2011 Lifetime RNRS Update
« on: May 14, 2012, 04:20:44 PM »

Hey,

The latest version of the Career RNRS spreadsheet is available here.

This version, for the first time, includes totals by tournament level.
For the "last X years" and "first X years" column, X is defined by the top cell in the column.

Each category has a "1" in the cell above the category name.  The category totals for each player are multiplied by that number before being added into the players total.  So increasing or decreasing that number allows you to increase or decrease the weight given to that category.  Changing the "1" to a "0" allows you to exclude that category allowing the user to fairly easily find sub-totals for any sets of categories they wish.

I normally include some analysis of the numbers in my post releasing the spreadsheet.  I'm going to leave that up to you this time.  If you find something that surprises or fascinates you please post and share it with everyone.

Tschow,

Tim "Sir Nobody" Maly

Continuing the tradition looking at the top representatives of each class, we have some new names this year (in red) and of course a new Rookie of the Year:
Here's an interesting stat:

Highest ranked player based on their first year of earning any RNRS points:
2002 - John Michaliszyn
2003 - Justin Alstad
2004 - Ben Shadrick
2005 - Andrew Wester
2006 - Gabe Isbell
2007 - Mark Underwood
2008 - Robert Mulye
2009 - Ben Michaliszyn
2010 - Jonathan Majus
2011 (AKA Rookie of the Year) - Randall Koutnik

Its always an honor to see that list and be surrounded by some great players.

Mark why are a few of the players in red?

Also excited to be ranked 65 currently, which about where I was last year I think.

Were his first points in 2001?

I don't have my spreadsheet on this computer, but if I remember correctly there are a couple people from your year who are closing on you, pal.  I wish you success this summer and will be excited to see if you keep your spot next year.

Mark why are a few of the players in red?
Those are the players who are new to the list this year.

I will do my best to hold the spot! Got a good amount of points from NY States and hoping to rank at NE regionals. Other then that I will have to wait till next year when I host a bunch more.

Thanks for doing these lists, they're always fun to read.

My dad (Mark Mierzejewski) is listed as getting some Sealed Deck points at a district tournament in 2008, his only points since 2003. I'm surprised he attended a tournament at all, unless that was a mistake and the wrong Mierzejewski got points.

I don't remember going to many tournaments in 2008 besides Nationals, but I apparently attended a district tournament and got some T1 Multi points that year. This is a mystery to me. In 2008, I graduated from college, leaving my Pittsburgh playgroup and moving to South Carolina, where there was no playgroup. I attended SE Regionals and Nationals that year, but no districts down there. Those were the last tournaments I attended until I moved back up to Connecticut in 2010.
I see that other members of my Pittsburgh playgroup at the time - Alex Olijar, Josh Meneely, Josiah Fiscus, and all four Berkenpases - didn't get any 2008 points at districts that I noticed... what was this mystery tournament?

Perhaps in my brief time before moving down to SC, while I stayed at my parents' house for a couple weeks, or maybe even during spring break or something, I attended a Massachusetts tournament? I know those have been running for a while, so it's possible both of us went to something up there, but my mind is blank. Maybe he remembers.

If he did attend, that makes 4 consecutive years of 0 RNRS points between years of ranking. I wonder if anyone has that beat.

Longer scoreless streaks:
Nick Jaeger of Wisconsin scored no points from 2005 through 2009, but he got 25+ on the surrounding years.

Kansas' Stephen Nesfeder ties this run, not scoring between 2004 and 2010.

Brian Cooper is in the top 100 all-time RNRS scorers, despite only getting points in 2002 and 2008. This ties the other runs, but with impressive endpoints.

Michael Van Devender of Missouri almost beats the record; except for a single 2 point tournament in 2005, he went from 2004 through 2009 without scoring anything, while getting points in '03 and '10. Similarly, Wisconsin's own Ken Locklin got his first RNRS point in 2002 (just 1 point that season), 3 in 2007, and 10 in 2009.

Even longer: Minnesota's Keenan Berg. Scoring just one point in 2002 and getting 12 in 2009 and nothing in between, he went six scoreless seasons between getting on the rankings.

But here's something tough to beat: Art Middlekauff was the stuff of legends through 2002, but after that he seemingly retired from the game. Except he got one single point in the 2011 season, making a RNRS comeback after 8 dry years. It looks like some other Middlekauffs just got their first RNRS points this year - maybe he unretired to play with his daughters?

In any case, congratulations to you, Mr. Middlekauff! You will receive your trophy in another 9 years.

Three players have gotten points every single year from 2001 to 2011:
Chris Bany (MN)
Tim Maly (NE)
Adam Erickson (MN)

Several missed just one year:
John Michaliszyn (MA) - 2001
Sam Nurge (CT) - 2001
Brandon Abbott (CA) - 2001
Bryon Hake (CA) - 2003
Ben Arp (WA) - 2010
Ben Nicholls (MN) - 2010
Eric Largent (GA) - 2011

New York's Randall Koutnik is the highest-ranking player to score in only one tournament season. A whopping 291 points in the 2011 season, and that's without getting any Nationals points! He's already the 103rd highest scoring player.

I tried finding some claim to fame of my own. I can't find if anyone has claimed more home states (I've had three: CT, PA, SC), but I imagine someone else must've moved twice or more while actively playing. The best I've got - everyone ranked above me except for one person (Roy Cannaday) has scored more than me in Type II events. (The highest-ranked player with no Type II points: #79, Jordan Drott.) Also, no one ranked above me has fewer local points than me.

My dad and I (and a couple others) would tie for longest last name, if not for #660, Daniel Steinbruckner, beating us by just one letter.

A special shoutout to the player tied for #1144: "Name Not Provided". Mr./Ms. Provided, hailing from Connecticut apparently, scored 10 RNRS points in 2003, scoring in four categories in both locals and districts. It seems he/she even won Type 1 Multiplayer at a district. So congratulations, whoever you are/aren't.

I will certainly have to mention this to my brother. :)

I'm guessing this was primarily due to his ban... ::)

My guess, Brandon, is that any post-Nationals tournaments count toward the next year. So that December 2001 tournament probably counted in the 2002 "season".

Also, that site has a picture of Chris Ramsey from 10+ years ago, back when he apparently moonlighted as Jonathan Lipnicki:
