I'd say top players have been playing to win since the game was created and they will continue until they quit playing the game.  

This is not about playing to win. This is about the annihilation of the "fellowship" part of Redemption. If that has become obsolete for the purpose of winning, then I have no more need for Redemption.

However, I disagree entirely that it's about combos. The whole "Nothing I can do" is lame, yes, which is why TGT is bad, but Disciples are stoppable at least...mostly...

I have not plunged headlong into the Disciples cards yet, but with what has been said on the boards, there seem to be similar problems. I was generalizing "COMBO," but referring specifically about the "nothing you can do" decks. I apologize for the confusion.

Thad takes way too long to set up. A good defense can bring them down...probably...

I haven't played many disciples decks yet, since my playgroup has had only one tournament, and most of the people didn't have many disciples. People are going both ways on this issue though, and I agree with Pol.

I have seen WAY more diverse decks doing well in Di than in any other expansion. I have a White/Herods deck, two combo decks, an Abom deck, a Disciples/Manasseh deck, a 102 card deck, a side-battle deck, a Prophets/Babylonians deck, a TGG (Teal Gold Green) deck, and a recursion deck that all work very well. I've also recently faced a decktype I've never seen before that has a lot of potential. FbtNB decks are also good (though I don't use one) and CTB can also perform very well.

Compare this to last season's viable strats: Speed, TGT, FbtNB, and Abom.

Redemption has never been better. The only people I see whining about T1 are those who either: haven't actually played it all that much since Di, refuse to adapt to the new game paradigm, or have had to play too many bogus huge decks on RTS (this group of people I don't blame, my philosophy is that a 100+ card deck should be as fast or faster than a 63 card deck, which my 102 is).
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Just because you see the same cards in t2 doesn't mean everything is the same. Sure, 70% of t2 decks will have one or more Uzzahs. But all the defenses are very independent and unique. Tons of t2 decks will have TSA or Cap. But there is still room to do something unique.

Nope. Definitely not. That takes forever, and for everybody but Bill, would cost way too much. Teams booster, however, would be awesome.

I have played competitively less often and have been teaching the game most often.

I have observed that the game is enjoyed both ultra-competitively and in pure fellowship.  I am truly blessed by both the competitive elite and the for-basic-fun-and-fellowship masses.  Both thrive well in the same Redemption home and family.

ROOT for me is the ultimate national (even international) ultra competitive arena --- it is only for those who can swallow defeat with a grain of salt --- and not quit.  It is indeed a breeding ground for future innovations in strategy.

Players can choose where they may want to be --- for me, all this is a blessing, be it ultra-competitive or not.

My advise if I may to all --- prepare built-up decks for pure fun and fellowship done the good old fashioned way.  And if you can, likewise build utlra-competitive ones as well --- we need you to invent and invent more until standard flagship strategies can be replaced more dynamically.  We have done it in the past -- we can always come up with unique designs.

I have players in their 60's who enjoy their Sealed Deck category.  I have some T1 players who have shifted to Booster Draft due to ultra-competitive decks that always trump them.  And of course I have the ultra-competitive players who end up in fellowship anyway after a much heated tourney --- sharing pizza, prayer, and Mountain Dew.

It all is well, my Redemption family --- all well.

I agree with this statement and would like to say that i have won one game in the past 5 people that i have played. HURTS. but i know it helps me to become a better player and keep me warmed up for the next tourney.

Warrior, we've played alot in the past week. When I first started playing Redemption, everytime i played Eric Largent, I always had a hard time deciding whether i should attack or not. In the same way Ive had plenty of

lost souls that you could have rescued because I had no defence, but you didnt attack. In my mind i asked "Why didnt he attack?" other times I know why you didnt attack because I had the tools to use your great defence

 against you (and this is your playing style). You need some way to protect your defence from other players. I guess this is where I talk about all the cards everyone plays with, but thats the reason why they play with them-

 because they work. I had three EC down that really stopped you from attacking me this game with your Jacob+Captain. King Manny/2khorsies, King Ahaz, and Messenger of Satan with Gates of Jerusalem. You had a

 huge defence down with multiple banding. There was no way for me to rescue as well. I had to do something to try to win so I used Bronze Laver to put my evil under b/c i knew you wouldnt attack and proceeded to play

 ET+AoC killing my own nasties but for a good cause. I didnt want to kill my guys but i needed to in order to try to pull out a win. Since then I have added a purple site and protect ls to try to help not killing my own EC's. We

 must learn from these games and use that experience to help us in becoming the best of the best.

This sentiment is exactly what makes the competitive Redemption community no fun to play against. They assume that any complaints come from people who can not handle defeat. For the record, I was using a 70-card Daniel deck that I would never have entered into an actual tournament. I chose a Daniel deck because I wanted a different offense than any of my playgroup was using, and because it was fun. I knew that it would not win consistently, if at all.

The point that so many have been making lately is not that fact that they were losing, but how they were losing.

And of course I have the ultra-competitive players who end up in fellowship anyway after a much heated tourney --- sharing pizza, prayer, and Mountain Dew.

I don't remember the "end up in fellowship anyway" part of the 2008 CT state tournament that we did together. I seem to recall leaving that night with certain people still quite angry.

It all is well, my Redemption family --- all well.

All is not well, and ignoring the problem will not make it go away. Tournament numbers will continue to dwindle until only those "ultra-competitive" players remain. Have fun with that.

YMT it seems you are quite bitter. I have played ROOT even got top 4:I got KILLED in the Top 4 but I still had fun You lost sight of the reason:Fun. Why? They picked you and other non-pro players apart which allows you to lose sight of the goal:fun. I kept my eyes on that goal. You need to re-evalurate this game if you see it as no-longer fun quit.

i think you get out of redemption as much as you put into it. if you're competitive about it, then expect to play other competitive people. if you're playing for fun, what difference does it matter if you could do nothing and lost? you werent playing seriously to begin with, so it shouldnt matter if you lose. if you dont like playing against serious players, then the only thing you can do is find other players to play with.

and i agree with reyzen totally, root is indeed the proving grounds for the best of the best. it doesnt get nearly as much respect as it should. i endured 12 consecutive months of playing with the top players to finally win it all. no winnings, no prizes, just putting your ego and pride on the line. :) i did get a trophy and recognition at nats, but the trophy came broken in the mail. :(

based on my extensive experience in root, i understand where you're coming from ymt. while it was fun for awhile, it eventually degraded into games becoming more and more serious and everyone losing touch with how fun this game is supposed to be. the game was no longer fun for me in root, so i decided to switch over to packs, which has players that dont care whether they win or not. root just wasnt worth the stress anymore, and i must say i feel a whole lot better about the game ever since being in packs.
