To bring some other perspective into this, I played ROOT Packs for a month after the cross-over, and lost the deciding game to MKC largely because of lop-sided drawing. Did I complain about it? No. Nesfedder's a cool guy who I enjoy talking with and fondly remember for his escalator escapades at my first Natz (which I took 3rd at).

What did I do? Get mad and stop? No, I moved on to ROOT RNRS and am so far undefeated. I do not use Speed, FbtNB, or TGT (though TGT is in my deck, it's not the same thing). When I play ROOT games, I more often than not use my A deck (which is fun to play), but I've also used other decks (including a deck that revolves around a 6 card combo, how is that not fun?). After each game, I'll be chatting with my opponent, sometimes over an hour, and we talk about what could make each of our decks better, what we have to watch out for, and pretty much any subject we share an interest in.

Every Redemption tournament I've ever been to has been a massive fun-and-fellowship-fest, even though I play Spike at tournaments and go for the throat (I lost the deciding game of the 2008 nationals against Mirejaavoebvaiefbiaebfaski, which would have given me a Natz first had I won). That same tournament, I spent hours playing Cutthroat Caverns with some very good friends I never would have met without Redemption, played an epic game of accidental "bad scrabble," and enjoyed evenings partying in a tent out back of Schaef's church, not to mention the worship service there where I realized Schaef is a musician. At a SE Regionals, the last thing I did before leaving was chase Kirk around the entire church yelling "give me back my shoe!" This is the same tournament I would have won T2 2-Player if we had followed the rules and ended the game at timeout, rather than finishing it (which gave Kirk the time he needed to beat me for the win...btw, I was using his own deck).

Maybe I've just had abnormally good experiences. Maybe my perspective is not the norm. But Redemption has provided me with a fun, fellowshippy part of my life I never would have experienced without it. And as a Spike player than hangs out with other Spike players after-hours and enjoys it, I have to say that though it's true the game has never been better than it is now with the Di cards, the community has never been stronger or more fun, which is what keeps me playing through my SoG being Discarded by Beheaded after my Beheaded discarded a LS.

In summary, I love you guys, and I love this game for introducing me to you. Di was the best set ever released, because it fixed the meta, but more importantly, because I spend more time with fellow Redemption enthusiasts. I may complain (sometimes a LOT) about some bad ruling or OP card that really should have been caught, but I've seen enough evidence of edification and fellowship to believe that what Rob is doing with this game is of God and a blessing to many lives.

/soapbox
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

based on my extensive experience in root, i understand where you're coming from ymt. while it was fun for awhile, it eventually degraded into games becoming more and more serious and everyone losing touch with how fun this game is supposed to be. the game was no longer fun for me in root, so i decided to switch over to packs, which has players that dont care whether they win or not. root just wasnt worth the stress anymore, and i must say i feel a whole lot better about the game ever since being in packs.

The good news is that according to Matthew 19:30, I will be placing first in the Redemption tournaments in heaven.  ;)

Sorry to hear about the trophy.  :-\

Maybe I've just had abnormally good experiences. Maybe my perspective is not the norm.

In all fairness, it may be me that has had abnormally bad experiences, and my perspective is not the norm.

if you see it as no-longer fun quit.

You're right. I quit. Thanks for the encouragement.

YMT, have you ever come to nationals?

Also, you are one of the people I enjoy most on the boards, so please don't leave for reasons like that, because you're making a positive impact on fun.

Speaking of Redemption Cards in Heaven, I had a dream about that once...Red and Orange were the best brigades...this was before Orange was released. Red was as bad as ever though.

YMT it seems you are quite bitter. I have played ROOT even got top 4:I got KILLED in the Top 4 but I still had fun You lost sight of the reason:Fun. Why? They picked you and other non-pro players apart which allows you to lose sight of the goal:fun. I kept my eyes on that goal. You need to re-evalurate this game if you see it as no-longer fun quit.
You clearly have not read and/or understood anything that YMT has said in this thread.  When a player such as YMT has a discussion like this you can believe it is not because of bitterness.  Your comments are misguided and ignorant at best.

The online games we have, in my experience, have never been anywhere near as fun as actually going to tournaments and seeing people and interacting with them.  I would definitely not put very much stock in online Redemption as far as judging the fellowship and fun aspect.
May you prosper greatly!

I estimate it will cost $50,000 to hire Lady GaGa. If we get 250 people, thats $200 each. This is more possible than you thing, guys.

I hardly ever play at tournaments anyway since I am usually the host. I have vicarious frustration through my playgroups. I'll still be hosting, once I can afford it again.

Christian and I almost planned it one weekend this December (but fly obviously).  I'm sure this will happen one day and so prepare for a nice spanking!

I know.  I've always know that fact.  I have never doubted it.  I guess it's going to be our full-time function in this game ...why not.  The best Redemption Jedi knights need the best trainers, you know.  Yes!!!

I just received my Disney Holiday Bonus Pass, which allows me five guests. If you come this December, I can get you both in to a Disney park, water park, or DisneyQuest. I still have a guest room available here at the house.

FYI, you'll have to keep your hands to yourself while you're here.  ;)

Unfortunately my players are being trained by Jar-Jar.

Tell her she is in my prayers as your whole family is, my bro --- in my prayers.

We appreciate your prayers. She is still on bedrest, and will be starting a new medication today. The previous medication did not stop the contractions. At this point, if she goes into labor, the baby will be in ICU for the next few months until its lungs develop. That is, of course, assuming that it is God's Will for the baby to survive the birth.

Hey Tim,

It seems like most of the other Redemption players here don't quite get the point you are trying to make, but the important ones do get it! :P  It does get annoying sometimes when you play against the same old deck configurations that are considered to be "the best."  I want you to know that there are still players out there (And here) who are dedicated to enjoying the game simply for the fellowship, fun, and Biblical context.  Jon and Andrew still make decks that are composed of cards from the related passages of scripture and I still try out different configurations and combinations of brigade colors to see the results.  True, we get competitive sometimes, but we always try and have a good time and make each game a new experience.  Soon we'll be saying adios once more to KoT, Philly Garrison, TFG, and Emp Nero, but they'll come back again in the future lol.  I hope you're not serious about quitting because your knowledge and expertise, as well as your fun-loving attitude inspired our playgroup to grow, and we still think about the fun times we've had so far.  I'd sure love to get together with you sometime just to play some non-competitive games of Redemption with some alternative deck styles.  I'll have to see if I can free some time up for it and find a way to get up to you, but I honestly would like to do that sometime.  I just got my order in of a complete Di set and it has inspired me to try out some interesting card combos, so maybe I'll be able to come up with something you've never seen before...  We'll see though haha!!

My 8 week break from Redemption is over, and I was sure excited to come home to a District tourney, so maybe a break might do you some good.  I hope you find a way to rejuvenate your love for Redemption!!

As a tournament host, I have not seen as much of this phenomenon, mostly because a lot of the local kids play whatever decks they want to play and don't go straight for the Hot Theme of the Month, and the heavy players who show up tend to have a fair variety of strategies (though Genesis and Priests do tend to pop up a lot).  But I have long welcomed other activities during a tournament (the Extravafesticon is deliberately timed to go with the Biggest Rivalry in College Football).  One thing that interested me at past national tournaments were the extracurricular activities: Bryon introduced me to Bang!, and I have only seen a growth in off-hours gaming in the years since then.  When I hosted in 08, I made it a point to supply as many board games as I could, and we had use of the meeting room for the entire weekend, 24 hrs a day.  There can be a lot more that contributes to the atmosphere of the tournament than just the competition; by contrast, if that is your sole focus for critique, then competition is necessarily going to take up a larger part of the experience, and diminish overall fun and fellowship.

From a developer's standpoint, I am truly flummoxed.  A lot of effort has gone into taking some of the bite out of the super-powered strategies that have cropped up, as well as taking lesser themes and finding ways to make them more competitive.  I personally have campaigned for more power in musicians, Sadducees and Herods, in addition to playing an all-NT-women ignore deck (prior to TGT) and a NT angel deck that did not include the standard Captain/TSA/Mike combo.  Obviously those last two have taken significantly different directions from how I used to play them, but to this day, musicians/sads is still my favorite deck to play.

There are things that can be done to encourage or discourage certain themes, but that's only one part of the gaming meta.  There's not much to be done about people who glom on to a deck anyway, and don't get creative in their deckbuilding even when given the tools.

Most players don't have access to the 99% of cards the top players/RTS players have, and use what they have.  I've seen some fairly good defenses that won't win at Nats, but will do fine at the local level.

All the best Doms come in starter packs (NJ is a little trickier but still not terribly difficult).
