I think I did valentines day the wrong way then..

I spent my Valentines Day with the Hallmark Store.

The first hour or so of Valentines Day (at least the first hour I was awake) was spent with my wife, who I drove to her 8:15 class. The next hour was spent by myself getting ready to go do my workout. The hour after that I spent working out with my brother, mother, cousin (well, she's five and colored pictures the whole time while the rest of us worked out), friend, and two old guys that I don't know very well (but they seem cool nonetheless). The next two hours I spent by myself, cleaning my townhouse and getting ready for class. The hour after that I spent with about 10 other students and my professor (who takes eccentricity to a whole new level) in a barely discernible differentiable geometry lecture on a change of variable procedure for a Riemannian metric describing velocity on a defined patch of a 2-D parametrized surface in R3.

The next two hours I spent by myself working in my office, then going to lunch. That's when my day started getting better:

I spent the following three hours putting the finishing touches on my Valentine's Day plans. First, I went to the store and bought myself a pair of ice skates. I then came home, did a bunch of tidying up that I hadn't finished this morning, showered, shaved, and dressed up. After that, I went to go pick up my wife from her class, which ended at 9:00 PM. When I picked her up, I gave her the card I had picked out for her, which she thought was hilarious and very sweet. I then informed her that I had another surprise for her. She had no idea what it was, and I didn't say anything, I just started on our usual way home.

That's when my plan really started to unfold. You see, I had never ice skated in my life, but it was something that my wife loved to do. Many times she had tried to convince me to go with her, but I always made an excuse not to go (because I was terrified of not only causing myself severe physical pain, but also of the humiliation that I would undoubtedly endure). But one day while I was riding the bus past a park near our place with a skating area, I decided I was going to try it. So we get to the street the park is on, but instead of going straight as if we were going home, I turned left into the parking lot for the park. She was confused. When we parked, I promptly got out of my truck and produced what I had been hiding in my truck: her ice skates and the ones that I had just bought for myself. She was surprised, shocked that I wanted to try it, and excited. So for the next 45 minutes or so, we skated.*

She said it was her best Valentine's Day ever. I figured that not only would I try something new, but I would prove to myself that knowing what your Valentine really likes is way better than flowers and chocolate.


*By skated, I mean I held on to her the majority of the time while my feet kept going in opposite directions uncontrollably. I never fell, but I only let go of her twice the whole time.
