Should I create my own martial art system?
« on: July 18, 2009, 09:52:31 PM »

Hello, I am a kid who has a lot of experience in arts such as chess, is well built (not thin), and has no experience with actual face-to-face martial arts training.  I do know several different takedown techniques as well as self-defense techniques, also can study many bone-breaking techniques as well.  Most of this comes from videos by Expertvillage on Samurai Martial Arts and also some Taekwondo and Tai Chi Chuan.  Is it wrong to actually mix these together to create my own personalized style of martial arts?  If so, it would be much more internal (relying on awareness of mind, spirit, etc).  What does everyone think?

Signed,
Ethan

It should also be noted that I have EXTREMELY LITTLE experience in Krav Maga.  I do not practice it, but I know some of its techniques and such.

One of the reasons I want to do this is because many martial arts that I like (Tai Chi Chuan, etc) are based on false philosophies that contradict the Word of God.  This martial art would be based on the Word of God.

I'm kicking around ideas.  I don't want to practice a martial art based on Buddhism.

A word of caution, "creating" your own system is very difficult.  There is only so much you can learn by studying techniques with out a teacher.  I have trained both at home and at a dojo and the dojo is by far the best place to be to learn how to defend your self.  I have studied non-christian styles and not been influenced by false philosophies.  Around where are you located?  I may be able to help you find somewhere to train.

I currently study a Christian martial arts style, grounded in biblical teachings.  Martial Arts is not incompatible with the bible.

Thanks, also what style do you train in?  I would love to train in a Christian style.  Thank you very much for mentioning!  I also live in the Southern Missouri area.

There is a Martial Arts Academy near there that claims to be christian.  I would recommend checking it out.  But let me P.M. you with a list of Things to ask to verify that it is a place worth going to.  I have evaluated many schools in the past and Have a good idea on what to look for, and what to avoid. I'll send it tomorrow.

I practice Wato Kai. It isn't a "christian version" of martial arts but there is no eastern aspects involved.

Do muay thai and jujutsu. Thats comprehensive. You can't create a "new" martial art, everything is already been done. Every martial art has techniques that occur in other arts. Also, don't buy into the whole "spirit and mind" thing so much, nothing compares with training. You can't win fights without putting lots of hard work in, sorry. In the end, its all about how fast you gas, how much power you have, how quick you are, and how much knowledge you have. Its almost completely physiological. MMA is a sport, just like any other sport.

Good news, I got some training from a friend who happens to be a 1st Degree Black Belt in American Freestyle Karate.  We sparred for a long time and he says I fight like a 2nd Degree Blue Belt to Red Belt.

But no one can deny the fact that good martial arts is backed by a lot of calculation and reflex.  Your mind fights half the battle.

Thats true, but tactical calculation is very different from all this Ki garbage that everyone always talks about. And most of what happens in a fight is pure reflex, the movements have been trained into your "muscle memory."

Yeah, I agree. All that meditation and eastern philosophical aspects of martial arts isn't real-that is fake.  I mainly mean tactical calculation and extremely fast reflexes.

Meditation is by no means fake. In fact, I would think meditation essential to any form of martial arts. Meditation is essential for establishing control over your mind and without having control over your mind there's no way to control your chi.

For some types, that is true.  But more most, it is awkward philosophy.  I do a certain type of meditation that does just gain you focus and control of your mind.

The philosophy might be difficult for you to understand, but it is built that way for a reason.

Well, a lot of different meditation exercises have philosophies that contradict the Bible.  That is where I'm coming from-if the meditation contradicts the Bible, count me out of it.

I think you're just going off what you've been told, not actual experience with these meditation exercises.
