Hello,

I was wondering how do you run a booster draft?  Are there minimum players and are there packs you can substitute?

There are no specific restrictions for what packs, tins or boxes you use in a Booster Draft. The important thing is to announce what you are using (and charging) before the tournament, or at the very least well before the category begins. I know that I have used two of certain packs when I was out of others (i.e. 2 Priests packs when I was out of Kings packs).

Did you need specific instructions on how to start the Booster Draft round?

Since some packs have different sizes, it depends on which packs you're using. You want to give people enough to make a legal deck, which requires at least 50 cards, and at the same time try to give at least a little wiggle room. I think generally you want to use at least 6 packs (per person).

Follow up to that - each person only needs 43 cards in their draft pool to build a legal deck - 7 generic Lost Soul cards should either be brought by each player or provided by the host for each player.  7 Lost Soul cards plus 43 drafted cards will get you to the legal minimum size of 50 cards.

Browa's right about 6 packs being the minimum.  You'll want to have each player's draft pool to be more than 43 cards so that there are some deck building choices to be made.  6 foil packs will put 56-60 cards in each player's draft pool (Unlimited and Prophets boosters only have 8 cards per pack, all other in print foil packs have 10 cards).  Alternatively, and I'm excited to try this at some point, 4 box packs (TexP, Disciples, Early Church, and Persecuted Church) would also provide 60 cards, and of much higher quality than foils.  Other than making sure each player can draft enough cards to feasibly build a deck, you as a host have some freedom in setting what actually gets drafted at your tournaments.  I'd definitely encourage more than 6 foil packs if you can swing it!

Before I forget again, the answer to your other question is that you need a minimum of three players, since Booster Draft is a "multiplayer" category, not a "2-Player" category.

As far as the procedure is concerned, here is the breakdown:

1. Each player is given the same number and type of packs.
2. Going one pack at a time, each player opens the same type of pack (i.e. Priests) at the same time.
3. After opening the pack, the player chooses just one of the cards in that pack.
4. After each player picks their one card, the rest of the cards in the pack are passed to the player on their right.
5. Each player then looks at the cards given to them, and they choose just one of those remaining cards.
6. After all players have chosen their one card, the remaining cards are again passed to the player on their right.
7. This process continues until there are no more cards to choose from that pack type.
8. You then take out the next type of pack and open those, with each player choosing one of the cards in the pack they just opened.
9. This time, each players passes the cards to the left instead of to the right. (You will alternate which direction to pass the cards with each new pack)
10. After all the packs have been opened, each player now looks at the cards they drafted and creates a legal deck.

The host (or each player if necessary) then provides up to 8 generic Lost Soul cards with no special abilities. Players will need these since it is not likely that all players will draft enough Lost Soul cards. They may switch out the generic Lost Soul cards with any special ones they drafted, as long as the proper deck-building Lost Soul count is met.

If you're going to lead a play group it's good to get connected with a wholesale Redemption place so you can pick up large quantities of packs below retail pricing. The two options I know of are through Cactus Games and Covenant Games. They can fill you in on the requirements if that's a direction you'd like to pursue.

If you're just looking to purchase packs for a one time booster draft, you can buy them at retail pricing through Cactus Games or Three Lions. Additionally, if you post in the market on these boards you're likely to find someone who has extra packs that will sell them at a discount. Purchasing from a non-affiliated third party might seem risky, but in my many years of experience the people on these boards are very reliable. If you ask for references you'll probably find that many people here can vouch for one another.
