We are starting to get through the season, whats everyone think now?
Yanks Twinkies got same Record,at least had the same W-L.
-
I don't think any one team has really shown themselves to be definite playoff teams. However, Tampa Bay has been really good and even though they have the Yankees to deal with I would say they atleast make the playoffs as a wild card. The AL West is crazy this year, each team does good for a few games then slumps. It will be tight to the very end.

The NYY don't have Johnny Damon any more ,so thats at least one power hitter gone :prayer:. The Baltimore Orioles are having one of their worst starts ever. Maybe the Phillies will make another world series apperance.
-
I made the following predictions before SPRING TRAINING started ;)
NYY over Minny in 5
BoSox over Angels in 4
NYY over BoSox in 5
Philly over Rox in 3
Dodgers over Cards in 5
Dodgers over Philly in 4
Dodgers over NYY in 6
Other predictions:
AL MVP: Longoria (Runner Up: Miggy)
NL MVP: Pujols (Runner Up: Fielder)
NL CYA: Halladay (Runner Up: Nolasco)
AL CYA: King Felix (RUnner Up: Liriano)
AL MOY: Wakamatsu (Runner Up: Gardy)
NL MOY: Bobby Cox (Runner Up: Colletti)

has our twins ever beat NYY in even one game in the playoffs?
-
Probably not since 04
-
Probably not since 04
Hmm .. Did not think it was that long ago, thought it was two years ago.
-
It could be, but is unlikely beings the Twins weren't in the playoffs two years ago.

Yeah,thats true.
-
The NYY don't have Johnny Damon any more ,so thats at least one power hitter gone
Robinson Cano, dont'cha know?
Granderson, Gardner, Nick Johnson and Thames. We lost Damon b/c his agent is selfish, but got 3 new younger, good hitters, and with Gardner and Cano filling their shoes up we are better than last year.
Along with Swisher moving up in the lineup and hitting better, also the pitching rotation is stronger than last year with the addition of Aceves, and Vazquez.
I say NY for a repeat. Rays are doing good now, as are the Mets, and Nationals are not even doing bad, so I would not judge by this early in the season to say who goes to the playoffs. It will probably be the same teams that always make it, Dodgers, Cardinals, Yanks, Astros, Phillies, Angels, Red Sox, yada yada you know.
-
We lost Damon b/c his agent is selfish
LOL. That was hilarious xD
IMO, the team with the highest chance of winning the WS is indeed the Yankees. That being said, I wouldn't say they have above a 50% chance of winning, therefore they probably won't win. Lets hope for that ;).
I didn't see a lot of moves that would really "change" playoff teams TBH. Its almost surely going to be NYY, BoSox, Minny, LAA, LAD, Philly, Rox, and Pujols. Mariners, White Sox, Rangers, Rays, and SanFran all have a slim chance. DET, NYM, and maybe Cincy? all have a VERY long shot.
-
Cincy looks good for the first few weeks, and then they generally fall apart right before the All-Star Break, and continue the massive plunge after that. As a life-long Reds Fan I've gotten used to it :)
-
Cincy is going to finish near .500 this year. Mark my words....
-
where did damon go?
-
We've finished near 500 most years :) The last .500 season we had was in 2000, since then .450 is right around where we've finished every year. But I agree, I could see a +500 season this year. (If Bruce starts hitting in 08 form again :) )
Damon plays for the Tigers.
-
Oh, nevermind. I was thinking of the Nationals.
The Reds are going to play .00617283951 ball. (Going 1-161)
-
That'd be a neat trick, considering They're sitting pretty at .500 (11-11) right now :)
-
Its almost surely going to be NYY, BoSox, Minny, LAA, LAD, Philly, Rox, and Pujols.
wyn.
-
With all the terrible umps recently, Selig is going to extend the abilities of replay and demand all games this season that had questionable calls be replayed. The Reds will have to replay 11 games (their eleven wins), and lose all of them. They will then go on the worst losing streak ever in the major leauges, 158 games, until winning one game against Los Pedredores de Mexico thanks to Cy Baker's wonderful performance.
(Selig will change the divisions mid season)
-
Worst umpires strikezone for the year easily goes to the guy who did the opening day game for the M's and A's. At one point there were 5 pitches that hit right in the middle of the strikezone and he only called 2 a strike
-
A few days ago, Detroit v. Twinkies, the home plate ump was awful too. They'd be missing 7, 8 inches off the plate and still get the strike called. Liriano could have tried to intentionally walked everyone and got a perfect game with 27 Ks.
There was also that extra inning game where Rauch blew his first save.... the ump wanted to go home so he called a runner out on second to end the game, despite being clearly safe by 6 inches.

Yeah,I was't sure why the umps were doing such a horrible job,the umps at the red sox orioles game were okay, but they could have made better calls.

My Dodgers are just AWFUL! They lose at home starting their best pitcher against some nobody from the worst NL team the past ten years (Pirates) and get shut out?!?!? Ugh! Where's Manny when you need him?

I don't watch alot of dodger's games, but I do know they have alot of talent, and will probaly staighten out during the later season and at least make the play-offs.
-
Tampa Bay Rays are looking "Great".18-5 is their current record for the season.I think if their pace keeps up,and if they don't have any major injuries, they might make a World Series appearance, possibly win the World Series. But the New York Yankees don't have the Ray's amazing record, but they have a great team, and will be a tough opponent. The Red Sox have a decent pitching staff and they have good hitters as well. This should be a good season.
:bump:
-
I didn't realize Zimmerman was back in the lineup today, so I had him on the bench. He went 3 for 4 with 2 HR...
I fail.
EDIT: I also mistaked this for the fantasy baseball thread.

That is not a full sentence, nor does it contain any capital letters. You were probably trying to say: The past tense of mistaken is mistook, not mistaked.

So they have,The NYY are the known as the team with the most steroid use in MLB history. The Rays might not make the play-offs,but they sure will be a tough team at the end of the season.
-

Giambi, A-Rod, Clemens, anyone else? I think the next team has like 2 players. It's not a overwhelming amount and we only kept one player, and those rumors were from high school.
-
Yes,I still don't like players who are cheating, hit 50 somthin home runs in a season, and basically get away with it.
-
You forgot Denny Neagle, Jason Grimsley, Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch, Mike Stanton, David Justice, and more.
(I'm not sure if everyone on that list took steroids. Those are the Yankees that I know were suspected of taking steroids, one or two might be clean....)
Oh, and every other Yankee except Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano.
To be honest, I expect the Yankees to be the best team every year. They only had $90M more than the phillies last year.....
-

Thank,forgot about them ::)

A-Rod is the one Yankee who I think should be banned from the MLB,but the Yankees don't care what he does,as long as he hits his 500. batting average and is not caught doing steroids.
-

Taking steroids in high school is cheating in the MLB?
A-Rod is the one Yankee who I think should be banned from the MLB,but the Yankees don't care what he does,as long as he hits his 500. batting average and is not caught doing steroids.
Yankees don't care...? They have some of the most respectable players in baseball. They have never had any drama, bad publicity, or negativity outside of the ball club, or in public eye. The Yankees drop players, or when they get players they make sure they are well behaved, and well groomed.
Oh, and every other Yankee except Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano.
Why do you hate on the most historical, best team, not in baseball, in sports period?
They only had $90M more than the phillies last year.....
The Yankees actually went down the past years in their team salary, the Phillies, Red Sox, actually most teams in general went up a good percentage, Yankees were in the minority for going down. The main reason they are so high is because of the few high contracts, and Roger Clemens and Jason Giambi's old contracts. Their payroll will start going down every year with their younger players and less need to trade.
-
Why do you hate on the most historical, best team, not in baseball, in sports period?
Wow, thats some audacity... I seriously hope you're joking.
I dislike the Yankees for many reasons
-The Evil Empire tends to promote a fair-weather and arrogant fan
-They attempt to win by simply outspending everyone else
-(Many of) their coaches give steroids to player at an alarmingly shocking rate (much higher than anyone else)
-They steal talent and "home favorites" of any small market team, using said money tactic.
Need I go on?

Even factoring old contracts out, they will still be spending far more than any other team. Need I bring up Teixeira, CC Sabathia, Burnett, etc...?
-
on a side note, the Packers could be considered the best team in sports period, but I hate them too. pretty sure both Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees are so evil, they have CATS for mascots.
-
"Taking steroids in high school is cheating in the MLB" ? A-Rod has been doing steroids till mid 08,he admitted and was then fined and suspended.
Everyone besides Cano, and Jeter have taken steroids,so no wonder they set the records for wins vs losses, their pitching staff is the only thing that is mostly clean, they may have cleaned themselves up,but THEY ARE CHEATERS! TAKING STEROIDS,they have won all these games
1.good pitching staff
2.all the drugged players.
I'm sure if the Phillies,or the orioles could do a 100-62 season if all their players were on steroids, easily, home run, here home run there.
The Yankees for the most part like the Red Sox earn their money fairly, mostly because they always have sell outs, same with the Red Sox,the only reason I dont like the Yankees is because of all the steroid use,yes ALL OF THE STEROID USE,but fans will usally stick with their home team through thick or thin.
Hopefully, they may play fair one day.
-
Everyone besides Cano, and Jeter have taken steroids,
I posted that jokingly. Yes, an insane amount of Yankees were roiding: Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Andy Pettite, Ivan Rodriguez, Matt Lawton, Kevin Brown, Denny Neagle, Mike Stanton, David Justice, Randy Velarde, Rondell White, Chuck Knoblauch, Jason Grimsley, Glenallen Hill, Ron Villone, Kyle Farnsworth, Jose Canseco, etc, but you have to remember many were clean (hopefully): Jeter, Williams, Rivera, and Posada.
their pitching staff is the only thing that is mostly clean, they may have cleaned themselves up,but THEY ARE CHEATERS!
I disagree. Pitchers roid up a lot more than hitters.
1.good pitching staff
2.all the drugged players.
I'm sure if the Phillies,or the orioles could do a 100-62 season if all their players were on steroids, easily, home run, here home run there.
You don't need roids to hit a home run in Yankee Stadium. That place is a wind tunnel, my great great great great great grandma could hit a homerun there. And shes dead.

Almost every team has roiders. The last clean WS might be waay back in the 80s (maybe 1991? I'm not sure if Romero was roiding by then). I just don't like the Yankees for the reasons I listed above. Many Yankees fans just hop on board because they're winning. They're always winning, which help leads to their financial success, which they in turn spend so they're always winning.

The Evil Empire tends to promote a fair-weather and arrogant fan
Personally, I find Red Sox fans much more obnoxious, and when they won, they were much more arrogant.
-They attempt to win by simply outspending everyone else
Not true at all. They buy/trade for players they need. They do big trades also. Then again it is the New York Yankees, look at the crowds the games bring in, the fan base, all the apparel, so many fans makes it to where the club can spend money. But seriously, all anyone every does is say the Yankees only buys championships and players. Once the Red Sox started spending more money they won the World Series, no one hated on them, when the Cardinals paid for Pujols, Twins and Mauer... The Yankees do have a few big contracts but the games still need to be played, and no one really said anything about the Yankees until they won last year. You team can easily go out and spend money, but the owner won't. George is from a very wealthy family and goes out and gets what his team needs. When Giambi left they needed a good hitting, gold glove first baseman, the pitching staff fell apart a few years ago, and that has been a work in progress. They have not just spent all this money in one year, they progressively get what they need.
-(Many of) their coaches give steroids to player at an alarmingly shocking rate (much higher than anyone else)
Can you prove this, or show me something to look at where the coaches where actually giving HARMFUL or steroids that would be considered cheating, and not just minor ones.
-They steal talent and "home favorites" of any small market team, using said money tactic.
Need I go on?
Not true at all. Contracts go up and Yankees offer them a deal, yes it might be more but also players want to go to the NYY and play for the pinstripes, it is a great organization and players know they can do great there.
Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Andy Pettite, Ivan Rodriguez, Matt Lawton, Kevin Brown, Denny Neagle, Mike Stanton, David Justice, Randy Velarde, Rondell White, Chuck Knoblauch, Jason Grimsley, Glenallen Hill, Ron Villone, Kyle Farnsworth, Jose Canseco
Majority of those guys came from the Mitchell report and were never actually found guilty, and what type of steroid they used. Also not all those players were taking steroids while on the Yankees. A-Rod for example, was with Rangers in 03 when he tested positive. Also this is over a stretch of how many years? Some of these guys didn't play for the Yankees since back in the early 90's when steroid rules were a little different.
Just for clarification, both of my parents are from NY so I am a real NY fan, not a band wagon.
-
I did some more research after I posted and most of those players, like I thought, were with the Yankees for 1-2 years. Only Giambi, Clemens, Andy, Stanton, and Valarde, played for more that 2 yrs. Also of those just mentioned, Velarde, Stanton, Andy, and Clemens, re joined the Yankees which is when they were on the report. Their steroid usage could have came from numerous other sources, or previous clubs.
-
Possibly,still
Yankees= Steroid,overpaid cheating players.

-
But seriously, all anyone every does is say the Yankees only buys championships and players.
Maybe because they do.
Once the Red Sox started spending more money they won the World Series, no one hated on them
That's not the way I remember it. People didn't hate on them for a little bit just because they had gone for so long without winning (the "curse" and all). People's sympathy gave them a pass for a year or so, but after that people hate on the Red Sox almost as much as the Yankees.
Just for clarification, both of my parents are from NY so I am a real NY fan, not a band wagon.
I agree your a true fan, but I also think that your fandom has blinded your objectivity a bit. Personally I don't root for any team since I don't even like Baseball that much. But I think a lot of people dislike the economics of MLB. Money may not guarantee a championship, but lack of money guarantees that you won't win one.

WOW! Another perfect game. Its ugly Halladay is getting waaay more attention than Braden, though.
Cain also threw 9 IP 1 hit 0 walk. So close to a perfect game...
-
Yeah, this year has sure felt like some insane pitching - Ubaldo's No-no, two perfects, Cains masterpiece, and a smattering of other dazzling performances, various 1-hitters etc.
-
Who has the best W-L record?
-
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=300602106 (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=300602106)
This is ugly. I can't keep watching baseball with these umps. Worse than basketball.
Also, baseball is in trouble. I go to a game to see some balls hit into the stands, maybe a steal or two. I don't want to see two people play catch for two hours, especially if I have to pay $50. Players need to take steroids again.
-
+1 I was watching. I'm no genius - But even I could tell that was an out. And even if it was that close, the benefit of the doubt should totally go towards the pitcher. Additionally - INSTANT REPLAY!!!! Even if MLB isn't using it. The crew chief should have said, hey man we messed up, lets go take a look and save some face.
I'll be very interested to see any statement from the MLB on this.
-
LOL GAIS THE UMP WAS RITE OLOLOLOLOL. BUT U SAW BRADEEEEEEN N HALIIDAMIAY U HAZ ENUF
Who was the ump that messed up? If it was Jim Joyce or Angel whateverhisnameis I'm going to scream.
-
It was Jim Joyce actually.......
-
Ugh... Joyce is the worst umpire, by far. Missing the occasional close call is perfectly acceptable, but doing it on a regular basis isn't okay. Even for a little leauge team. Sometimes I (and I'm sure many others) wonder if he just has vendettas... against 13 different teams....
He should have been fired a long time ago.
-
I am SOOOOOOOOOO ticked off at this ump right now I can't even see straight! All I know is Bud Selig ought to go in and reverse the call. He has the power to do so. There are unwritten rules for umps, too, and this Joyce just broke one even more egregious than A-Fraud running over the mound. JOYCE NEEDS TO BE FIRED!!!
>:(
-
JOYCE NEEDS TO BE FIRED!!!
Three years ago >:c
-
I forgive Jim Joyce.
-
I slept on the issue at hand and feel much better today. here is what I posted on the Big League Stew blog at Yahoo.com reagrding whether Bud Selig should change the outcome to a perfect game:
This is a change that Bud Selig can safely administer. Why? It doesn't change the result of the game, i.e. win or loss. Several times during a season offical box scores are changed, e.g. errors to hits, doubles to singles, etc. They change the stats of those players involved but do not change the result of the game. Bud should change this game to be a perfect game for Galarraga and clearly specify the reasoning. This will be enough to prevent any issues with playoff games.
Regarding Joyce, I feel so bad for him right now. I have umped many baseball games. I have made some bad calls. I am human. But there wasn't a replay to show my bad calls. As a result, I have stood by 100% of my calls in official capacities. Of course, that doesn't mean I haven't talked with my fellow umps about such calls. Umps, including Joyce, should look at this game as one of those once-in-a-lifetime occurences and continue to stand 100% behind their judgement calls. They have a tough job. The fact that Joyce became so emotional and admitted his error of judgement reveals the enormity of the situation.
Finally, precedent has been set in the past by Fay Vincent and other commissioners who have gone and changed a highly visible stat such as this one, namely reversing no-hitters.
Baseball will survive this whether it's changed or not. But I can tell you this, I told my son and will tell my future grandchildren and Lord willing, great-grandchildren, that Armando Galarraga was the 3rd pitcher to throw a perfect game in 2010, and the 21st overall.
-
im a pirate fan................... we aren't doing too good! lol any others like me?
-
Reviving this thread just to say that the American League East is potent this year. The Toronto Blue Jays are in fourth place, but their 33-25 record puts them on par with the first place team in every other division in baseball. In fact, they would be in first place in at least one other division.
-
My Dodgers are starting to impress even me. :D
-
The Blue Jays were off to like a 30-15 start or something crazy last year. I just want to see if Baltimore is able to lose less than 120 games ;).
(I also want to see Drew Butera, Brendan Harris, and Matt Tolbert race for a .001 batting average)
-
Yanks for the win! Been a Yank fan my whole life, and I am happy to know they have a great chance to repeat.. What about Granderson's grand slam tonight? Dang that was awesome!
-
I'm a die hard Yanks fan, but last month was embarrassing. They had a tough schedule, Red Sox, Tampa Bay, then the Twins, and could not come out with a win in any of the series. Although this month is different, yet they are playing Indians, Orioles, and teams like that.
-
What about Strasburg? 14 Ks, the 2nd most strikeouts this season...
Kirk
-
What about Strasburg? 14 Ks, the 2nd most strikeouts this season...
Kirk
THAT was impressive! This is turning out to be the year of the rookie. Mike Stanton of the Marlins was 3-5 in his debut. I might have to trade for all the fabulous rookies in fantasy: Strasburg, Stanton, Heyward, Castro, etc.
Oh, and my Dodgers are in 1ST PLACE, baby!
-
That is insane. Only Joel Zumaya is supposed to be able to throw 103.... Strasburg's velocity is probably still going up, too...
-
The most impressive part of Strasburg's grand opening was his poise under the intense scrutiny and excitement of the moment. He gives up a two-run home run, but instead of falling apart, he actually strikes out the side and mows them down the rest of the way.
-
Yanks will be fine.. Every team has a bad month or two during the regular season! No worries, Yanks have a great shot at the title come playoff time!
-

YAY!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

How about this rookie team:
C - Buster Posey
1B - Ike Davis, Justin Smoak
2B - Neil Walker
3B - David Freese
SS - Starlin Castro, Ian Desmond
OF - Jason Heyward
OF - Mike Stanton
OF - Brennan Boesch
OF - Austin Jackson
SP - Stephen Strasburg
SP - John Ely
SP - Mike Leake
SP - Jaime Garcia
SP - Wade Davis
RP - Drew Storen
HOLY COW! Steve, did you see that? We can field AN ALL-STAR TEAM!!!....OUT OF ROOKIES!!!! :o :o :o
-
Aren't the Giants playing Posey primarily as a first baseman? He's got 8 games there, and only two under the gun by my count.
-

You're right but all fantasy leagues have him listed at least as a catcher. Good job, by the way picking him up in our league. You got him just before I did. He's great for fantasy leagues because you can stick him at catcher and get 1B stats.
Yeah, SF is pro-fantasy in my book. Last year, I had Sandoval at catcher even though he hardly played there. If it wasn't for that, Sean would have won the league last year.
And as for a rookie 2B, I think we'll go with Neil Walker of the Pirates.
-
Yeah, I saw his first day's stats, Knew Catcher was a weak point, and grabbed him.
-
Knew Catcher was a weak point
..... Even if you grab the best catcher in the game, who his .300 with 2 home runs.............
-
Well, not weak in general, but on my team.
-
Catcher is weak in general. I was just pointing out that Mauer has failed me. I'm glad I don't own a Mauer jersey.
-
Yeah, it looks like Mauer and Morneau have traded jerseys. :o
-
Nah. Morneau hits .164 with 3 RBIs and 1 HR after the all star game, seems like he always has a crazy start.
Although, I've been complaining about the Mauer contract since it was signed (from a Twins fan!??! what!?!). Guess it was kind of hypocritical to draft him.

Every team has a bad month or two during the regular season! No worries, Yanks have a great shot at the title come playoff time!
This is part of why the regular season in Baseball is worthless. If you can stink for 2 months of the year and lose tons of games, and still have a "great shot at the title", then why bother even having the regular season?
-

That is just part of having a playoff system. It doesn't matter as much who has the best record, but more who is performing better at the end of the regular season. The AL West champion this year will be lucky to have a winning record.
-

This is part of why your opinion about baseball is worthless. If you can stink up baseball threads with your hatred for the game, and still have a "great shot" at being an "Elder" on the Message Boards, then why even bother posting?
-
I'm curious as to the other part of why is opinion is worthless. I'd also add a smiley to your post, unless you were being serious, in which case I think you're out of line - The Professor does alot for this board, and he's entitled to his opinion about baseball.
-
;)
-
Thanks :) I figured you were joking, but sometimes I can't tell with you. Perhaps its because I haven't met you in person, We shall need to remedy this, will you be at nationals this year?
-
If you can stink up baseball threads with your hatred for the game
Actually this particular opinion is not limited to baseball. I would also say that the regular season in pro basketball is basically worthless for the same reason.
Compare this to college basketball, college football, or pro football. Almost no team is going to lose all their games for a couple months in any of those sports and make it into the postseason.
;)
Whew, I was wondering if you were serious too :)
-
will you be at nationals this year?
Unfortunately, no. Even though it will be held less than 50 miles from where I grew up, I will not be able to make the trip from Florida since I start school on the Monday following Natz.
I'm curious as to the other part of why is opinion is worthless.
1. He's not really a professor.
2. He uses red brigade.
3. He uses performance enhancing drugs to help him win card games.
Perhaps its because I haven't met you in person...
Unfortunately for the Professor, he has. ;)

Actually, it was a joy to meet and spend some time with you and your family. I'd love to return the favor sometime if you ever head up this way :)

Thanks :) I figured you were joking, but sometimes I can't tell with you. Perhaps its because I haven't met you in person, We shall need to remedy this, will you be at nationals this year?
I have not met YMT in person either, but I immediately was busting a gut on that one! :rollin:
But on a serious note, the MLB regular season is the most relevant part of the entire season in ANY sport. It's ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-TWO games, and goes on for half a year! It's a marathon race! Of course players and teams will go through slumps, but in the end whoever survives goes to the playoffs. As a traditionalist, I would really like to see the post-season return to just being the championship and world series, and get rid of the wild card.
It's like Paul said, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Lets play a game of over/under!
