NC Region is due, Iowa or Minnesota, I have it from a very reliable source that Iowa will most likely put in a bid at the very least.

I can narrow it down a little further.  Nats won't be in:

Alaska
Hawaii
Washington
Oregon
California
Idaho
Nevada
Arizona
Montana
Utah
New Mexico
North Dakota
South Dakota
Wyoming
Colorado

Nope, keep in mind that the NC region continues to have one of the largest player bases, in addition to the fact that we have a long history of succesful national tournaments. NE does have a legitimate argument but Rob tries not to put it on the coasts two years in a row.

Didn't this Nats like have the lowest player turnout of any Nats since 2001? Lol, NC Regs got almost as many players this year. :P Just an interesting fact about West MN. ...

I would love to see Nats in East MN this year, as I probably always will. (It's just a little frustrating to me that the last time it was here was right before I got back into the game after a 6-month break. :P ::)) I would probably be able to make Iowa as well, which might even be kewler. 8)

I'd bet on Minnesota/Iowa in '10, and the NE in '11. And, why are we even talking about this?

Honestly if a Nats decision could be made as early as possible it helps us who know we have to travel prepare and save money.  There are some locations I would try and go to but others I probably wouldn't (distance from family).  I think it would actually be cool if we almost knew at one Nats where the next one would be.  Like announce it on the final day of Nats so everyone gets excited and ready for it.
Title: Re: Nationals

As a host of this year's Nationals, I thought I would help everyone understand the process a bit. Here's a summary of the things that have to happen to have Nationals somewhere.

1. Potential hosts have to consider whether they can get approval for a location that can adequately support the events to be held over three and a half days with the number of expected players.
2. The potential host has to consider the costs that will be involved and if they can get the help they need to run the tournament.
3. They have to put in a bid to Rob to host the tournament.
4. Rob has to select one of the bids placed by the various potential hosts.
5. The selected host has to confirm the dates and secure the tournament location for those dates.
6. Rob can announce the location of the National tournament.
7. The host has a LOT of work to do to get everything ready by the dates of the tournament.

So if you want Nationals 2010 to be held in (state your preference), talk to someone who can be the host in (state your preference) and get them to submit a credible bid to Rob to be the host of the 2010 National Tournament in (state your preference). Then offer them your help, then you can plead with Rob and pray that he'll pick that bid.

Best wishes to the potential 2010 hosts...

Mike

I think that something in the NC/NE region would be good. Not neccesarily dead in the center of either, but those are the two most prevalent regions. Honestly, Ohio wouldn't be a terrible choice, since it's kind've in the middle there. Michigan, Illinois, and anything in that general area would be good spots too. Not make either group go too much.

Would it be possible to "NOT" schedule the Nationals Tournament on the first weekend of August? Everything else is schedule that week...
My sister flies from CA to visit at Soulfest.org.  And my class reunions in Kansas are that same weekend. Which means that I am only able to go to Nationals once or 2x's every 5 years and even then I have to skip Soulfest (which is a big deal to me and means I miss it, and my sister each year I choose to go to Nationals Tournament)  Soulfest is a big deal in the Northeast, 13000 Christians gathering for 5 days in New Hampshire its been going on for 13 years.

I would respectfully ask that it be scheduled for the last weekend of July (forever).

Thank you.

Its not fair that some people must travel long distances and some must travel short distances to get to nationals. I devised a plan that should make everyone happy; hold Nats on Neptune! Then, everyone must travel roughly the same distance.

Although it may be a long flight, so make sure to stock up on Mountain Dew, Pringles, and bring your Ipod.

Perhaps we should put in for OHIO again this year.

Besides NY, Ohio has been my favorite Nationals place. Just the fact that the tournament was in the hotel. I liked being able to leave cards in my room, then go grab any if I need them. Not to mention not having to rent a car.

New York for Nats10! ONLY if the cheerleading competition is going on at the same time...   ::)

Otherwise, I would like to see it in Ohio at that same hotel. Or anywhere else really, as long as it is in a hotel, it makes it much easier on some of us.

As much as I would love for Nats to be here in KY, and as much as we do have the facilities to host it here at my school....alas we are probably too far away from airports for this to happen any time soon.  And since no one else in KY is hosting tourneys anymore, that probably knocks out our state.

Nats is usually three days of tournament, (usually Thursday through Sunday) with the night before (Wednesday) often used as a night for fellowship/games as people come.

Depending on where in the TC it would be, if we are lucky enough to host it, you would probably be able to find cheap lodging. I know my church (one of the most likely locations) has often allowed people to stay overnight in the building for big tournaments (we've hosted several regionals and states there) but it often depends.

That said, let's just work on getting Nats to MN next year first. Because 5 years is far too long...

The point was that traditional finalists made the cut, not the underdog teams that never make it. The Penguins and Red Wings both are long-time playoff teams. STAMP's point would have been disproven if the Coyotes had made it to the Stanley Cup.

I think having a high number of players attending is at least as big a deciding factor as having people who have never been before.

I'm not saying it was a bad idea to have nats in Cali necessarily, but...I mean, you have to balance fairness and attendance, IMO.

However, in the end, it really all comes down to what Rob says. I mean, you can't even have a tournament in a state where no one offers to host.

A while ago, some one mentioned that there should be a rotating schedule for Nationals.  It would look like:

East Coast
Central
Central
West Coast
Central
Central
East Coast

This was a great idea because it gives the places with a lot of people most of the nationals but it still gave us on the coasts a chance to go to a nationals once every six years.  So you would still get the uber numbers most of the time while also giving the coastal peeps (who can’t afford going across country) their shot at natz.

A while ago, some one mentioned that there should be a rotating schedule for Nationals.  It would look like:
East Coast
[North]Central
[South]Central
West Coast
This could be a good idea, except that there just isn't a solid enough player base to realistically make that work.  Sure the North Central region has been consistent for a decade and there would always be a big-time host in MN willing to host Nats every 4 years.  But the other regions just don't have that consistency.  If you asked a few years ago, it seemed like a Nats in TX and Atlanta were both good possibilities.  But both of those states have gone way down over the last couple years, as has the West Coast this year.  There probably aren't more than a handful of states that could realistically host Nats this year.  What if none of them were in the area that was on the schedule that you suggest above?

And don't even act like you don't want nationals to be in your state as well.
So you understand why some players who never get a chance to have nationals within 1500 miles of them would like to have a nationals they can attend?

The nationals in CA was the only nationals ever to take place on the West of the rocky mountains.  After 14 years of being on the east half, it was time for the West to get its chance.

Now we'll have it back on the East half for the next 14 years.  :(

Or, what about this: every player who goes to nationals puts their travel expenses on the host's credit card.  Then, the host divides that total by the number of entrants to determine the entry fee.  That way, it is fair for everyone.  :)

You local kids will have to foot the bill for the Hakes, Wolfes, Kramers, Isildurs, fireninjas, Ironicas, STAMPs, Arps, and all the high schoolers and middle schoolers in our playgroups, etc. for the next 14 years.  :)

All this will do is drive the local RLK's away, making Nationals a very eletist tournament and increasing fee's for you since the number of entrants will be significantly lower.
Title: Re: Nationals
Post by: Bryon on January 29, 2010, 08:02:23 PM
Driving RLK's away?  Not having Nationals west of the Rockies for 14 years drove RLK's away in the western US.  They'd look longingly at National promos, and stories of nationals, knowing full well they'd never get there, frustrated that they had to spend $40 for a AoC promo and $50 for a Priests of Christ, while a Minnesota RLK has 3 free copies.  In the years since 1998-9 when I started hosting tournaments, it wasn't like I could tell them, "In a year or two, we'll have nationals here!"  Well, thankfully, Rob and a significant number of members in the Redemption community knew it was only fair that the CA RLKs get a shot.  I hope that we get another shot in 6-7 years or so (7 or 8 years after our previous nats), but it will require selflessness again on the part of numbers worshipers.

Absolutely. I am one of them myself. But ...
... you have to balance fairness and attendance, IMO.
If that means nationals will be held in California for three years in a row, then I'm up for it ... but I truly doubt that's the case.

Honestly, I'm expecting this year's nats to be in a state where it's never been before, and also expect it to be somewhere near the east coast. But I doubt any other state can match Minnesota's attendance. And that should factor in to Rob's decision. That's all I'm trying to say. I mean no disrespect to anyone and perhaps I was foolish to expect the same.

I was simply stating that your solution (Which I think was in jest) wouldn't be the best idea. I have no problem with having nationals in California every 6 years. I probably wouldn't even have a problem with it every 3 years on the west coast.

Additonally AoC promo and Priests of Christ are great cards yes, but they're not completely neccessary for a really good deck - Neither deck that won T1 or T2 this year had AoC, Tim's deck in 08 didn't have AoC. I find it hard to belive that the lack of a card could drive someone away.

I'd love for it to be in WI or MN next year (or even this year), but that is kinda selfish of me, since my wife has family in WI so we can piggyback a trip.  I do hope that players in an area that have not had it recently get to have it.  It would be great for Atlanta or Florida or that area to get it.

I am very appreciative that players gave CA a chance, and I'd love for others to get a first chance.

Oh, and I was totally kidding about splitting the travel expenses.  :)

I mean no disrespect to anyone and perhaps I was foolish to expect the same.

I find it humorous that you contradict yourself within the same sentence.

Romans 12:10 says that we should "give preference to one another in honor." There was nothing honorable about the debate to even have Nats in CA, and all the whining about attendance numbers compared to MN continues to lack honor. We should have given preference to the West Coast long before last year, and hopefully again sooner than the present interval would dictate.

Leave CA alone and let the debate for where the next Nats will be focus on who we should give preference to this time, in honor. If you have something to say to the West Coast, how about congratulating them on a successful tournament (which is not determined by the numbers, but by the fellowship).

My numbers worshipers comment was in jest. I apologize for the lack of smiley face.  :)

I do not accuse anyone here of being an actual worshipper of numbers.  (Even excepting YourMathTeacher and myself, who are, in a way, Number Missionaries).  :)

I look forward to seeing you all at Nats this year, wherever that turns out to be.

I can handle this one. By saying you were "foolish" or even saying you might of been to expect people not to disrespect you is disrespecting them. Make sense?

Yeah, I agree. It seems like just a year ago we had some guy actually arguing that Nationals should be in California because the Southwestern Regional had the largest number of participants in 2008. I wish I could recall the name of that numbers worshiper. ;)

LOL.  Actually, that was ONLY in response to people who said that numbers should be a factor.  My main argument was fairness - let the western half of the country have 1 nationals after the other side had 14.  Clearly, we had enough numbers to have a successful (though somewhat diminutive) event.  :)

I only wish that the core of players I had in 1999-2000 could have been around long enough to attend nationals in CA.  That group was amazing.  I was only average compared to them in those years, and yet I won at nats twice in a row.  Some of them would have likely placed in the top 3 in type 1 as well.  The Arriaga brothers were amazing.  I think they both finished high in rankngs in those years.  Jorge Bugarin was super gifted strategically.  Adam and Adam, Abraham, Isaac*, Big Kenny and Little Kenny, Yuen, Sear, Frank ... Good times.  (Isaac is known for placing second out of 5 at a multiplayer table with the first ever heroless deck, circa 1999.  Apparently the heroless part was accidental...).  The Arriagas and Yuen moved away, the rest went off to college or work.  A later group was also quite good.  Andy Siew dominated here for a lot of years.  He was beating Chris Bany (who visited our Regional event) 6-0 in Type 2, 2-player, but made the mistake of blocking against Chris' devastaor deck (back when it was legal).  Andy watched Chris take a 30 minute turn, get his entire hand AND deck get discarded, and lost 7-6.  If he'd given Chris that soul without blocking, Andy would have won 7-1.   Andy's brother Kenny was also very good, and Anant and Christian were great, too.  They come by to visit tournaments now and again, but their hardcore days have passed.  My group of players now is good, but nowhere near the top calibre of those groups of guys.  When a decade goes by without a nationals within 1500 miles, it keeps certain groups of top players from getting the chance to go to a nats.  Thankfully, during that period, Rob visited us during a Regional event.  That was super great of him.  :)  But when you go to a nats, and meet ALL the great people, it inspires you in a way nothing else can.  I wish they'd had that chance.

I have greatly enjoyed every national tournament I've attended, but my favorite was 2009 because I got to share it with many of my local players.  I hope YourMathTeacher and anyone else who has not experienced that get a chance to do the same.  I do hope that Minnesota gets another chance before too long (2011 would be SUPER!), because I don't want a group there to come and go without getting the chance to have a nats.  But I also hope that new states are given special consideration.  There is simply nothing like a national tournament, and experiencing it with your local playgroup (and have them meet super great guys like Roy and Rob and the rest of the hardcore out-of-staters who love this game) is super special.  Man, I miss nationals.  :(

Agreed. If people are going to point to attendance it is only fair to note that Cali was granted the golden opportunity of hosting Nationals during the worst economic downturn since the 1930s when most of the major tournaments saw attendance hits last year. When you couple this with the fact that the amount of airline discounting was down quite a bit last summer (at least on the MN to CA flights) the event would have--in all likelihood--been considerably less diminutive under more nearly normal circumstances.

I'm not calling anyone disrespectful. I also never claimed that I deserved any respect in the first place. I'm just doubting whether someone who claims that I am "whining" shows any respect to me, which I think is a valid doubt.

I honestly think that there should be some sort of rotation between regions, only because that would be most fair. Then, these 20-some page long "discussions" (read: arguments why such-and-such region should have it on a such-and-such year) would cease to be so problematic.

If we instituted a rotation between the regions, but no one in such-and-such a region wanted to host that year, then it would automatically go to the next region.

I don't know, maybe I'm being too optimistic. But that's my :2cents:

:2cents: Make it 6!

I'm not sure about a rotation, but an official division into "regions" would work well IMO.  If an official tally was kept on how long a specific "region" had gone without Nats, it might help on making things more balanced (and allow the West to have Nats every 4 years or so.)

I never really thought "before you were born" arguments held any water. You're older than them, so of course you've been doing things for longer, but that in and of itself doesn't make you more of an expert than someone younger. For all you know, they could have gone to college for it and gotten a PhD in "Analysis and Digestion of SPAM" in which case I'd take their scientific reasoning over your opinion any day. ;)
