Title: Nats Pointers
Post by: Warrior_Monk on August 03, 2012, 01:20:31 AM
So I recently got a PM from a forum member asking about tips to succeed at nats. I thought it might be a good idea to make a post for anybody new going to nats (or other big tournaments, really), as well as see what you guys suggest. So here's the list I had:

Be sociable. Fellowship>Redemption, and getting out of your playgroup circle does wonders if you're looking for enjoyment. I personally suggest asking past opponents how they're doing in the tournament.

It's a lot of Redemption. Make sure to keep your mind sharp with enough sleep, food, water, and free time.

Shrug off your losses. They happen, and it can ultimately come back to hurt you in later games.

Shrug off your wins. Don't let anything go to your head. Take each game as it comes.

Don't be too uptight or you'll make mistakes. Don't be too loose or you'll make mistakes. Just play the game the way you normally play it.

Depending on the situation, generally don't take risks. Sure, they can pay off, but calculate the odds, because skipping over the safe play can lead to unwanted guilt.

Play a speed deck. Shorter round time means more free time in-between.  ;)

Tip:  Always, always, always, bring Rob a bag of peanut pretzel M&Ms (my new favorite) if you hope to have a questionable ruling land in your favor.

Rob, I will personally have each of my sons hand you a bag of pretzel M&Ms.   ;)

Seriously, thanks for the injection of humor & advice.  :)

1 - How to eat 3 meals a day for 3 days, all for $10:
     a. Bring a box of cereal that you like dry (frosted flakes or fruit loops are good).  Breakfast.
     b. Bring a loaf of bread, a jar of PB, and a jar of jelly.  Make 2 sandwiches each day for lunch.
     c. Go with friends to McD's for supper and order 3 things off the dollar menu for supper.
         i.  McDouble (x1 or x2) or McChicken (x1 or x2) for meat, bread, veggies
ii.  Fries for veggies, fat (high calorie intake)
iii.  Water to drink (use the money on food)

2 - How to have fun during tournaments:
     a.  Go in expecting to have fun games, but that you will NOT place in the top 3
     b.  Pray before you start each game that God's will be done
     c.  Play your games just like regular games you play at home
     d.  Have a good attitude regardless of game outcome
     e.  If there's time after the game, ask opponent for deck advice

3 - How to spend time during evenings:
     a.  Trade for cards with everyone
     b.  Play strategy games with everyone (I'll probably be bringing some)
     c.  Watch Angel Wars (that's where my kids will be)
     d.  Get to know the people who you've typed with here on the forum but never met
          i.  When you first meet them, let them know who your screen name is
ii.  Be gracious if they still can't quite remember who you are :)
     e.  Get some sleep (at least 4 hours).  Staying up all night sounds cool.  Until you do it.

4 - Things NOT to do:
     a.  Trade some little kid's AoCP or Daniel for your Shamgar because they don't know better
     b.  Tell everyone how awesome you are because you won a local and you're gonna dominate
     c.  Play a slow deck in T1-mp and even think you have a chance
     d.  Kiss anyone during the awards ceremony
     e.  Hang around after your game finishes and look at the decks of the people still playing

When Andrew Wester pulls a combo off on you don't get down because chances are it's gonna happen to someone and you might be the unfortunate one. Also have fun watching it unfold it's preetty epic.

If you are the last one to go undefeated don't assume you have the rest in the bag.

OR. . . you could eat dry cereal for breakfast, get a $5 lunch from me & then eat two sandwiches for dinner!  That should be right around the same price!   ;D

I disagree with all of these ;)

     a.  Trade some little kid's AoCP or Daniel for your Shamgar because they don't know better

I once traded a Scribe for a Mayhem. And he thought he was ripping me off.

     b.  Tell everyone how awesome you are because you won a local and you're gonna dominate

Dude! I'm awesome! I won a local! I'm gonna dominate!

     c.  Play a slow deck in T1-mp and even think you have a chance

I've decided that in T1MP my Garden Tomb deck is considered slow. I mean, have you seen some of the decks these days?

     d.  Kiss anyone during the awards ceremony

This is one of my favorite natz memories. :(

     e.  Hang around after your game finishes and look at the decks of the people still playing

How else do you expect me to win???

Just kidding :) These are all good points of advice :) Well, except for the kissing one. :P

Man, I'm a pro at McDonalds. Order a side salad and McChicken without mayo. Cut up your chicken patty, add it to the salad, and put some of your dressing on the bun (both their Italian and balsamic vinegar are surprisingly good. Sometimes they'll give you both if you ask, so you can use one flavor for the bun and one flavor for the salad. One packet is big enough for both the bun and salad, though.) Ghetto chicken salad for the win! And it's $2, compared to a normal crispy chicken salad which is like $5.

Another food related protip: If you go to Perkins, don't order a bowl of fruit. They charge you like $4+tip and it's pretty terrible. It's just honeydew, cantaloupe, and grapes. And the melons are awful. I learned that the hard way.

It's a lot of Redemption. Make sure to keep your mind sharp with enough sleep, food, water, and free time.
These are complete optional if you're just there for the fellowship because you don't have a chance of winning (like myself).  ;D

I agree on the 'Dont assume your Deck is automatically going to win or even place' because every time I think that going in, I'm disappointed when I leave. (I didn't think I was going to do well at Minnesota at all or the one Local I won before)

As for the kissing, why'd you have to spoil my fun?
(lol)

Just joking!

So what I'm getting from this thread is that there is going to be a lot of kissing at Natz. I should bring my guitar.

I won't be kissing anyone at Nats. If anyone kisses me, I'd probably roll with it. I know I'm irresistible. But, in the wise words of YMT, my wife is hot (to those who don't know, YMT referred to his wife, and I to mine--didn't want any confusion to surface) so she is the only one deserving of my kisses.

All I know is if anyone tries to kiss my wife she WILL smack them, and then I might have to punch you in the nose for good measure!   :D

Honestly all kidding aside we should do a worship set at some point for people who are interested, How He Loves by John Mark McMillan is an easy tab as is From the inside out.

Could be fun to have all the fellowship and to worship our creator as well.

I'd totally be down for a guitar-pull-style worship session. This actually sounds like a fantastic idea.

Sweet well I'll bring mine for sure, if Allen can fit it in his van. I am excited that we can spend sometime fulfilling our purpose in life, glorifying our God always brings on special moments. I love that he bends low to hear the praises of his people.

Sad day my guitar wouldn't fit :-/
