I was a D&D DM for my neighborhood, so I frequented the local hobby shops and cleaned them out of every module they stocked. When I saw the MTG cards, I thought they were "Spell Cards" that were a condensed version of the rulebook in index card size. I thought this would make it easier to store information. When I realized they were something completely different, I just tossed them.
i bet you're kicking yourself knowing the majority of cards in those first sets are easily worth hundreds, thousands of dollars.
