i have to admit i am a little disappointed . . . i have not been to a tournament before and was really looking forward to trying a booster draft.  However the sealed sounds like it may be interesting just not as interesting as a booster draft.

I'm sorry. MD states and PA states overlap with a lot of their participants and those who don't overlap are usually from Creation Fest, who are first-time players that would benefit from sealed deck.

Echo Marti's sentiment on this one.  If you want Booster, come on down to MD States, but I feel strongly that more Sealed should be played to encourage new players to join, we just don't have as much interest in these parts.  Happy she's running it :)

Unfortunately, I'm not able to attend the state tourney.  My wife will be veeeeeery pregnant since she's due at the end of July.  But I do have a question.  What is a sealed deck tournament?

But I do have a question.  What is a sealed deck tournament?

Sorry to hear you can't come down, but essentially on the second part:

You sit across from your opponent with 3 booster packs of your choice (sometimes limited based on what out-of-print stock is there) and each of you is randomly assigned a starter deck (either G or H, I don't think we'll be using E/F).  You use your starter decks and your booster cards to make a deck, and you can trade cards with the opponent you are paired with.  Then you have T1 duels in a Swiss tournament for the win! :)

maybe this is nuts but what about making an optional booster draft after sealed for a certain extended price this would give new players another chance to try a booster get more cards and gain more experience

There really isn't enough time to do it, unfortunately.  Three phases like this take all day, and there would not be the time to have another phase.

i understand that it would take all day but not everyone has to stay however judging from how many people on the forum and such at 2am im not sure that everyone would feel the need to bail after 2 phases it could be just an option . . . however if the host isnt interested in staying the question is mute lol

Last year we had 33 people at PA states, and we went until 8 or so. If I have anything over 20 people, there will be no time for it.

Could we not have an official booster draft go on in the afternoon for those who do not wish to play the multi player games? I know I have very little experience in multi player so I don't have a deck set up for it so I would be interested in playing booster draft with a few people even if it wasn't for prizes. Everyone could bring a set of cards for it and then we just shuffle them up and pick a random tin.

This hasn't been updated in a while. Bump for players to remember to request off work and save a spot on the calender for this tournament!

Well at this point I don't think any categories can be added as "Official Categories" due to the prize support likely already being sent out from Cactus.  As for adding an Unofficial Booster Draft I will leave that up to the Host's.

I don't think people will want to play booster "unofficially." The tournament is already going to take up a lot of time, and the majority of players in T1 will play multi just because its included in registration where as booster costs a little extra. But as previously said it's up to the hostess Marti.

I meant that as unofficial thanks for nabbing my mistake lol. Did not notice that at all until now.

So, I saw that EC regionals is the same day as PA states, and I know several of you were considering going down there because of NE regionals being so far away. I would like to start getting a head count soon, so I can start figuring out food and stuff.

Thanks guys!

Ok, I need to start getting an idea of who's playing Sealed to ensure that I have enough booster packs. I know I'll have enough decks, so let me know if you are interested in playing.

Bummer, I was hoping to have a few PA people come join us for the EC Regional that day (July 20th-21st).  However, I hope you all have a great time at PA states.  We'll just have to wait another month to see you guys at TN nats :)
