The iPad.... will it shine or bomb?

http://www.apple.com/

They finally released their rumored tablet PC... Think it'll do well?

Personally, I think it won't do so hot because its basicly a huge iPhone, with few added benefits.

Pros that I see:
The $30 infinate dataplan is pretty nice
Nice screen

Cons I see:
Close to $900 for the 3G version with a mere 64gb of hard drive space? I can get a sub $400 laptop with more memory and probably more functionality than this.
Very odd size
smudge/scratches become a problem
only an upgraded iphone OS
No physical keyboard

All in all, I'd rather get a normal laptop with a full fledged OS, more memory, faster processors and graphics, a full keyboard, and the ability to protect its own screen.

A lot of the things you say are accurate, but a lot of parallel arguments could be - and were - made about the difference between the iPod and other competing MP3 players of the day.

Two big advantages Apple has going for it is promoting the user experience, and the percentage of people who will purchase anything with a piece of fruit on the box.  Our graphics and marketing guy brought in a package of mandarin oranges to work last week because he thought Steve Jobs was trying to make inroads in the produce market.

This definitely isn't a laptop replacement, but you can kiss the Kindle/Nook goodbye.  The ebook reader is dead, the $499 tablet is in.

This is the perfect kitchen computer.  It has the great calendar, mail, browser, and media.  It can dock but it uber portable.  People with a desktop + this will be very happy.  It's a bit too similar to the iPhone though.

And why ON EARTH with a 1 gHz processor is there no multitasking!?  That's needed (and can be supplied from the jailbreak community.)

I think this is going to do really really well.  The entry price of $499 is amazing; it will become the kitchen/media computer of choice.  I don't need one (laptop + iPod Touch) but I think my mom would love one (just a desktop).

LOL! The second point aside, what major reason is there for me to buy this?

I'd rather just buy this thing: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5290617&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs

dual core processor, dedicated video card, bigger hard drive, physical keyboard, bigger screen....

They are different things.  The iPad isn't a PC, it is for people who don't have an iPhone or laptop, people who want a portable kitchen computer, or students who want an ereader.  You (and I) don't fit into any of those groups.  We don't want it, but there defintely are people who will gobble this up.  The Kindle (a single purpose device easily emulated by a program) has done really well, this will leave it in the dust.

The Ipad is an educational tool. Imagine the potential of placing Ipads in every high school class room. Electronic textbooks, emailed class notes, and youtube use in a personal way screams awesome and useful to me.

Again, you're comparing this tablet to something you believe to be in a similar category but of better design.  You're tech savvy enough to see what you want.  Not everyone is.  Even those who are, will take name-brand hardware over a superior product from a company they've never heard of (and yes, you and I have heard of Asus, but unless it's HP, Dell or Apple, most people haven't).

This was the entire reason for my first point.  People will buy the brand and they will buy the user experience.  You will buy something that's more powerful.  That's you.  The first point shows from history that you will give Asus another $500 and the populace will give Steve Jobs another money vault to swim in.

Just like the iPhone, it has a YouTube app which supports watching Youtube in SD and HD.  The website doesn't work, the app does very well.

Regardless, no flash means a lot of websites will be broken or completely nonfunctional.

If you use Chrome or Safari, you can play YouTube videos using the h.264 codec.

Ah, I dont have any current apple products so I wouldn't know  :D

In other news, this thing utterly destroys the iPad in terms of functionality for the price:

That device only has 5 hours of battery.  A tablet needs enough power to work though an entire day.  Also, lack of an apps store and higher price hurt it in comparisons.

I personally would rather use an iPod touch than the iPad, as a 10" device is pretty big to simply carry around.

Higher price? So... you can have your oversized 16gb iphone for $499, while I'll take a Windows 7 mini computer with 60GB for $50 more. App store... who needs that. Seeing as it runs windows 7, you can just download and install anything you can on a normal PC.

If I had to buy a tablet, I'd go with the archos over the ipad in a heartbeat.

Nothing I have ever used on a PC (aside from minesweeper) will a) run on that processor, and b) work with a stylus.  Additionally, the version of Win7 on there can't run just anything, as it is not a full version of Windows.  Also, an open OS goes back to a need for virus scans, a painful experience on such a slow processor.

8 gigs is still enough for me to carry music, ebooks, movies, etc around with me, especially considering it is flash memory.

Im sure you can run a lot more useful stuff on the archos than on the ipad, seeing as most of the apps now are old iphone apps... YAY i can have a 10" flashlight!

the ipad screen is way too big for me too...if i wanted something that big and mobile, i would just get a laptop (can also do more things). if it has less specs, then it also better be less in size as well, in my book. the archos 9 series tablets have the perfect specs to meet its very mobile size.

I don't think you're hearing me on the correlation between functionality and sales when it comes to Apple.

Apple has its entire iWork suite (comparable to MS Office) able to run in a fully-functioning form on the iPad.  Not a single program in the Office suite will run on the Archos; instead you are stuck with the tacky, limited Lotus Symphony suite.

Additionally, I can find very few worthwhile apps (Skype, IM, email excluded) that will run on 1GB of RAM, a weird screen resolution, and a stylus.  iPad has access to 140,000 plus the many new apps that will be available once it releases in March (if you have a minute, check out the middle of the keynote, which shows a very impressive demo of new games from EA and gameloft).

Plus, there are many features that are useful beyond games.  eBook store & reader.  3G option.  Multi-touch.  And a whole slew of developers that hope to take advantage of this device.

So basically it's a more expensive, less-powerful laptop with a touch screen.
