I'd say top players have been playing to win since the game was created and they will continue until they quit playing the game.
However, I disagree entirely that it's about combos. The whole "Nothing I can do" is lame, yes, which is why TGT is bad, but Disciples are stoppable at least...mostly...

And of course I have the ultra-competitive players who end up in fellowship anyway after a much heated tourney --- sharing pizza, prayer, and Mountain Dew.
It all is well, my Redemption family --- all well.
You need to re-evalurate this game if you see it as no-longer fun quit.
It dies. Which I don't wanna see.
