I was doing a devotional and this word popped up. I would like to know what it means from a biblical stance. Could someone explain?

This might need to be in the Open Discussion section.

Gnosticism is based around the cultic Gnostic gospels, the books of Thomas, Judas, and some other ones...many of their beliefs are displayed in The Divinci Code, if you've seen that. The gospels proclaim that Jesus married Mary Magdalene, never died, and only women could get into heaven, and any man who makes himself a women will be saved. They also believed that they had special knowledge. I don't know too much, but those are the basics.

It was the first major departure and set of false teachers that sprang up in the early church.  It was centered around a quest for "secret knowledge", likely inspired by Greek philosophy's quest for wisdom.  It led quickly to an arrogant spirit of "we know more than your average Christian", that in my opinion laid the groundwork for later clergy/laety (sp) classifications of Christians.  Because a Gnostic is "enlightened" with his secret knowledge, he can say the bible teaches things that most of us would say are wrong, but in his opinion we are just the "unenlightened".  Something like that.

Do you honestly think that Gnosticism is directly related to the development of Clergy?

Various thick, soft dumplings. They may be made from semolina, ordinary wheat flour, potato, bread crumbs, or similar ingredients.

However, it presents some very controversial ideas that might confuse young ones. This it why Colin was banned and Open Discussion was created.

To be fair, Colin was banned months after Open Discussion was created.

stefferweffer is mostly correct.  I use the term "mostly" because in my studies I haven't read anything in my studies that singled out clergy.

Gnosis is greek for knowledge.  Gnosticism was full blown in the mid 1st to 2nd century.  According to Gnostics, the highest goal for Christians is to pursue and attain knowledge, especially "secret knowledge."  Again, according to gnostics, the more knowledge you gain...the closer your relationship with God.

I did say the whole "clergy" analogy was my opinion, based on an "upper class" of Christians that would read the scriptures to the audience in a language that the audience did not understand.  Even today I have spoken to so many people who attend schools, upper and lower education, of certain denominations, and when they ask a biblical question regarding WHY their denomination does something the way that it does, they are told that they are not to question such things.  But I digress, and I apologize fot the opinionated aside.

This thread is now about Colin.

I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Ok, I got what gnosticism is (even though I'm under 15 years of age) and you guys did a very well job of explaining. In a side note on the devotional, it gave me the reference to go to a reference in Revelation. What I'm wondering is how this is linked to Revelation something where a woman gives birth do a child and god takes the child into heaven before it can be eaten by a dragon.
