have a lot of trunk space). Anyone from PA looking at possibly going? It's starting to sound like shoving five of us in a car is a better option than having someone pick us all up.

I am a big man, so I'd be ok with 4.
But yeah, I'd be fine with riding with you. Anything to cut out gas. I've been the church before as well so I shall guide.

Well so have I, so I can also guide. Also, I'd prefer five rather than four, as that cuts down on all of our total gas costs. We can just work out a system (depending on who all we end up with), to make it work. Let me put this out as an official offer then:
If anyone from Pennsylvania would like to carpool to this event, let me know. We will try to get five of us in a vehicle, for (hopefully) around $20 of gas each (maybe a bit more, depending).

Nevermind. I can't go. Sorry guys. My campus ministry is doing our Fall Retreat that weekend.
-
The chances of me making this tournament have actually gone up since I last posted. I'd say it's around 65% at this point.
There is also a decent (30%) chance that I'll be able to bring along a few people with me :)
-
If I can get a ride with Greeson (which looks like it's happening) I'll be going.
-
Question ??
Where do we send our donations ?? Who do we make out the check too ??
-
Note- Unless someone can pick me up from the Central PA area, I will be unable to attend. I can cover the gas it would cost for someone to go out of their way, as well pitch in a little extra for gas to make it worth the while, but that's it. If anyone can do this, please let me know ASAP. Otherwise, I will donate another way.
-
If you would like to make a donation, you can make it out to Matthew Archibald and put "Redemption for Micah" in the memo line. I had intended to make an account specifically for that, but I have been unable to do that to this point. Send the check to"

Sat. Nov. 5th 2011, 9:00 A.M. to 6:30 P.M. (this may go later if we need to add rounds) (start side events on Fri. as well)
3 rounds of type 1 multi and teams (other side stuff like ...basketball, ...)
I have some guys who are particularly interested in the idea of a 2-on-2 Basketball tournament on Fri evening. So if any of you guys that are planning on coming to this are going to be there Fri night, watch out. I'll go ahead and make a public challenge that no 2 guys out there will be able to defeat my teammate and me in BOTH basketball Fri night AND the TEAMS tournament on Sat.
Who's in? :)

If I can talk my wife into pulling my kids out of school earlier AND Randall out of school earlier.
I'm pretty confident...Matt and I could do both.
My theory (which is yet to be disproven): Wisdom and age beats youth and speed every time.
Or we could push that 2 on 2 tourney off until Saturday night. 8)

I can leave just after noon at the latest.
I had an idea. A lot of players get frustrated by RLK's in multi, so can we split T1-MP into two groups? We'll divide into the two groups by the number of lifetime RNRS points on Tim Maly's list. One will be the REPs, with >= 50 points. The rest can play without the threat of amazing players.
/Of course he doesn't have the points from last year, but what's one year in the grand scheme of things?
-
Can someone tell me the final decisions on what will be played and when? Rebeccah and I can only be there Saturday until around 2pm. Thanks, Allen

Wow, I like this challenge. Jon and I should take this up! and you know you cant handle out secret FBTN/Banding/pre-block-ignore offense combined with our cannot be ignored/cannot be negated/ CANNOT BE STOPPED defense.
just sayin!
Micah will be there around lunchtime on Saturday. I will be there all day.
I apologize for not being on here as much recently. I have been very busy trying to complete my masters degree and have had added responsibilities at work. I will do my best to be on in the future.

Sounds like we've got at least 1 taker. As for your theory Jon, we've got age and wisdom (me) as well as youth and speed (Brian), so I think we've got the best of both worlds. We'll just consider our game to be a preview of the UK-NC matchup coming soon :)
So who else is in for a game of B-ball at the tourney this weekend?
-
I'll clone myself so I can compete in both events.

I'll clone myself so I can compete in both events.
As impressive as that would be to see, I do have 1 or 2 other guys coming with me who will probably also want to play. If it's only 1, then he'd probably be glad to team up with you :)
-
That'd be fun. I was planning on bringing people from my playgroup, but none of the eligible members could come. Otherwise I'll stand behind Greeson and point out all his mistakes.
-
I can leave just after noon at the latest.
Leave from my place at noon or your place at noon....that is kind of a 1 1/2 hour difference. ???
-
Leave from my place. My last class finishes at 11, but I need to get lunch/pack.
-
Pack tonight, get lunch on the road.
-
Pack tonight, get lunch on the road.
Says the one who's not coming. You totally need to, our Uber-totally-not-what-Greeson's-planning-combo would wipe out everyone in TEAMS.

Hey, if someone wants to give me $100 for gas, I'll be there.
-
Hey, if someone wants to give me $100 for gas, I'll be there.
$100 for gas?!? I like the way you think!
Related note: Randall, if my playgroup member (Aaron) can't go (checking with him tonight) and your person doesn't go, then I can take the Honda which gets 10 more miles per gallon over the van thus significantly lowering gas prices. (But we also lose satellite radio).
-
My guy can't come, that's for sure.
-
I may not be able to attend but I support this event. If this became a yearly fundraiser I would hold a fundraising tournament next year.
-
Well I thought that the inaugural Redemption for Micah tournament was a HUGE success. I don't have the exact numbers, but I think there was about 20 people in attendance including previous National champions from OH and NY. And fitting with the theme of the Redemption community coming together to team up with Matt and his family to support them, the theme of the whole event was teamwork.
Friday night, this was displayed as many of the people played a new "Sealed TEAMS" category that personally I think is a really nice improvement on a relatively stale category. At the same time, I was playing some Lord of the Rings RISK where my teammate and I (the forces of good) handily defeated the forces of evil by eliminating them from the board before the ring of power even got close to Mt. Doom. It was a fun game, and a great way to start.
Saturday started off great with some delicious doughnuts, and a really exciting T1-mp tournament. In my first game (at the bottom table) I was able to get to an early lead and cruised to a victory 5-2-0. The most notable memory from that game was the lack of heroes. After several turns, there still wasn't a single hero on the table for any player.
The second game was a really intense one (as they always are when Jon Greeson, Matt Archibald, and I in the same game). The 2 strongest memories I have from that game were early on when I had a tough decision whether to CM Matt's hero who would've gotten LS #2 (with GoYS already down). Jon of course thought it was an easy decision, and that I was a noob to even question it. In the end I did it, and considering Matt ended up with 4, it was a good thing. Then later Jon had to decide whether to CM a hero also going for LS #2, and suddenly the decision became a tough one. It's interesting how a CM seems to increase in value when it's yours :) The other main memory was when Jon gave Matt his LS #4 so quickly that I didn't have a chance to play Burial on it (since it was the only one there), and therefore I ended up playing Burial on my own LS (also the only one there) when Jon broke through my defense to take it immediately after Matt's turn. Talk about things coming back to bite you :) I ended up coming back for the victory 5-4-3?-3?
The 3rd and final round was again with Matt and Dakota, but switched Jon out for Rick (also a formidable foe). The thing that stood out to me most in this game was that I never drew GoYS, and was just waiting the entire game for the FAs to come my way. However, amazingly no one ever drew one, and I was able to just gradually get to 5 LSs and the victory. Joseph was MVP for me despite the fact that Rick sent him to the bottom of my deck at least 3 times :)
-
After T1-mp ended, we had a break for lunch, and it was lasagna which is my favorite meal in the world. Delores ROCKS!
We also started the early rounds of the 2-on-2 basketball tournament. Brian Jones and I teamed up for basketball AND the afternoon Redemption event and challenged all comers. In our first b-ball game we played Travis Brown (uthminister) and Rebeccah Collins. We had a very fun if lopsided game. The second round we played Dakota and Rod Stewart (who thankfully came out of retirement for this tournament). It was closer, but we still won pretty comfortably. In the championship, we matched up with Jon "UNC" Greeson (SoulSeeker) and Matt "IU" Archibald (Crustpope). They started off strong and were winning for a while, but faded late and Brian and I were able to charge back for the victory and bragging rights until next year :)
While these games were happening between rounds, we were also playing the T1-TEAMS event. In the first round Brian and I played against Dakota and Kayleb Matthews who were running a combination of Genesis and Prophets. They had an AMAZING draw and jumped out to an early lead with GoYS, AotL, SoG/NJ, but after that I was able to shut them out with my Egyptians. Meanwhile Brian started taking LSs and we ended up winning 5-3.
Second round we played against Jon Greeson's 2 sons who were playing a nasty BTNB pair of decks that seemed to never run out of heroes to attack with and negate all our abilities. Thankfully my Herod's were able to stop that from going anywhere, and this time both Brian and I were able to take some LSs and we ended up winning 5-0.
The last round we were matched up with the same team that we played for the championship in basketball (Jon and Matt). They had a really nasty PG/Brown defense that we were actually only able to break through 1 time the entire game. However, our defense was also able to keep them from breaking through the entire game until the final turn. Thus we ended up tied for that game, and it all came down to LS differential, where we were blessed to be in the lead by a single LS.
So when all was said and done, I was surprised to have gone through 3 events without losing a single game. Against the level of competition that was there, that was considerably better than I thought would happen, and I give God all the glory.
And even more importantly than the outcome of the games was the fact that when everything was counted up at the end of the day, the event had raised a lot of money to help out the Archibald family as they are preparing for the inevitable medical expenses in Micah's future. Back when we were first planning this, I was optimistically hoping that we might raise $300 with the format that we ended up choosing. But thanks to the generosity of so many people, the final total was actually $500. It really touches my heart how the Redemption community has come together on this, and I'm just glad that I was able to be a part of it.
Next year hopefully even more of you will be able to join us :)

There are a few errors in Prof's report.
1. I played my CM first, and it was a tough decision because I was balancing "taking a dive" for Matt and playing competitively. The reason I considered the "dive" because I drove to Cincy with the sole intent of blessing Micah and by extension Matt. So I wanted Matt to win all categories.
2. Prof U's burial was a spite move. I was in last with 1 lost soul while the other two players were at 3 or 4 souls each.
3. I am confident that in the final table....Matt and I had the superior Teams decks. Unfortunately, as Mark described, we finished in a 1-1 tie for 2 reasons....
a.) Mark's slow play (which conveniently benefits defensive players) :P
b.) despite mass drawing....I couldn't gain a crucial card, and despite my teammate's mass drawing he couldn't gain 2 crucial cards. With poor draws of both decks...we still tied 1-1.
However, I was disappointed that I couldn't get Matt the 1st place for him in a tournament meant to support him. At least, Matt got a great display of many of the new cards. Other than that, I had a great time and it is always fun to have verbal maneuvering competitions with Mark in multi-player. It is the only redeemable quality of T1 Multi.
Other facts that Mark failed to mention:
his generosity to my kids was much appreciated.
his sound advice in helping grow playgroups is very valuable.
his compliments are flattering but I am not a "formidable foe" in multi.
our banter about my "chip on your shoulder" was hilarious and will not soon be forgotten.
As always, many great friends and memories are tied to Ohio [and it's armpit extension KY ;) ]...thanks for that everyone!

It was a blessing to have all that traveled to Crosspointe for the tournament. Redemption for Micah will indeed be an annual tournament as things stand right now and we hope to grow it not for our glory or even for more money for the Archibald family but for the glory of God. When His people come together to love and support one another it tells a wonderful story to those looking on.
$500 was raised at the tournament with all proceeds of concessions, product, and entry fees going to that total. Absolutely no money was taken by the church or by the organizers. If you would like to add to our total this year, please send your gifts in check form made out to Matt Archibald to:
Redemption for Micah Fundriaiser
c/o Crosspointe Church of Christ
5630 State Route 122
Franklin, OH 45005
If you would like to send it directly to Matt, please feel free to PM crustpope for his information.

2. Prof U's burial was a spite move. I was in last with 1 lost soul while the other two players were at 3 or 4 souls each.
Actually I wasn't feeling spiteful at all. After you broke through my defense, Burial was my only way to keep you from getting LS #2 (with GoYS down and SoG/NJ still coming). It also was my only way to keep Matt from walking in to take it when it was his turn again, and that would've been #5 for him (thanks to your donation). I still think it was a logical move.
a.) Mark's slow play (which conveniently benefits defensive players) :P
Interestingly enough, the ONLY game the entire tournament that I timed out was the TEAMS game that had Jon in it. Many other games timed out in the tournament in both T1-mp and TEAMS, but none of mine did except that one. So maybe the problem isn't me :)

I actually like T1-mp for other reasons as well, but you are totally right that the verbal jousting is a ton of fun when you and I are in the same game. Especially when we get in a competition about which of us is the smallest threat and should just be ignored :)
P.S. I could mention that Jon totally forgot to mention anything about his crushing defeat in basketball, and my amazing 100% 3-point percentage in the game including the game winning shot. But as he always says about the UK-UNC matchups, I'll just be the bigger man and let that go :)

I certainly hope you are not implying that I slowed that game down because everyone at the table and those watching would know better! I didn't have a single time out either, and you were my first...so that argument is a wash. Additionally, in our game, my turns were the quickest of the four (well, Brian's turns were about as fast). Therefore, I think it is unfair to blame me for your alleged slower play when I become your opponent.

All I remember is a five minute argument about the ability to negate Manny when GoJ is out.

Received a check in the mail today taking out total to $600.

It was such a blessing to have such a wonderful redemption family gathering there. Micah and his mommy made an appearance around lunchtime to say hi to everyone. In spite of the fact that i did not place first in any of the categories, I was grateful to play competitively in both categories being at the final tables in both categories. Thanks to everyone who donated money and thanks so much to Jonathan Peguinot and Travis Brown for organizing and hosting this event. My wife was overwhelmed when I gave her the total, IN her wildest dreams she did not think it could raise $250 and we were blessed with more than double that amount! Thanks so much!
-
I was grateful to play competitively in both categories being at the final tables in both categories.
Yeah, you played great all 3 categories (including the B-ball tourney)!
-
Received a check in the mail today taking out total to $600.
Matt reported that the other tournament donations took the total to about $800. They have used this to help start a Health Savings Account for Micah.
Praise God for His help, provision, and love that He shares and is expressed through the body of Christ helping one another.
It is going to be another busy year but I hope this year we can at least double last years result. I would like to aim high and trust God with the results.
-
Hope to make it to Nats and have more to announce by then but this is a quick update.
Got to see Matt at the OH state tourney which was great (along with seeing the rest of you)! It sounds like their is a mix of blessings from God and continuing challenges they are going through. Things are not as bad for Micah as some kids experience by now but they are starting to see signs of muscle scarring, etc. They are hoping to get the trial medication by next spring.
Still expecting a fall date but not sure which week yet.
We currently have 2 boxes of Disciples packs, 2 boxes of Texp packs, 2 sets of new tins, and 2 other boxes anonymously donated for extra prizes for the tourney. Anyone that wants to can add donations. We'll see what we have by fall!
God Bless
P.S. We've had a Faithful Servant promo, a complete set of Womens, a 2013 season pass to Kings Island, and a toolbox added as prizes.
P.S.S. If we get enough packs and there is interest then maybe we'll add super booster or something.
-
Dude, I have mondo packs. so I can donate if we fall short!
Really excited to participate in this coming season!
-
Ok, I updated the first post with the basic information for this year's tournament.
I've been trying to figure out how to best use the packs that have been donated for the prize pool. Would people prefer to use some of those for a booster draft, add extra to the sealed teams category, keep them as 1st-3rd prizes, or something else?
Should we do the basketball competition again? Any other ideas, requests or questions?
-
I am so there if humanly possible for me to get there. This is a great event and I look forward to taking part in it!
-
Ok, I updated the first post with the basic information for this year's tournament.
I noticed that you posted starting at 6pm. Can we move that back a couple hours to 8pm? For people who are traveling, it will be hard to get there by 6pm, and more people will be traveling to this tournament than most. And since there is free lodging at the church Fri night, people can just crash there afterwards so it doesn't really matter how late it goes, right?
I've been trying to figure out how to best use the packs that have been donated for the prize pool. Would people prefer to use some of those for a booster draft, add extra to the sealed teams category, keep them as 1st-3rd prizes, or something else?
It was really fun doing the amazing booster draft at Nats this year using all the packs possible except Warriors. I'd like to see using the donated stuff to make Booster as cool as possible first. Adding more to Sealed makes it less like Sealed and more like Booster, so I wouldn't recommend doing that. The people who win tournaments like this already have a ton of cards, so adding to the 1-3 prizes also seems unnecessary (although maybe adding a bit would be OK). Therefore I'd also do some significant door prizes or even a free pack or two to each person who attends.
Should we do the basketball competition again?
This was a really fun side event last year (as KY beat NC/OH, just like normal in college basketball) and would be fun to do again. I also could bring Shadows Over Camelot to play late Fri, since that was a big hit at Nats.
-
Hey galad, if you want to make a new topic so it looks a bit cleaner, I'll be happy to sticky it for you.
On another note, Josiah, I see you're interested in this. Where are you based right now? I'd be interested in mobilizing some PA/MD players.
-
I'm in circleville Ohio I'm about 2 hours away from the tournament location
-
I am in favor off adding more packs to the Sealed-Teams event since Booster-Draft wasn't part of the original offering. I like sealed events in general and everyone likes getting cards but perhaps adding the rest of the donated packs to the prize pool will help give more people from further away an incentive to go the extra mile...pun intended.
-
Travis I hear your point on booster my being apart of the original offering. however, I am with mark in this one and believe that a booster would be a great draw and would encourage extra players to come.
-
I am in favor off adding more packs to the Sealed-Teams event since Booster-Draft wasn't part of the original offering.
Oops, I just looked at the OP, and see that Travis is correct about there not really being a Booster Draft, but rather a Sealed TEAMS event. I was confused because in the post above Jon was asking about putting the prizes into a Booster event.
I continue to think that adding more than normal to a Sealed Deck event makes it feel less like Sealed Deck and more like Booster. However, what if we had a SUPER BOOSTER TEAMS event combined the two ideas. You would have 4 people at a table, with teammates sitting diagonally opposite from each other. Each player would be given 1 of the starter decks, and one of each pack that is available from the donated stuff. These packs would be passed around the table booster-style, and when it was all done, each player would create the best deck they could. Then they would play using TEAMS rules.
This seems like it could be a lot of fun. What do you guys think?
-
I personally don't like that idea. Sealed Teams is a lot of fun when it is done like Sealed. I think adding a draft element changes the event completely. I am all for adding more packs to the Sealed format but drafting would result in the same colors will be drafted by both teams. And the idea that the players build their decks separately changes the teams element as well. The teams building their decks together is half of what makes teams fun.
-
I agree with Travis that adding a draft element to Sealed TEAMS changes the event completely, it wouldn't be like Sealed at all anymore, and would be closer to Booster. But Travis is also right that it would be a weird booster because everyone would be going for the same brigades for the most part. Perhaps, it would be better to NOT add any of the donated packs and do a simple Sealed TEAMS event.
In which case, that just leaves more packs for door-prizes or even giving a pack or two to everyone who comes (to give a bit of compensation for their travel).
Speaking of people traveling, any word on pushing the start time back to 8pm?
-
Ok, to clarify the categories listed in the OP which are the same as last year are definite categories for this year. I know multiple people enjoyed sealed Teams and we didn't want to get rid of that.
I don't think that adding extra packs to Sealed would make it like Booster. One key difference is that you don't have to pick 1 of each expansion. There might be a different strategy if you get more total packs from a set; it might make Priests or Angel Wars more desirable because you'd have better odds of significant Teal or multiple Panic Demons, etc.
I was talking about doing Booster Draft but I meant the possibility of adding that as a 4th category. I was looking for feedback on what people would like. I agree that combining sealed and booster would make it a less fun category. However Booster Teams could be fun. Alternatively we could do something like Type Ban, Type 3, Type 12, or others.
It seems that currently Booster would be the leading choice and thats perfectly fine. I will just point out that our ability to do booster could be affected by how many people show up for the category. If we have 8 people then it will be no problem but if we get 40 people then we might need some more people to chip in to do that. Whether or not we'd have enough to also add to sealed teams and prizes would obviously depend on the same thing.
For the start time I'm certainly willing to consider the 8:00 time but I'm not sure yet. In the past there have been people who would like to participate but need to start and end earlier. If we add a 4th category then maybe we start one at 6:00 and the next category after latecomers show up. I'd personally prefer the official categories to not go until 3:00 A.M. so i'd like to start sooner.
-
Ok, to clarify the categories listed in the OP which are the same as last year are definite categories for this year.
If that's the case, then I think we should just go with those categories then. One of the nice things about the tournament last year was that everyone was always playing in the same events. If you added a 4th category, it would have to run at the same time as something else, splitting people up.
I don't think that adding extra packs to Sealed would make it like Booster...Alternatively we could do something like Type Ban, Type 3, Type 12, or others.
If we WERE going to do a 4th category, Booster is probably the best way to go (assuming there's not too many people for it). Since Sealed TEAMS is already an "unofficial" event, we probably don't want to have another "unofficial" event on top of that.
For the start time I'm certainly willing to consider the 8:00 time but I'm not sure yet. In the past there have been people who would like to participate but need to start and end earlier.
My guess is that there will be more people who can't get there by 6pm, than there will be people who need to end early for some reason. And starting at 8pm with a fast category like SEALED should NOT end up going to 3am anyway. I appreciate you considering this.
-
Agreed on all account gentlemen.
I believe that allocating the packs as door prizes for those making the trip will be our best option. As Mark alluded to, it will be a nice bonus for everyone who took the time and resources to be at the tournament.
-
If you added a 4th category, it would have to run at the same time as something else, splitting people up.
Yeah, I was not wanting to run them simultaneously. Which is why I was thinking about starting one at 6 and the second category on Fri after that and finish by 1 which would also explain why I was thinking that starting at 8 would mean the second category could run until 3.
There has been some interest in booster (or teams booster) already expressed but if the cons of trying to fit in the category outweigh the benefits then I'm fine with sticking to the original categories and probably a later start time.
-
but if the cons of trying to fit in the category outweigh the benefits then I'm fine with sticking to the original categories and probably a later start time.
I think this would be my preference as I would really like to try this Sealed TEAMS idea that you guys run up in OH, and if you started it early then I'd miss out again.
-
That would also be my preference. We could put some stuff up for silent (PM) auction as suggested by Gabe on your other thread JP.
-
Exciting news for TEAMS at the Redemption for Micah tournament. It looks like Brian Jones will be returning to the 2nd annual event after winning last year and coming in 5th place in TEAMS at Nats this past summer. He is currently available and looking for a partner, and hoping to repeat his victory from last year. If there are players who are interested in teaming up with Brian, please send me a PM and I'll communicate with him to work things out there.
On a personal note, I'm really looking forward to playing Sealed TEAMS with my daughter Katrina, so I'm just wanting to confirm that it'll be starting late enough in the evening for us to be able to get there :)
-

Sorry for the absence but it has just been a busy time for me and my family. I'll be there around 6 to help set up and it should be fine if anyone wants to join earlier but we are planning on waiting for your group to play Sealed Teams. When you suggested 8:00, did you mean that you would be ready to play at 8 or just arriving at 8?
For anyone showing up without a teammate, we will probably be able to pair some people up there and Teams will be the last category which should give them some time to work things out.
How many are coming with you, Mark? Anyone else want to confirm they are coming?
-

I think we should be ready to play by 8, as I suspect we'll arrive between 7-8. As for numbers, that is still a bit up in the air. We had 19 at our last local tournament here, and although I doubt seriously that all of them will make it, I think that we'll have a big group. My best guess at this point is that we'll have about 10 players coming.
I'll try to summarize chances of coming below:
99% - Myself and my 2 daughters (Alecia and Katrina)
80% - Andy Wills, Drew Wills, Brian Jones, Kayleb Matthews
70% - Ian Kratzer, Stevie Stedman, Caleb Stanley, Wyatt Marcum
60% - Tirzah, John, Biruk
40% - Jed, Hannah
30% - Kyle, Samuel, Hunter, Tabitha, Kyla
edit: Players in red ended up making it.

I really apologize for not being around more for updates but this has been a pretty busy time for me and my family. I am really looking forward to the weekend! I did update the OP with some info.
Also, is there anyone who could carpool/ pick up a guy from the Cedarville, OH area? He learned how to play at Creation Fest and when he came to our store last week for Yugioh, he saw our Redemption cards and that led to his interest in going to the tournament this weekend. His name is Max Schoch. If anyone can, then please give me a call to arrange that: 937-479-1421.
Mark, any chance we could do some playtesting when you are here?
-
I've now confirmed that I'll be bringing 11 players with me to the tournament. See you guys this evening :)
-
Awesome! Lord, please protect them for their journey.
See you soon.
-
It was a GREAT tournament! We were glad to bring our largest ever traveling group to this tournament, and everyone had a really good time. It is always a pleasure to get to reconnect with our OH Redemption friends, and this was no exception. So many of my players benefited from the generous prizes (of the host and sponsors), the trading (of uthminister), and the food (delicious) that we almost couldn't fit back into the van to return home to KY.
Sealed Teams:
None of us from KY had ever played this event before. However after giving it a try, I think it really might be the future of Sealed. It certainly was a LOT more fun that regular Sealed. I teamed up with my 7yr old daughter Katrina, and we had a good time working together. Each team started with the G+H decks and either 10 regular packs or 6 box packs. We thought about going with 6 disciples packs and hoping to supersize the purple offense of the starter deck, but ended up choosing to go with 10 priests packs hoping to add a complete teal offense to the mix.
Unfortunately we ended up getting absolutely nothing out of any of the 10 packs. No KoT, no PotW, no Phineas or Joshua or Zeal or Holy Unto the Lord or Lampstand or ANYTHING. We also got very few cards matching any of our brigades and none of them were good either. It was about the worst pull from packs that I've gotten ever, and others were pulling stuff like Falling Away, and double Captain of the Hosts. I was sure we would lose terribly in the event. Amazingly we won our first 2 games and ended up playing against Allen and Rebeccah Collins in the championship game. Considering that Rebeccah is a former National Champion in Sealed Deck, I knew we were in for a tough game.
At the end, both teams were tied with 4 LSs rescued each. My daughter has SoG in her hand, but our opponents did not have any LSs in their LoB. We had LSs available, but they couldn't seem to break through our defense. So it all came down to whether they drew a LS or their SoG first. As it turned out SoG showed up first and they won the game. We dropped to 3rd place overall in the standings, and really were still quite happy to have finished that highly.
Late night gaming:
The event finished after midnight, so my wife and kids went to bed. Meanwhile my teammate for TEAMS the next day and I got in a practice game to get a bit more ready. We had some significant problems, so I was glad to get them out of the way when it didn't count. After that the rest of us also went to sleep looking forward to the day ahead :)

T1-mp:
I was the defending champion of this event from last year, and hoped to be able to repeat this year. However I was using quite a different deck this year, and things didn't quite break my way. In my first round, I randomly was assigned to the table with only 3 players which ended up being the difference in the tournament. I rescued 4 LSs, but because there were only 3 players, there were no VPs for 2nd place. I won my second game, which let me slip into the championship table for the final round. My only way to win the tournament was to win that game and keep Brian Jones (the current leader with 2 wins) from getting any VPs at all.
It was clear early that stopping Brian wasn't going to happen as he played SoG+NJ to jump out to an early lead of 3-1-1-1 with GoYS protecting his lead. Soon it was 4-2-2-1 and Brian was guaranteed VPs of at least a shared 2nd place finish. So then I was playing for 2nd place, and then things got crazy....
The only LSs on the table were Brian's (heavily defended and including a fresh 3-liner) and a fresh 3-liner in Player 4's LoB as well as another fresh 3-liner in my territory. I felt good about that because I figured that no one would attack yet and that would mean that we had basically 2 automatic stops to use against Brian. But then Pequinot attacked me when I had no defense causing me to have to give him half of my 3-liner (one stop down the drain). At this point I felt like I had to also attack Player 4 to keep up and figured if I just took half of his 3-liner then there would be nothing left for Brian to attack at all.
Player 4 then did something very unexpected. He blocked me with TAS which created a LS in my LoB that would be difficult for me to defend against Brian. He then got out someone from his deck giving me initiative which I used to win the battle, unfortunately creating a LS in his LoB. Rather than give me that LS leaving the fresh 3-liner to use as a block on Brian, he instead chose to give me half the 3-liner despite having no defense left to block Brian (who was going next). When Brian came in he was about to give away the LS, and a discussion happened about how giving the game to someone was cheating. Thankfully, Pequinot had SoG+NJ and took away that LS as well as the 2nd half of my 3-liner he had rescued previously. Score 4-4-2-1.
Another time around the table saw Pequinot take half of Brian's 3-liner, and me take the 2nd half of Player 4's 3-liner, and Brian getting stopped again. Player 4 took a couple LSs from me during that time as well so that the score was 4-4-4-3. At that point Brian played Falling Away on Pequinot's rescued 3-liner effectively ending his chances to win, and I finally drew SoG to get the win.
Despite Brian and I both having 2 wins and a 4LS 2nd place finish in games, he ended up in 1st place (since my 2nd was in a 3-player game). I took 2nd place and Caleb Stanley took 3rd. I was pleased and proud that Oakdale took all 3 top spots in a tightly contested event like that.

TEAMS:
Last year, I teamed up with Brian Jones and went undefeated on the way to winning 1st. We continued to team up for large tournaments winning at State and Regional levels, and placing 5th at Nats. This year we decided to split up rather than try to defend our titles. I teamed up with another student named Kayleb Matthews and Brian teamed up with Travis Brown (uthminister). Brian and Travis went with a combination of a 154 behemoth deck in the hands of Travis (focusing on defense, but also able to make some nice attacks along the way) and a speedy small deck in the hands of Brian (focusing on offense). They won their first game and had timeout win in their second round.
Meanwhile, Kayleb and I went with 2 decks that were almost identical that benefited a lot from banding to each other's characters. Our first 2 rounds seemed to be a lot harder to get through as we were barely able to get timeout wins in both of them. But our draws seemed to really not work well as some key cards failed to show up both games. Wall of Protection didn't come out forcing us to fight through our own defense many times, which slowed us down considerably. We also lacked GoYS at a critical part of one game, and in another game we both had the same key card of our offense as the bottom card of our decks. We hoped the odds were in our favor for a better draw in the last round.
So after 2 rounds, we slid into the championship game, and there were actually 4 teams at the time who all had the chance to win the tournament depending on how things turned out. The championship against Brian/Travis was really fun. One of the key battles that I remember was coming in with Sam and getting blocked with KoT. I naturally played Sam's Edict to send him away, but Travis wasn't worried at all. He simply Gates'd until he had pulled out both a demon to block and a 3-liner LS, and then discarded Gates to add his new blocker. He would have had init, and I suspected Worshipping Demons to end the battle, so we played AotL on the demon, right after first playing Burial on that 3-liner. It was hard fought battle, but ended up with a LS for the good guys. A turn or two later, Kayleb drew SoG to go with his NJ, and we were able to win the game and the tournament.
Wyatt Marcum and Drew Wills ended up placing 2nd in TEAMS. Matt Archibald and Jonathan Pequinot placed 3rd.

Thanks so much to all of the people who came, participated and helped host and maintain the event. The event raised $392.25. I had a great time and even Micah had a great time for the brief moment he was able to come.
Thanks to all who participated!
