Tyler, I forget when we talked at Nats...do you play baseball competitively?
No I play lacrosse.

That's right!  And Kirk plays rugby.  I just can't remember who plays baseball.  Maybe Largent??

New York teams have an unfair advantage because they have a ton of money.
I disagree. NFL Giants, NY Jets, MLB Mets? Only Yankees have such a high payroll on their team is because of George. The other NY teams really do not pay high payrolls at all.

Giants and Jets are football...they can only spend so much.  Mets do spend a lot of money on free agents.  However, Mets have bad luck, throw money at the wrong player, and play in the National League where there is no DH.  Oh, and they have a history of disappointment to their fans which factors in.  ;)

Fact. Mets have the second highest payroll, only behind the Yankees. fact.
Fact. Despite this, the Mets didn't finish above .500... Fact.

In all fairness, the Red Sox do indeed spend a ton of money, too. The main difference is that the majority of the Red Sox expenses are in denominations other than the American dollar (especially yen).

That article is nice. 2 New York teams, I ate my words, lol. I knew the Yanks would be on there, but not the Knicks.

I believe that Mark McGwire will come back after Pujols gets hurt in the playoffs. He will play the playoffs steroid free, hitting .332 with 13 hrs and 33 RBIs. He will lead the Cards to the title and win, and Crash can once again be proud of his Mark McGwire, chase for the homerun record, poster hanging in his old bedroom  :o

Has anyone lost love for the game since all of the steroid stuff has come to the surface? Do you find yourself saying, " Jason Heyward hit a 450 foot home run in spring training the other day. He must be on the juice!"

Steroids are more legit than cheating methods in the past. Steroids help you physically, I don't view them any different than extreme training regiments. (Some positives, some negatives)

Whereas Walter Johnson used the spitball, Babe Ruth corked some bats, etc.

I lost some love for baseball when I played it as a kid and spent the whole time standing out in left field with nothing to do.  I lost more love for the game when I watched it on TV and sat there for hours with no one scoring at all.  I lost all love for the game when the whole sport shut down due to the strike in the 90's (as if getting paid millions of dollars wasn't enough for the players and making more millions of dollars wasn't enough for the owners).

I regained a little love for the game during the homerun chase between Mcgwire and Sosa, and Bonds HR chase for the all-time record.  I then lost that love again when the whole steroids thing came out.  At this point, I couldn't care much less about MLB.

The Mauer deal is awful. The Twins are going to be in a pickle in years to come.

Giving a GREAT hitter with unproven power $23 million / year = Bad idea.
Giving a catcher a 8 year deal = Bad idea.
Giving someone with a history of injuries = Bad idea.

Then again, it would be franchise suicide to let Mauer walk. Seems like half the people I meet think Mauer is the most important guy since Jesus.

Unproven power? You must have missed last season...
It's doubtful he'll catch all 8 years...if the Twins don't find a franchise 3rd baseman in the next 5 years, Mauer could end up playing 3rd (or anywhere else on the field--this is a guy who was an all-state athlete in 3 sports...)
While he's had some injuries, none of them have been season-ending.

After getting a new ballpark (publicly funded for the most part), the Twins simply could not lose the Hometown Hero and the face of the franchise.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

He had one decent season. After that, his season high HR total is what? 13? I'm predicting it right now: Mauer hits 22 HRs next year.

And thats why the contract was too big. Good hitting first (third to a lesser extent) basemen are a dime a dozen. What really set Mauer apart was he had such a good bat in the catcher's position. The Twins have Danny Valencia in the minors, too, who shouuld really be their third basemen now....

Catchers are injury prone. He has had back problems that kept him from playing. Those aren't good signals.

I love Mauer as much as everyone else, but it was just a bad signing. Its going to leave the Twins gasping for air down the road, the payroll is going to be above $100 mil by the 2011 season. A small market team should never give someone that big of a contract. (Although I guess the Twins aren't small market anymore

One thing you have to take in to account when it comes to Mauer, is that they aren't in the dome anymore!  Since they will be playing on real grass his injuries, more than likely, will be less often and less length of time.

My love for baseball is only exceeded by my love for God, wife, family and friends.  Steroids is an aberration that will be corrected when none of the users get elected to the Hall.

As for Heyward...shhhhh!!  I've been able to draft him as my 3rd or 4th outfielder in most leagues because he's pretty much flown under the radar so far.   :D

I'm sorry your experience was not positive.   :'(

I, too, felt MLB betrayed me when they missed the World Series.  It's taken a long time to regain my trust and steroids hasn't helped.  It's sad when simple greed could postpone a Series when WWII did not.

Dustin Pedroia renewed my love for baseball - he's the polar opposite of the stereotypical athlete.
