Comments: We had 2 former Nationals Champions show up to play (Gabe Isbell and Ron Sias). It was a real treat for all the young kids to see these two quality stand-up guys as they play and interact with other people.

Mark Underwood continued the Regional Dominance he displayed at the EC Regionals with 4 placings (2 1sts and 2 3rd's Here in the Midwest Regionals.

Teams was a categroy that was real interesting. The top three teams were unbeaten. The second and third place teams taking time out losses to Mark and ROb adn third pace being decided by differential. Lots of unique strategies and great decks!

I was plesantly surprised at my type 1-2 player performance having been one LS out of placing but instead I lost to the eventual champion in Clint Marshall who had to beat his son (for the first time ever) to win it. Great display by those two!

Iron Man was won by Jonathan Greeson who collected 5 LS and did not lose a single "Bobba Fett" to anyone else.

Rob Mulye swept the closed deck coategory defeating all comers with no one else going better than .500. It was a dominant performance!

Tom Kantner and Rick Stephenson's Performance was great! they showed up just for teams but our Schumers recruits did a fantastic job placing second!

I would like to extend my appreciation to all who came. I loved hangign out with all of you and getting to know all of you. You helped me hone my tournament hosting skills so that next time I will be even better. I hope tyo see you all someday soon! It truly was my pleasure to share that time with you all. God Bless!

About middle of the pack if I remember right. You would have to ask him for specifics because I never played him in type 1- 2 player.

We played 6 rounds of type 1-2 player. We had 20 or so people playing.

Well I will say that my eight plus hour trip was well worth it!

I think the four sealed games I won were some of the best game play I have ever had. I had some very challenging games and must say that it was great to see everyone, meet some people in person for the first time and enjoy the great fellowship.

Teams was a lot of fun too! Never thought I would come away with two first places at my third ever regionals.

That seems to be the way to go. I lost in the 5th round by a score of 5-4 and won in the final round, and only managed 3rd. Ironically, if I had squeezed past Nic...he thinks I could have bested his dad. What say you Alex since you saw both of our decks?

Thanks for a great tournament, crustpope. It was a blessing to put some faces with many of the names on the message boards. I look forward to seeing everyone in future tourneys. A lot of firsts for me. First regional, first Type 2 play in a tourney, first Haman's Plot ripped against me, first time playing Redemption until 4am. Thanks for all the fun and fellowship, everyone!

Thanks, crustpope, for putting on a great tournament. I really enjoyed meeting so many people from the boards that I hadn't seen face to face before. It was also very refreshing to see so many old friends again.

You probably would have won. I'm surprised Nic didn't. My deck only gave up 4 because of an absolutely horrible draw combination (he got a first turn Gabriel, I got all defense).

Prof's MW Regional Tourney Report (part 1)
I was planning on bringing a big group up to this tourney, but it turned out that our school took our students on a canoe trip this past weekend, so they weren’t available. So it ended up just being myself and a couple of guys who are sons of my fellow staff members. Drew has been to a lot of tourneys with me before, but it was Ian’s first time. We had a lot of fun on the way up singing along with the radio and talking about anything and everything. They had a great time getting to meet many of the best players in Redemption's history (Ron Sias, Gabe Isbell, Kirk Dennison, etc.), getting to play guys like Travis Brown who are always fun, and making a lot of trades (as well as getting some gifts) which made their decks a TON better.

Fri night was all T2, which my guys don’t play at all, and I don’t normally. However, it wasn’t paired up against anything else, and I didn’t feel like sitting around without anything to do for a few hours, so I decided to play. I wasn’t expecting any success with T2 experts like Kirk Dennison, Gabe Isbell, Jon Greeson, Jonathan Pequinot, and Matt Archibald. Then I started off with the first round bye. This would normally be a downside due to losing out on differential. However, I just appreciated having the 3 victory points

2nd round I was able to get a big win (7-1) which helped out with the differential anyway. 3rd round I had to play Jon Greeson, and he destroyed me (1-7) to advance to the championship game against Gabe. Meanwhile I had to play Kirk “Consistent Top 10 at Nats in T2” Dennison in the final round. I started the game by saying it would take a miracle for me to beat him, and a miracle is exactly what happened. He was playing a combo deck (that had worked fast every other game), but against me it drew AMAZINGLY badly. He got the critical card that he needed on the first turn, but a play of mine stopped that. He let me walk in a bunch of times for LSs while he waited for the combo cards to resurface. In one turn he drew 21 cards (3 normal + Divination x3) and still couldn’t get it. Then when it finally came out I was able to make 1 more play that messed it up again for just long enough for me to get to 7 LSs. I was totally blessed, and as a result ended up placing 3rd.

Sat morning was T1-2p (which I normally play, but had already won 2nd at EC Regionals), so I joined the small number of people playing Sealed Deck. I had an absolutely terrible deck at EC Regionals in this event, and didn’t even have 50 cards worthy of playing. This time was different. I actually had to cut out a few cards to get down to 56. One of the best additions was a PG defense of TG3, Rab, and King “First Strike” Sennacarib with 2KH, the 9/3 WC spear, and a choose the rescuer EE. Unfortunately I suffered from LS droughts of my opponents and only ended up winning 2 of 4 games. However, it was good enough to end up with another 3rd place finish. The critical game was against Rob Mulye who ended up running away with 1st place after going through undefeated. We were both tied at 4 LSs, and he had 1 LS out, but in a site. He had 1 more LS left in his final 4 cards to draw. I had Locust from the Pit (who would destroy his site) still left to draw, and an offense that he couldn’t stop. But I didn’t draw Locust (since it was my bottom card), and he didn’t draw his LS (since it was his bottom card), so I never got the chance to go for the win. He broke through my defense instead and won 5-4. It was a super game, and made the difference between me finishing 1st or 3rd. It was also his best showing ever in a Regional event, so I was proud of my fellow (former) Kentuckian

Prof's MW Regional Tourney Report (part 2)
Sat afternoon was T1-mp (which I normally play, but had already won at EC Regionals), so I joined the other 11 guys playing Booster. I really haven’t played much Booster over the years (4 games in 4 years of tourneys), but I do enjoy the event despite extremely poor showings my first 2 tries. My 3rd try had turned out amazingly well (tied for 1st at EC Regional), so I figured I was unlikely to do as well this time. The draft started off terribly. None of the packs that I opened had anything worth mentioning in them, and none of the cards passed to me were worth mentioning either. I later found out that another player at my table had the exact same tin as me, so we messed up each other’s draft. However, when we got to the TexP pack, it all turned around. I opened up a Mayhem and was passed a Stalks of Flax, and Moses and the Elders(after I’d drafted some white stuff). Still my offense was split many ways, with very few ways to win battles. I had 1 purple guy with Unified Kingdom only. I had a few angels with only Striking Herod as a battle winner. I had a few gold guys with only A New Creation as a battle winner. I had a few green guys with no battle winners. My defense was pretty much solid gold, but really was only strong against NT heroes (with Emp Claudius & 2 copies of a capture an NT EC card). So it was a pretty poor deck really overall.

The first round, I benefited from the player across from me drawing a big target on himself. First of all, he had an awesome draft (3 URs before we even got to the TexP pack). Secondly, he started the game by putting a Broken Cisterns in the territory of the best player (Soul Seeker). Thirdly, about halfway through the game he wiped out everyone in the games defense with an Authority of Christ. Needless to say his game was going well and he got off to a quick start. This drew attention away from me, and cleared the way for me to make some walkins (partly to keep LSs off the table so he couldn’t take them all. Pretty soon, he and I were both at 4 LSs and defenses had come back a bit. I was pretty desperate so I attacked with a big angel (9/7) with only Striking Herod to back him up. Soul Seeker had a choice of blockers with a small human (to get init) and a big demon (10/11 or so). I was hoping he’d pick the human, play something, and then I’d interrupt and discard him. However he picked the demon. I played Striking Herod anyway for the numbers (7/0), but I knew that he had some stuff in his hand to back him up. So I played my Mayhem and hoped that he wouldn’t draw EEs of the right color in his 6 cards. Amazingly it paid off, and I was able to win the battle and the game.

The second round, I was playing with Kirk (who had tied with me at EC Regionals), Alex_Olijar, and Al from NY. We all started off pretty generous with LSs and were quickly tied at 2 each. I was able to get #3 off Alex after his defense was depleted by Kirk and Al’s artifact prevented EC banding. Later I went for #4 off Al (who had let Kirk walk-in for #4), but he blocked me and tried to discard my face-down artifact (Stalks of Flax). I didn’t really think that art would be important, but I did want to win the battle so I played the white GE that makes it BTN, and had enough to get #4. At that point, the only LSs available were either mine or were locked up in sites. Al attacked me on a bluff, and was beaten by Emp Claudius. Kirk passed. Alex passed. When it got to be my turn again I realized that I drew some LSs (which I knew I couldn’t defend if Kirk attacked me. So I was desperate once again. I activated Stalks of Flax and traded heroes with Alex to get a blue Thomas (7/7) so that I could get at his LS in a blue site. He had defenders down, and one of them had 7 defense so all he needed in hand was 1 point of defense considering I had nothing to back up Thomas. However, his hand was all full of good cards, and so I was able to get in for the win again. I hope that it is clear that in both games I was completely blessed to be able to win as they easily could have gone the other way.

Prof's MW Regional Tourney Report (part 3)
Sat evening was TEAMS. Rob Mulye had asked on the boards if anyone needed a teammate, and I thought it would be fun to work together since Rob and I had enjoyed playing games against each other at several tourneys in KY back when he had lived there. So we spent just a bit of time the night before talking strategy and tweaking a couple decks that I had brought. The basic idea was that he was playing almost all defense with a Philly/site lockout deck. I was playing almost all offense with a rainbow speed deck. Rob worked the defense awesomely as I don’t think anyone ever rescued a LS from us.

Our first game was against Matt Archibald/Jonathan Pequinot (who had come in 1st at OH states). I had about the worst draw ever and so my offense took forever to come out. However, since they were shut down by our sites, it didn’t really hurt us. In fact, it ended up meaning that they had to put down all their ECs due to hand-clog, which got us our first LS when I attacked with ET+AoCP. We got our second LS when I attacked with a Captain band and they blocked low planning on playing Haman’s Plot. However, they didn’t redraw that HP after I played Mayhem, and so I was able to win that battle. I got 2 more LSs with SoG/NJ, but we ran out of time before we could get to 5.

The second game was against Ron Sias/Allen Collins. I had never played with Ron before, and I was really looking forward to it, and Allen has been a friend for years. However, I went into the game really tense. Allen is still learning some of the nuances of the game and so he regularly has to read cards a few times and isn’t very confident in his decisions. This leads to a lot of timeouts in TEAM games. It had dropped my team from 2nd to 3rd at OH States, and after timing out in the 1st round, we couldn’t afford to do it again. So from the beginning of the game I was pushing him pretty hard to keep moving. This led to frustration on both sides and made the game a lot more tense than they usually are (or than I like). In the end, we did finish the game (5-0) shortly before time ran out, but I felt kinda bad about it. The one good thing was that Allen learned a very important rule about sites, and I hope that will help him in future games.

The last game was for the championship against Rick Stephenson/Tom Kantner. They were undefeated going into the game as well, and we found out why. They had an AMAZING defense of demons. One had a 100 card deck with 2 GoH and 2 copies of everything. The other had a normal size deck with all the dominants (to get them faster) but with all the good demon stuff as well. I actually got a pretty good draw on offense and made a bunch of rescue attempts, but couldn’t ever get through, although I did force them to discard 1 of their GoH to bring in more help to stop me at one point. There was another battle where I thought for sure I would get a LS. The defender played Death of Unrighteous to get rid of all their LSs, but I played HT to pull one back out. However, then came Christian Martyr and it was all for naught. They also had some close tries to taking a LS, but Rob was always able to barely hold them off. By the end of the game, I was almost all the way through my deck with SoG in hand, but no NJ. I had guys set aside with Pentacost, and was hoping for one more turn so that I could get at least 1 more try for a LS and play my SoG/NJ combo. However time ran out and I had to play SoG alone for our only rescued LS for the game. Amazingly they didn’t even have SoG, and therefore we got the timeout win 1-0. It was just an awesome game that was a lot of fun for both TEAMS and which we were blessed to win.

I want to go ont he record and say I do NOT like the rule that I cannot use my partners acess site for access to my opponents LS sites. Hand clog was so bad that if I had had acess, the score would have been much different...but that is why we play the game.

Also, that mayhem put us in 3rd place due to LS differential. If I had played SOG/NJ before you played mayhem, Differential would have given us the advantage over rick and tom.

I do agree though that those games were fantastic (except for the speed of the game..that could use a little work...)
