lol I forgot about the burial too. Yeah, that was a pretty devious way to balance a huge momentum swing there. but if we had let you take advantage of all those cards we would have been bored for the next half hour instead of timing out in the end....so I was just looking out for everyone to make sure they got their moneys worth of redemption playing.

Also, I have been impressed with the quality of play by rebecca and allen, especcially allen. He has gotten a lot better playing quickly...but I though it was poetic justice that he had to play your daughter a couple of times...

It is good to hear that two of my former proteges are continuing to compete and doing well. I miss being a part of tournaments with you guys.

I totally agree that Allen and Rebecca have really become great players over the last several years. In their 4 events they placed 3rd & 4th (T1-2p & T1-mp), 4th (TEAMS), and 5th & 6th (Booster). Considering there were so many players, I'm impressed with them consistently being at the top like that.

As for my daughter, my favorite story of the tournament was when Allen told me about her sitting on his LS. Where do kids come up with ideas like that? That was just crazy! I appreciate everyone's patience with her as she begins to learn not only the rules of the game, but also some of the unwritten rules of etiquette for playing a strategy game

Well, here I am still in Ohio while yall are down there haveing a great time playing Redemption. My birthday was yesterday so I spent lots of time doing yard work including cutting up two trees. After an extra large KY State tournament this year, I had some high expectations for EC Regional. There were 6-10 people talking about coming up from TN/GA including some really tough players. There were also a handful of people talking about coming down from OH including some really tough players. And you never know whether a few more people might just show up unexpectedly. But for a variety of very legitimate reasons, none of these travelers ended up making it. So EC Regionals ended up being pretty small. We still had a good time though, and I'll summarize things below.

We started off with TEAMS:
Kayleb / Isaiah had teamed up at MW Regionals without much success, but they decided to stick together and give it another try. It turned out to be a good move as they went undefeated and took first place. Drew / Ian (another pairing from MWRegs) also had a lot more success by finishing 2nd. Meanwhile Andy / myself struggled mightily as we came in pretty unprepared and felt good to be finishing 3rd. I was proud of my daughter Alecia and her teammate Brian as they came in 4th.

Next we played Booster:
It was one of the worst drafts that I’ve had. I was excited to pull a Prince of this World from my Priests pack, but that was about it. My only other card of monetary value was Glory of the Lord (and who wants that), my only other card of play value in Booster was Asahel (from the TxP pack), and my offense was spread over about 5 brigades. Needless to say, I didn’t have high hopes, but it turned out that no one else had a very good draft either. I ended up winning both games and the tournament. Ian Kratzer came in 2nd and the father and son of Andy and Drew Wills tied for 3rd.

After a decent amount of sleep and some breakfast, we got started with T1-mp. The 1st round was won by Brian Jones, with several of us tied for 2nd place in a 5 person game. The 2nd round was won by myself, and Drew finished in 2nd place alone (after playing Falling Away on my daughter Alecia right at the end to knock her out of the tie for 2nd). So that made the placement: myself in 1st, Brian in 2nd, and Drew in 3rd.

And now for the rest of the story...

The next event was T1-2p. I decided to try once more with the herolite, defensive-heavy 63 card deck, and played it every round. It had taken me to 3rd place at the MW Regionals with some stiff competition there and had never lost a game. After playing it some more, I felt like I was getting faster, and would therefore have less timeouts, and perhaps have a shot at winning it all.

My first round I drew the bye, which was not at all a good way to start. My differential isn’t normally high anyway, so getting a diff of 0 for the first round, was not going to help. My second round I played Drew (who is becoming quite good), and I needed every bit of defense that I had. He still broke through twice (more than anyone ever has) and got to 4 LSs before I was able to come back to win it at the end. My third round was against Ian at the top table. He was ahead of me in differential, and was in a great position. If he won, he was guaranteed 1st place, and as long as he took 2 LSs, he was guaranteed 2nd place. In addition, he had something very unexpected in his deck which made it impossible for me to win the game. So we timed out with me ahead 3-2, giving me enough points to finish in 1st place, and Ian in 2nd. Brian ended up in 3rd. Meanwhile, I was proud of Alecia for having a great attitude despite losing all her games. It has been so fun for me to have her participating in tournaments with me, and I look forward to doing that more.

After that event ended, we were ready for Sealed Deck. I got the “F” deck, which I always seem to get, and which never seems to have enough offense for me. But the main problem was my opponent’s lack of LSs to rescue. In my first game against Ian, he had too long of a drought, and I lost 5-3. My second game was against Alecia (our only head-to-head matchup of the tournament), and this time she drew tons of LSs and very little defense. I won 5-4, and she was a great sport about it. My last game was against Drew, and the drought came back. He won pretty easily 5-3, which dropped me to 3rd place overall. Ian went undefeated and took 1st place (his best finish ever), and Drew took 2nd.

Our last event was T2-2p. This event was mainly scheduled for the benefit of all the T2 lovers down in GA and up in OH, as none of us really play T2 here in KY. However, we didn’t want the prizes to go to waste, so we played anyway. Drew made some changes to a deck that his dad had built for a previous tournament, and they obviously were the right ideas. He went undefeated and ended up in 1st place (his best finish ever). The critical game was between him and me in the 2nd round (since he dominated in the 1st and 3rd rounds). I had the lead 5-3, and half of the 3-liner saved. I was making a rescue attempt, and was down by 3 points of offense. I had 4 points of offense in the GEs in my hand, but he had a handful of cards, and I didn’t want to waste my GEs just for numbers when he could just play a single EE and get higher. So I just died, and waited for a better opportunity. Amazingly, the “better opportunity” never came as he stormed back to take 4 more LSs and win the game. Afterwards, he admitted that he didn’t have any EEs in his hand during that critical battle, and I would’ve won the game if I’d just played my cards. Arrrghh! I did win my other games though and pulled out a 2nd place, and Ian ended up coming in 3rd place in his first attempt at T2 ever.

Overall, it was a fun tournament. My playgroup played really well, and many of them had their best finishes ever. And out of 6 events, we had 5 different people finish in the top spot of something. I do hope that next year, things will work out better for other playgroups to join us, but beware. KY Redemption is getting stronger.

I wanted to go join you guys but I knew that I couldn't do both your Regional and Nationals this summer. So I had to weigh an easier trip to KY vs. a small chance of going to Nats (given the due date). It turns out that the choice really wasn't up to me anyways!

My second son Zachariah Wyatt Pequignot was born on July 7th 3:30 P.M. (29 days early) at 7 pounds 7ounces! So I missed seeing you down there but I was pretty happily occupied that weekend. On the other hand, things are looking much more promising to be able to go to Nats. Thanks for the talk we had; the wife and child are doing really good (he is gaining weight like a full term child)!

It was fun to see several of the players children playing alongside their parents. I can't wait to get to do that with my children. Lord willing, we'll all meet again!

Forgot to announce this earlier, but we had our first tournament of the new season at the end of September. For the first time, one of my students hosted the tournament, and he did a great job running a T1-2p local. There were a lot of great games, and a few surprises along the way.

We just hosted the 2012 EC Regional tournament and it was a great one. We had 23 players from 4 different states, and everyone had a wonderful time of fun and fellowship.

2013 Recap:
It has been a fun year for our playgroup. We only hosted local tournaments this year (which is smaller than normal), but our players continue to improve as demonstrated by their showing at the EC Regional tournament this summer. We brought 10 players and took many of the top spots as described in my recap.

Overall, we now have 7 players "leveled out" including 3 alumni (Michael Alonzo, David Eom, and Brian Jones) and 4 current players (Drew Wills, Andy Wills, Kayleb Matthews, and Caleb Stanley). We also have several players who are getting close (Ian Kratzer, Stevie Stedman, Wyatt Marcum, and Alecia Underwood). We're hoping to be bringing up to 15 players to Nats next month despite it being 12 hours away, which is pretty incredible to me.

Reviewing the past:
As I look back at where we were when this thread started 6 years ago, I am amazed at how this game has become such a big part of life here at Oakdale Christian Academy, and at how much our playgroup has become such a big part of the life of Redemption. Back then we had only been going to tournaments for about 1 year, and I think were hosting our 1st booster draft and 1st district level tournament. At this point we've held multiple state and regional level tournaments and have even assisted in hosting a national level tournament.

Back then even our top 3 players were hardly a blip on the national scene. At this point we have a National Champion (Sealed) and 3 other players who placed in the top 20 in T1-2p of last year's Nats. We also have at top 5 TEAM and a top 3 player from Type-A. As a playgroup we have also contributed greatly to the game. We have 1 player who serves as an Elder and all of the leveled out people assist in play testing. We have 1 player who helped get ROOT off the ground and has helped run that for years. We have 1 player who created the TEAMS category in it's present form. And we have 1 player who created and manages the Hall of Fame.

I regret that the above sounds like bragging, as I really am just trying to encourage everyone. There is nothing special about our playgroup. We started with just a few people, and none of us had great cards or any clue what we were doing. So all that has happened with us could just as easily happen to any other playgroup out there in the next 6 years. God has simply blessed us greatly, and all the glory goes to Him.

Looking to the future:
I'm feeling a bit more reflective I guess as I'm looking ahead and seeing that my involvement is probably going to diminish greatly over the next couple years as I begin a Master's Degree program. However I hope that our playgroup will continue to grow stronger and keep contributing to the Redemption community as others within our group step up to more leadership.

2014 Update:
Nats in NYC was awesome last August. My recap can be found here. To sum it up, we had 14 players there, and 12 of them placed in the top 10 of something.

Since Nats though Redemption has had to take a seat on the back burner of my life. I am currently working on a Master's Degree and it seems to fill almost all my free time. So I've turned over the leadership of the playgroup to some of the other guys here at Oakdale including Stephen Coates, Jason Waugh, and Andy Wills. This has been of limited effectiveness due to their schedules all being pretty restrictive as well. The result is that our group that once met weekly has probably only met 10 times in the last 7 months.

We have had 4 more players "Level Out" of our mastery system this year. They are Jason Waugh, Biruk Fisseha, Isaiah Johnson, and my oldest daughter Alecia Underwood. I'm super proud of all these players. They have really improved over the last couple years and have become formidable players.

My student, Kayleb Matthews did host a local tournament a little over a month ago, which was a lot of fun. And he will also be hosting the KY State tournament in a few weeks (April 11th-12th). We are hoping to see friends from surrounding states there. I'll put up more information about that in another post below.

We had a great KY State tournament this spring. Unfortunately none of our fellow players from surrounding states joined us, but our playgroup had a lot of fun. The tournament was clearly dominated by Kayleb Matthews who won 3 events and placed 2nd in a 4th event. We had a dozen different players place in at least one event, and for some of them, it was their first time to ever do that. It was also the first time there was a truly competitive T2 event made up of only KY players in the 8 years that I've been hosting tournaments here. This was also the highest level tournament ever hosted by one of my students (Kayleb). So there was a lot to celebrate!

We also had a small impromptu local tournament earlier this summer. We celebrated the return of Brian Jones, who was a former student of mine, and has now joined on staff here at Oakdale. It was also the first win for Jason Waugh who is also on staff here. I expect that both of these guys will have a bright future in Redemption.
