Yet Another New/Old Player - MD States?
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:56:44 AM »

Hi everybody, I am returning to Redemption after a few years off (had to finish college!) and decided to rejoin these message boards.  I was here once upon time at the old message boards but didn't post much.  It's nice to see some names that I recognize.  Having graduated I have know moved to Maryland and am in the process of establishing a playgroup there (already have 4 players including me).  So I just wanted to say Hi and ask for prayer for this playgroup, I am hoping that the Lord will grow this group!  Cheers! :)

to Marti and Sean:  I'm in Abingdon, Maryland not to to far from south/central PA.  I saw your group online and wasn't sure if you were still active.

to TheKarazyvicePresidentRR:  Hi I remember you. It's good to see your still playing!

On the tournament hosts page it lists a couple of hosts for maryland, does any one if any of them are still active?

I'd totally be willing to help with anything in MD.... MD has kinda died on the tourney scene.

TechnoEthicist : Are just visiting the area in July?  If you could pm me with a date I am setting my first Local Tournament and I was thinking around July might be a good time for a first tournament (My players are coming along nicely).

I would like to host tourneys pretty regularly but I want to start small and try to generate some more local interest to grow the group.  Maybe I can host next years State (Lord Willing...),  We have a decent sized church and there are several motels and restaurants around here so we would probably be good for a large-ish tournament some time in the future.  Any one have any tips for growing a small group?

I played my first Redemption tournament in Maryland YEARS ago, probably 10 years or so (I think it was just after Warriors). I barely remember anything in it except that my dad placed somewhere, and there was the soda Dr. Wow there. Not sure if you were involved in that, but who knows?

Since you appear to be rather close to 95 it will probably be easy for me to get to you in the event that I am able to come.  I live in Germantown which, if you don't know, is in northern Montgomery county.  I will be working in Nebraska until July25 and then will be down to NC on August 7.  If you have a tournament between those dates I would try to come and help out.  Don't feel like you have to try and work around my busy summer schedule though.
May you prosper greatly!

Brad and Gretel are moving to Maryland after they get married. It'll be mid july.

I live about 2 hours from there now, but I am probably moving near Philadelphia in next year or so, which is only an hour and a half away.

Wow. Small world. I used to live in Germantown when I was teaching at Montrose Christian School in Rockville. My son was born at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. You can imagine how fun it was getting my pregnant wife from Germantown to Silver Spring using the Beltway.  :o

Yeah, getting to Holy Cross from Gtown is quite an adventure without a pregnant woman in the car.

When did you teach at Montrose?  I know a couple of people who were students there.

I taught there from 1997-1999, then became a Youth Pastor in Hagerstown.

YMT, you lived in Hagerstown? I live 45 minutes north of there and go shopping there all the time. I go to church in Chambersburg.

Yes. That was during the Pokemon card craze, but I had a small Redemption playgroup. I didn't know anything about tournaments or the boards. I bought the Factory set for $99, though.  ;D

I'm not sure of the years that they attended but do you recall the last name of Hawksford or Sebastian?  I'm pretty sure they weren't there while you were but just wondering.

Blessings everyone!

Ok, if I ever did host a 2009 State Tournament in MD:

1.  Which one-day date would be ideal for those who may be able to attend?  Please note that July is tight because of two dates:  July 10-11 ( NorthEast Regionalsand July 29 - August 3 ( 2009 Nationals)

2.  Would Korunks be able to provide the venue?  I will take care of all logistics including card supply etc. c/o Walsh Conley.  I will need the venue as early and as late as possible.

3.  We could always arrange for a non-weekend MD States if you wish.  I wish to maximize attendance at this tourney especially for those who will not be able to attend Nats this year.

4.  Sean and I could probably try to invite the DiMaggio's to attend (they're only about an hour away from Korunk's area).  We can all pray this happens --- a comeback of a once largest recorded playgroup in MD).  Marti --- I should put you in charge of the prayer mission for this, k?  Remember the nostalgia?  Just ..... awesome.

That's all for now.

THINKTANK, ALL!

Godbless.

I'm not trying to be a Pessimistic Pete but I'm not confident they would come because of the lack of participation since June of last year.  I know they were having some hectic stuff involving their house and renovations and such.  If the tournament is advertised and they are able to come I wouldn't doubt that they would try to be there.  I just think other things are taking priority right now.  Of course, I say this having lost communication with them because all I have is Ginger's e-mail and she doesn't seem to use it...at all.

SoulSaver:  My name was the same as it is now, I was Korunks on the old boards.

About hosting a state tournament in 2009, did you mean host it before Nationals this year?  How big are state tournaments?  The Venue I have access to may not be large enough.  I also have no tournament hosting experience, (never even been to one).  I am not trying to say no I am just trying to get details so I can take it to the Lord in prayer.  I am excited about the oppurtunity but I am concerned about the details.

I believe that Roy (Reyzen) was suggesting that he be the host with your place being the location.  Because you haven't hosted a tournament before, you wouldn't even be given the bid to host a state tournament yet.  That's where Roy's experience comes in.  As far as numbers, I would expect no more than 20 people to come not including those of your own play group that you have going right now.
May you prosper greatly!
