What impression do you have?
« on: September 17, 2010, 07:31:06 PM »

A post recently got me thinking which happens quite often on here. Someone said that after a short period of time people develop a reputation based on their posts, trading, etc.. I know this may open up into a bunch of sarcastic remarks which this may deserve and I am not fishing for some compliments, either deserved or not. However, if you have conversed with me on these boards, what is your impression of me. I know what I think about me, but to get the perspective from someone else is infinitely more valuable sometimes. If you want to take the time to respond, that is fine, and I don't care if it is negative or positive; let it fly. Be honest! (Oh and if this is just plain weird then say so and I will just delete it and pretend it was never posted...)

I dunno if you'd want mine, because we met at Nats.  That may add bias.

Oh, good point! If you know me from other places than the boards, then that is fine too, but feel free to split your opinion if you saw a difference between in person and on the boards. I think it is super interesting how people can take a remark on the boards in a way that it was never intended which is another reason why I am curious...

On the boards: a Youth Minister who likes Redemption, and is interested in contributing to the community.
In person: a Youth Minister who REALLY likes Redemption, and especially gigantic decks.

It is extremely difficult for me to try to imagine how I would view you based solely on the forum, since we have developed such a friendship at real life tournaments over the last 4 years.  But I'll at least attempt it:

I think I would view you as someone who was willing to go to extremes to promote Redemption.  I would see initiatives like the new host program last year that motivated a lot of new people to host tournaments and ended up giving away a complete set of every card in the game (the biggest prize that I'm aware of ever being given away in the history of Redemption).  I would see someone who has hung out with the "tax collectors and prostitutes" (MTG players at a secular card shop) in order to introduce them to Redemption, and who has actually made some significant contacts there as a result.

On a less deep level, I would see someone who doesn't post very often, but practically never posts spam.  I would see someone who rarely enters into any debates about anything whether it is rulings or religious issues.  In spite of this, I would see someone who was intellegent, educated, and was able to express themselves well.  I would see someone who has every card in the game, but practically never trades (this is an area where my experience IRL doesn't match up since you trade all the time at live tourneys).  I would see someone rarely talks about their personal ability to win games, but must win a lot based on the few times they do talk about it (this is another area where my experience with you IRL doesn't match up very well since you seem to always lose when I'm around). :)

Overall, I would see someone who I would suspect would be a good friend if we ever got the chance to hang out.  Thankfully I've had that chance many times, and can gladly report that impression to be quite accurate :)

From what i've seen in your posts:

Seems like you're easy to get along with.

You have a good sense of humor and seem to joke around with ppl a lot which is awesome.

Also you seem to be a pretty positive guy.  Someone to encourage someone and build em' up.  Haven't seen a lot of negative posts from you. (Unlike me sometimes )

You seem like the kind of person that, if forced to attack someone with a golf club, wouldn't have me on the top of their list.

I'd be more prone for a three wood. frenzies are not fun afterward...

I had fun at nationals in multiplayer with you. three 150 (well, mine was 100) decks FTW. can't think of a time on the boards when you've thrown off my expectations for a good board member

You don't really post enough for me to have much of an opinion.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Thanks guys...and I guess that is what it comes down to. I do care about what impression I am making. I guess you could say I want to represent Jesus well, and very often I wonder if that is happening. I appreciate your candid remarks and funny puns (five iron frenzy...LOL)!

BR stands for Brian Reid, a redemption player who died in a car accident.

on that note, a different Brian Reid was at nationals this year, and had to play Rob first round...

I saw that in the final standings, and kinda freaked out a little.  I was a good friend of the Brian Reid who died, and still miss him.

For those who didn't have the opportunity to get to know Brian, I'll quote this post from a long time ago.

Brian Reid was a good friend to me and many others in the Redemption community.  He was a youth pastor in WV and later in Indianapolis.  At both places he build up a Redemption playgroup that would travel to many tournaments.  In fact, he was very helpful to me when I was first starting to hold tournaments and build my playgroup here at Oakdale.

He was an extremely generous trader with many of my students, which I always appreciated.  It helped them to get many cards that they would not have been able to get otherwise.  He also was generous with his strategy tips and deck ideas, which was also very helpful due to the fact that he was a talented player and had much more experience than we did.

Unfortunately, he and his wife died in a car wreck last year, and they will be greatly missed.

Here is a link that reported the accident...

Hard to believe that it has been over two years since the accident (5/1/2008).
