Florida State Tournament ThinkTank
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:27:37 PM »

I would like some feedback from Florida people about this year's state tournament. I am open to hosting it here in Orlando again. Are there any other hosts thinking about putting in an application? If not, what dates are good or bad? I was thinking June after school lets out. Teachers here are done after June 10th. I was thinking perhaps June 18th and 19th (Saturday and Sunday).

Let me know your thoughts (oh great, Roy is rubbing off on me).  ;)

If Roy is rubbing off on you, that'd be weird, since he is in NY.

I think those dates are fine but lemme double check.

Roy was my mentor when I started hosting in Connecticut. I was just an hour away from Long Island. Without Roy, I would have still been a Pokemon Gym Trainer.  ;)

Unless I have to do Coast Guard work that weekend it sounds great! But, I'll still have to think about competing... :)

So I'm lightyears away from facing Roy? ;)

My brother & I weren't planning on hosting the State event. What about what you mentioned to us about the SE regionals?

Either way I'm sure many of the players in South Florida would be for sure interested in any events as State and above.

I would be interested in coming to the state tournament you would be hosting. My friends and I have already discussed our interest in such a tournament (and my lack of state points). I would personally prefer a friday/saturday event although I'm not sure if my friends could make those days. It would be easier to have a date set and planned so we can all make sure we have time off for the tournament. Perhaps you could tutor me in calculus because this stuff is hard lol.
We must be the change we want to see.

Since I would like to do all events, we could consider spreading the events over Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon. What would probably be best would be to have everyone interested in coming post here with what events (and on which days) would work best. If we have to double up events, then Type 2 events will be paired up with Type 1 events, since we hardly ever play Type 2 in Orlando. There will have to be some compromises, but I think we can create a schedule that is amicable to most.

If there are no objections, I will send in an application for Florida States here in Orlando again.

My personal preference:

Friday Night: Type 2 Multiplayer and Sealed Deck (simultaneous)
Saturday Morning: Type 1 2-player
Saturday Afternoon: Booster Draft
Saturday Night: Type 1 Multiplayer
Sunday Afternoon: Type 2 2-Player and TEAMS (simultaneous)

I taught Calculus back in 1998. Bring what you have and we'll figure it out. It's math... how hard could it be?  ;D

Due to a conflict with my playgroup, I would like to bump the FL State tourney to June 10-12. Please PM or post if this a problem. I would like to send in an application this weekend.

Any time ideas for Sunday? I know I won't be there to at least 1pm maybe 1:30 because I do children's church so I must be there for both services.

I was presuming an after-church time slot.

Last chance for replies. I will be sending an application out no later than Monday. The current plan is for June 10, 11, 12. I listed a tentative plan for each day a few posts up. I would like to solidify these plans as far ahead of June as possible. Any free time will be used for other gaming. I have a Wii and a PS2 for video games. I no longer have the air hockey table, so that (and air hockey attacktix) are out. I have a plethora of board games, including Settlers of Catan, Rail Baron, and Risk (original or LotR).

It all sounds great to me. I like spreading the tourney over 3 days, sounds good to me. Saturday/Sunday would work best for me.

I was wondering Tim how many of the kids in your group don't have sleeves for their decks? The kids who have type 2 decks, how many dont have boxes? I remember seeing your kids using zip lock bags. How many kids have type 1 decks, with sleeves, but dont have deck boxes for 50-56 card decks?

Most of my players have sleeves and their homemade cases (like the one they made for me that says "YMT"). Their cousins do not have sleeves or cases. You'll have to ask Josh Kopp (KarazyVP) about his family.

As an aside, I would like to have sleeves available for new players. How cheap can you get them?

My players do not normally play Type 2, however none of their Type 1 decks are less than 63 cards, and some are big enough to be Type 2.  ;D

I believe pushing the State tournament further back would be better for us actually. Gives us more time to set aside money for gas and time to plan ahead.

The problem with pushing it later is that I will eventually be working at Disney full-time in the summer. I was not planning on starting until after June 18th.

I have plenty of sleeves, only one deck box though, though atm I'm using a computer power supply box to carry my cards in. It works quite well.

Joseph seems quite content to carry his decks in the ammo box.  ;D
