Cactus Game Design Message Boards

First off, I want to thank Shaun, Marti, and Brad for hosting and organizing. You did a great job. I played in T2 Multi and both T1 events at the tournament. The winners for categories I did NOT play in are as follows:

T2 2P: Jonathan Greeson

Teams: Sam Nurge/John Michalisyn(sp?)

Game 1: Jonathan Greeson/Brad Coverdale
This category had only 6 participants (Ginger Dimaggio, Matt Sinclair [with a double starter deck with some adds built on the spot so we didnt have to play a 5 player multi game] and Al Bauer also played). As fate would have it, the three players I expected to be able to win all played together first game. Jon and Brad were playing identical offenses, while Brad and I were playing similar defenses. This made for an extremely boring game full of identical plays. It would become a race to Son of God, which Jon won.

Game 2: Ginger Dimaggio/Brad Coverdale
I knew Brad's deck going in, and was able to manipulate my attacks against him accordingly. Ginger is an old veteran who hadn't played since Priests, so with Brad and I's new TEXP/DISC, we sliced through her for the most part. Luckily, my defense was a little better than Brad's, and I won this table, which vaulted me into second when Jon won his table to finish with 6 points.

After little sleep, the big one was coming. I was playing a 70 card Watchful Servant super defense turtle, which following the tournament, has been retired. A deck list will follow. I was attempting to prove that big decks and Watchful servant are in fact competitive and viable. The field was a large 36 person battle.

Game 1: Jon Masters
I had no idea who Jon Masters was, and, with my super defense, I was concered about timing out from the get go. I was forced to play an incredibly quick paced game (throughout the tournament, I probably averaged about 20 seconds to take my turn, perhaps even less). Jon was using the unexpected deck discard deck. In true random deck discard fashion, after using Angel of the Harvest twice without hitting anything worth mentioning, his deck discard soul hit my Son of God. Coupled with a relative bad defensive draw against his silver offense, I figured that the deck was going to go up in flames before it even started. As fate would have it, he managed to get to 4, and then his banding based offense floundered against the super band of Wandering Spirit to Spirit of Temptation to High Priest Annas and I permastalled him, leaving me just enough time to walk in for 5 souls and win the game with 2 minutes to spare.
Score 5-4 Best Hero in the Game
Ranking: 3 points, + 1

Game 2: Gretel Coverdale
It was a good thing this game was against a nice person like Gretel, because it was a nightmare. On the first turn of the game, Gretel played 3 sites that showed a sitelock defense, which made me realize that I may not have site access (I mean seriously, how many sites was I expecting other than the NT sites that I had in my deck as well). To make matters worse, she deck discarded my Watchful Servant with the deck discard soul. Luckily, her disciples offense wasn't getting through my defense anytime soon, so we got to the end of the game in a 2-2 deadlock. With 5 minutes left, I knew I needed to do something to try to get the win, so, rather than settle for the tie, I RA'd with Lampstand, Chariot of Fire, and Gabriel (instead of the normal Ahimaaz) and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, the best involved her block, using desecrate the temple to discard Lampstand, and then playing Falling Away to get the win 2-1 when I never drew Watchful Servant before the game ended.

Game 3: Alex
Alex was Korunks' little brother. He was probably around age 10, playing with a fairly strong Disciples and Herods deck, unfortunately between my expirience playing the game and my absurd defense, his offense never had a chance. He had good game instincts, but there is nothing disciples can do without Bart against a Salome + Herod + Dungeon combo. He will be a good player in the future, but this just wasn't a good matchup for him.
Score: 5-2 Watchful Servant
Ranking: 7 point, + 3

There isn't much to say about my deck here. It was standard speed bumped to 56 cards to add a small defense/more drawing.

Game 1: Rochester, NY guy, Alex (from T1), Rachel Dimmagio
This was the most anticlimatic game in the history of the earth. I drew 2 lost souls to go first. My hand was as follows: Hero x3, Artifact x2, Evil Character x1, Burial, Mayhem. Needless to say, the +7 card swing on the first turn of the game was amazing. Oh, did I mentioned that Mayhem gave me Hur and next draw I got gifts? Yeah, it was just wrong on all levels, and I slaughtered.
Score 5-2-2-0

Game 2: Ginger Dimmagio, Shawn Capron, Daniel Melee
In some hand of God expirience, Ginger got out of a table with Jonathon Greeson and Sam Nurge as the winner with a modified E/F deck. Unfortunately, she would not get off easy in this game. She was picked on to no end and couldn't block most of the time. I had the game won, sitting with two souls, New Jerusalem in hand, with Feast of Trumpets set aside and Gifts active when Daniel, for reasons unknown to me (he made it obvious it wasn't a strategic move due to my set up based on the way he played it) played ANB and gave the game to Shawn via the virtue of being to the left of Ginger. I was able to tie for second.
Score 5-3-3-1

Game 3: Dad Dimmagio, Jonathan Greeson, Chris Ericson
In the absolute epic that is Type 1 multi, this will be a game that will forever live in my lore. Dad Dimmaggio was new at the game, and because of that, there was an unspoken arrangement at the table to coach him without table talking so that we didn't have a miserable multiplayers experience. As it turned out, Chris probably did anyway. After tense negotiations on who to give souls to when, Jon and I were both at 3 souls without the big 2 being played and Chris was at 2. Jon and I both had Guardians, which had forced Dad Dimmaggio to play his Falling Away against Chris, or else he too would be at 3. Through various reveals, I had learned both Chris, Jon, and Myself had one component of the big 2 in hand.I set up the Gifts + Feast of Trumpets combo with 20 cards in my deck. Jon, seeing the win in my hand, set up his Rain Becomes Dust, which I immediately Destructioned. Dad Dimmagio then was faced with having to RA to try to win a soul, but only had a Hur, and had to avoid my Gifts from helping me. He decided to RA against me to prevent me from getting more cards. I kept New Jersualem but did not get Son of God. However, I did get a Revealer, which revealed Jon's NJ and Chris' SoG. I also got Falling Away, which I immediately played on Chris. Jon used Son of God the soul immediately in order to make me give Dimmaggio the 3line and lock Chris from it since Jon's NJ was gone anyway. I blocked with Sabbath Breaker, still did not get Son of God, and then buried the 3liner and died. Chris next draw brought new pain to the reveal and falling away combo from last turn; he drew both Guardian AND Lampstand. Without any souls to rescue due to Jon's site, he passed to me, and I drew Son of God in my first 3 cards, and won the game.

Apathy is right.  He definitely activated the Lampstand because I was hoping for a miracle with either DoN or Mayhem during the Feast Draws to keep you from SoG and Lampstand shut down that hope. This was a rough multi, and I tried hard to be patient...aka see my sig.  Oh and....

Apathy is right.  He definitely activated the Lampstand because I was hoping for a miracle with either DoN or Mayhem during the Feast Draws to keep you from SoG and Lampstand shut down that hope. This was a rough multi, and I tried hard to be patient...aka see my sig.  Oh and....

I'd honestly consider that game to be in my top three highlights of the weekend (among placing third in Teams [and pulling The Sabbath from one of the Priests packs!] and my games with Matt Stupenski and Sam Nurge in T1-2P). I think you and I both got really frustrated during that last turn, considering the circumstances. Just so you know, I didn't put the Lampstand up to be spiteful or as a casual decision. I did it to avoid a possible Burial, though I didn't realize that he'd used Feast. I just thought it was Pentecost or something. It's a roundabout way of saying it, but my point is that it was a pleasure playing with you.

I was actually making a pun on your username, since I figured you would shrug off yourself as a big hitter, but after your win, you probably should be considered as such.

Oh, I understand.  Each person has to do what they've go to do.  When I say "rough multi,"  I mean generally speaking...not that particular game.  For instance, in the first game...had my SoG not been in the bottom 8 cards of my deck, then I would have won it.   Same goes for our third game with NJ being buried or if the shuffler had not been rescued and so on and so on.  I struggle with the elements that are out of my control.  At least in 2 Player, I can have some semblance of control.  It's behind me and I'm not sweating it....you played well considering the bad breaks that you had to face.  Until we face each other again, have fun gaming.
