MN Type-2 Only Blowout Report

This was my third year of coming to the tournament, and it has been a blast every time. Wild Bill is one of the most fun and the most generous people in the Redemption community, and he definitely deserves mad props for organizing this tournament. I went to Rochester to get a ride from Ring Wraith, and I arrived early to play a multi player game. During that game I had like 4 plots used on me, and that's when I realized I'd be hurting for heroes beings I assumed Haman's Gallows would be pretty popular, and my only way to stop it was with Herod's Temple, (hint: I was wrong. None of my opponents used plots), so I added some hero recursion last minute. But I'm starting to get side tracked, so here it begins!

SEALED
Sealed was an absolute blast. I partnered up with my boi Ring Wraith and I got the G deck. In my mind, that was kind of awesome. MOSES? Yes. Red Dragon? Yes. Sapphira? Yes. I was afraid of 2x Johns and 2x Golden Calfs, but otherwise I thought the G deck was a better deck than the H deck. In fact, on our ride up here, I was thinking how awesome Red Dragon would be against another G deck. If I get Red Dragon + HoH (for Moses), I'd have them locked out if they didn't get an Angel or an interrupt (which I could counter with my own) barring an AotL. However, it didn't work that way at all. I ended up picking 3x Kings and 3x Patriarch, which I'm not sure is the right move. I don't open packs or play sealed, so I had no idea what's good.

My draft was pretty bad. I got an Annias and Ring Wraith traded me a second one. He also traded my a third Sapphira and a Women's Gomer, which was pretty cool. I really liked my defense: 2x Annias, 3x Sapphira, 2x Red Dragon, 1x Gomer, 2x Isaac Decieved, 2x Deceit of Sapphira, and then a bunch of other awesome battle winners on defense, but no interrupts. Yikes. My offense was absolutely terrible. I had a handful of negates, some banding, 2x Plague of Frogs, 2x Moses, Cov w/ Moses, and that's about it. So, I wasn't expecting much.

Game 1: Ring Wraith
Ring Wraith had an absolutely sick deck. His offense was repping with his 3x Great Faith, Sons of Thunder, and a bunch of other cool battle winners. I didn't get to see much of his defense, but he had some banding going on. My draw was pretty bad, as I struggled to get out characters. He also seemed to counter everything perfectly :c. I flip up an early game Unholy Writ and he Destructions it. A turn after he AOTLs me I draw my Judas' Plot. Not much you can do about that. He also fell me away. Jerk.
Score: 1-7

Game 2: Nameless (I think?)
This was a fairly uneventful game. I got a first turn Moses which got like 4 free rescues. My opponent couldn't get pass a fairly early Red Dragon, Annias, Sapphira, and a handful of enhancements. He turned up Burial Shroud near the end but it didn't buy him enough time.
Score: 7-0

Game 3: Prof Alstad
Similar to the first game, I got thrashed around again. Offensively, there wasn't much I could do with just a handful of negates and banding. Jordan captured a bunch of my characters (partly my fault. I once attacked with Aaron, not seeing Idolators in his territory....), and from that point I struggled making any rescues at all. There was one cool battle near the end, however. The score was like 6-1 or something and I attack with whatever that Gold lady that bands to a OT female is from the G deck banded to Miriam or something. He blocks with a brown evil band, and it is my initiative. I play Taking Egypt's Wealth and steal his Haman's Plot. He plays some random return hero card, I negate it. He plays Seige and bands in a bunch of dudes. I play another Taking Egypt's Wealth and take some random card, but at this point I saw he had AOTL in his hand so I knew I couldn't win (beings I had no banding on defense at this point). I threw down a few enhancements that put me in the lead for the battle, and he played Zelphodad's Sin followed by Unknown Nation. I then played some random enhancement and won the battle.
Score: 0or1or2orsomethinglikethat-7

Game 4-or-5: Scott Reuter. This is the only other game I remember, so I'm missing one....
Pretty sure we were both out of contention I don't remember a lot of this game, but my defense finally worked and did pretty well.
Score: 7-something

Overall: Sealed was a blast. It'd be awesome to do again if there weren't so many other game play variations that we could convert to t2, especially beings Bill was so generous ($10 got you 6 packs, 1 woman's pack, 1txp, 1 disciples. That's more than $30 worth of cards!!!).

Sepjazzwarrior, Ring Wraith, ProfAlstad, MJB, Alex Olijar, and I pretty much hung around until like 4am discussing broken combos and combing through the REG (well, that was more me), trying to find awesome stuff. I also helped Matt build his multi deck. Aaron, Idolators, Murmuring... after he schooled me with it later I regretted it. But oh well. I eventually went to sleep and woke up a handful of hours later. Everyone except like one person was already gone when I woke up, obviously due to my snoring. I took a 2 minute shower and ate some Granola, Raisins, and Apple Juice for breakfast then ran upstairs and got ready for the tournament.

About my deck:
About a week before the tournament I started playing RTS for the first time in many many months, and this was my first real exposure to the disciples metagame, as my only other t2 games I had played since TXP were against my local group and a multi player game against Gabe. During this stint of RTS I went like 2-4 or something to that effect, but I didn't expect too much beings half my opponent's were the top T2 players (Gabe, Justin, and Nathan highlighting it. My only victory against those 3 was a 7-6 win against Justin). During this time I had made several changes to my deck to hopefully counter a handful of powerful strategies. I was running some TGT/Silver offense with Phar defense with some SWS and Balaam (+charms) action.

T2 2P
Round One: Belle Reuter
Belle is an awesome player from my play group, but she hasn't played much if any t2. She borrowed one of CountFount's decks (so obviously she was disadvantaged from the start ;)), a TGT offense and a Crimson defense. The one thing that got my excited about this pairing was it broke the streak: as the last two years I played against a player that, in all seriousness, was way better than me (Tim Maly, Kirk Dennison). Now, I won both those games mentioned, but still. Don't kill my excitement.

I got off to a good start. I drew 3 He is Risens fairly fast and there wasn't much she could do to stop my MMoJ band. My defense held out fairly well by drawing a handful of Gold Shields and her MMoJ got set aside by my Pretension. I had charms most of the game as backup, which I didn't need.
Result: 7-0

Game 2: Th3 Unf0rgiv34bl3 or something like that. Use lots of numbers.
Martin always seems to get crazy draws against me, and this game was no different. Luckily my draw was fairly decent. The first couple of turns we used coward blocks: doms, Uzzah, etc etc. Eventually I broke through to get a soul but he took one right back quickly. I attacked with Angel of Warning to search for my Nazareth, as after seeing his deck I knew that would be a key to my victory. And, without a doubt, it was. At one point it was 2-2 or something, and I had no ECs or GEs, which was pretty painful. However, fortunately, I didn't have any souls out. He attacked with Hur to hope to generate a soul for next turn, but he forgot I had Nazareth out. I drew 7 cards which got me back on track. After that, my defense finally set up and I just spammed He is Risen.
Result: 7-3

Game 3: Cousin It
This game just gave me an awesome draw and it was over quick. He drew no defense and a bunch of souls (compared to my 0 souls) in his opening hand, but he did draw an Unknown Nation. However, I also drew Nazareth and that shut that down. He just couldn't get anything going against me. There was one cool battle, however. I attack, he blocks and make the battle FBTN. I drop He is Risen for the numbers, he plays an enhancement. I proceed to drop 2 more He is Risens and a Consider the Lillies (I think?) to get the mutual destruction. It was awesome.
Result: 7-0

Game 4: Gabe
Everyone knows that Gabe is one of the best players in the game. It was also my job to make sure he didn't win the tournament three years straight (see how well I did?). Before the game Wild Bill gave me a pep talk on how to beat Gabe. A month earlier, JSB predicted I would win the tournament. I was also hoping to break the streak: the last two years, Gabe handed me my first lost at this tournament (and in the first year I was there, he handed me my only loss). So, with everyone depending on me, I went into the game.

My draw against him started out fairly normal. I drew a fair amount of both offense and defense, but not a lot of the drawing or searching stuff that I wanted. When my searching stuff finally came, it was too late, beings we both had Nazareth laying on the table. Early in the game he made an attack, and I blocked with SWS (to get around his Wall of Protection) and exchanged for one of my characters and proceeded to band in his entire defense. He then played Grapes and won the soul.

However, this left him with little defense and me with a fair amount of offense and defense. Shortly thereafter, I was up 5-1 or something crazy (I had played my SOG already). However, he attacks and I make two stupid mistakes I don't want to talk about (I always make mistakes against him..... two years ago at Regionals I HT'd a NT soul out and attacked with an OT hero... that cost me second place...). It's a possibility that the second mistake might have cost me the game, but there's no way of telling. Depends what else he had in his hand at that point, but at the very least it would have bought me an extra turn or two, and at the maximum it would have let me go super saiyan and become a millionaire. Let's just say I nuked my offense and my only shot at stopping his rescues. He came back to win.
Result: 5-7

Game 5: Wanderer (father of my first round opponent....
Wanderer is the host of my playgroup, so we play pretty often. Don't listen to him when he say's he isn't very good  :-*, he won States before. However, it's been a while since he's beaten me in t2, so I was pretty hopeful, but the last few games have been determined by a small mistake by him, so I couldn't get too confident. I got off to a fairly fast start, and he couldn't stop my Angel in the Path -> Mary Magdalene band, and that won me quite a few souls. He got an early Captain out, which really scared me. It seems like Pharisees should be good against it, with lots of banding, some CBP stuff, and big enhancements (Pretension is 0/6, Self Righteous Prayer is 0/6, Gold Shield is 0/5, etc), but my deck has struggled against it. My pretensions stalled his Captain until I got Holy of Holies up, so it all worked out.

One battle I attacked with Angel in the Path banded to Salome and he played Rome Destroys Jerusalem. Yikes, beings I had all my forts and most of my heroes out (the others were at the bottom mostly due to Susana) out and I only have one copy of each. Fortunately I was able to use Herod's Temple to save two of my heroes who proceeded to win me the game.
Result: 7-2.

This left me with a record of 4-1. 12 points and +21 soul differential. This put me in second place, beaten by Gabe's 15 points and +19 souls and ahead of Josh's 12 points and +7 souls.

T2 MULTI
Round One: Jordan Alstad, Jayden Alstad, Nathan Voight.
This game was pretty cool, beings everyone was playing Pharisees. What does that mean? Drawing. Lots and lots of drawing. Drawing like you've never seen. Although not really, beings most rescues were FBTN or CTB. Jayden was the first one to get his wall out, mid game. So there was a chance, we just never gave anyone it.

Game started out pretty lulzy for me. My opening hand? 7 TXPS (2x Susanna, 2x Proud Pharisee, 1x Entrapping Pharisee, 2x Angel of Warning) and Golgotha. I make a RA with Angel of Warning and Search for Nazareth, beings I didn't put any False Peaces in my deck and I didn't want anyone who did to get a leg up on me. Things started out pretty slowly and Nathan used two writs on me, but nothing ever really progressed much. No one really wanted to attack me beings I had like 3 PP, Pharisees, ET, and SWS sitting in my territory and they knew that was scary. Jayden was forced to use his SOG defensively, but nothing much changed.

I had the last turn of the game. I used the Bronze Laver, hoping to get my NJ (in hind sight that was probably the wrong move, but hind sight is always 20/20). It didn't work, so I just played SOG. A while ago Nathan revealed his hand from PP, and it had SOG in it. Knowing this, I knew it was impossible for me to make a rescue while he had it, so I played Mayhem. I then proceeded to draw 6 evil cards (which is why the bronze lavar should have been saved), so I decided not to attack, as his pharisee band was larger than my offensive band and he would have that chance of drawing SOG. Jordan then played Mayhem and drew SOG, ending the score 5-5-5-5-4. Everyone won except Nathan. He lost.

At one point my Golgotha saved another player. cool.

Round Two: Pat Wester, someone I don't remember the name of, Craig Fountain
This game was pretty epic too. Things started off pretty normally, and I got a cool draw with some PP. Craig was hurting for the first couple turns beings his male OT heroes didn't have access to anything, but eventually I drew stuff for him. Except I wanted to block so I could draw. And I didn't want him to kill me so I played Gold Shields. So he didn't get a lot done. Eventually Pat and Craig decided they didn't like my defense so they decided to convert it. Yeah, they converted most of my Proud Pharisees and my pharisees to heroes. One of them was in the brigade of my choice. As Craig said, "It seemed like a good idea at the time". Too bad for him I proceeded to draw 6 and play He is Risen before battle to set aside his 5 evil characters.

I don't really remember the outcome, I think I tied for first. Although I felt really dominant the entire game due to the fact they let me draw as much as I wanted.

Round Three: Matt Brinkman, Craig Fountain
You know this game was way too epic just by looking at who was playing. Everyone decided to spectate this one instead of the top table, beings we're actually fun :-*. I got a really bad start, and Craig gave MJB a handful of free souls. Eventually I rescue my first one and it is fell away by MJB.

My offense couldn't really deal with anything they threw at me and it was pretty weak the entire game. My defense wasn't the greatest either, but I decided I needed to convert some PP beings they were either CTB'ing me (I discarded my Kingdoms early) or attacking with a BTN hero, so I didn't get to draw anyway. Matt then decided to place IoJ on my Proud Pharisees which made me sadface. I started to make a small come back, but my defense was pretty much shot by then. I also played SOG stupidly which cost me, but oh well. There was one cool battle, though: I attack with some angel banded to Susana for the women's soul. Craig blocks and kills my Angel the plays Balaam's. I play He is Risen to band in TSA (HoH was up). He then kills my Susana. I sadface.

Result: Something-Something-Lower than something (Craig and I tied).

This gave me 4th place with some weird point number.

Game 3 of T2 2P would be me, Scottie Hoover.  :P That game was just ridiculous...ugh....  But it was the only game I had up there that went anywhere near that bad, so I'm glad for that at least.  :P

Dear Mr. Rice,

You are a very very bad boy. Calling out us old people. Taking advantage of our inability to understand how much more dangerous a converted White Proud Pharisee is banded to a teal and gold PP can be with your saucy young winches sitting in the territory gathering lillies (I wished I had thought of it). My Emperors are still set aside believing they will get out of set aside.  It would have been much better had you recognized the importance of acting like you didn't want them converted.

Your a good man. Had a blast jacking with you in that final type 2 Multi game. And how many PP did we convert? HMMMMMM. 0, nothing, notta, zilch.

How did I give Gabe a better match than you and then end up near the bottom of the tournament in 2P? I know why, Gabe had No White Proud Pharisees.  ;D
Now that we're a family, I can be the ulll-timate DAD.

I didn't even know winches could be saucy   ::)
An unanswered question is infinitely better than an unquestioned answer.
