The MPAA and RIAA are powerful lobbies with lots of connections on Capitol Hill.  I'm hoping they get shot down, as my entire career depends on this not being passed.

You can say that again.

ya guys idt we should let the government get control of the web. i mean ya they are saying they'll stop porn and other objectional things, which is good but as some of u hav already said, "where do they draw the line?" and with their track record i dont want them having any more control over my life then they already do!

God needs to be in schools and on the web, its not worth risking it being taken off!

I just called my senator, and wrote her a message on her website.  I would encourage those of voting age to do the same.  Another fun bit of SOPA/PIPA is that if you listen to a copyrighted song on YouTube, you could be subject to a five year prison sentence.

I was reading various sites about this yesterday, and one of them (I forget which) had a comment to this effect that I found very striking:

"If you listen to a Michael Jackson song on Youtube, you could receive 5 years in prison (more than the doctor who killed him)."

Arguable truthfulness about the whole "did the doctor kill him" thing aside, the comparison is rather worrisome.

Also, I sent messages to like everyone representing any part of Wisconsin (even if they won't be voting on this, I still sent them a message).

Kinda like the fact that in some states, you need one form of ID to buy a gun, but two forms if you want to pay with a check.

Maybe because you don't have a Constitutional right to a checking account?

Guns can be used in murder. I've never heard of anyone killed with a $50 bill. (Someone will inevitably find a story somewhere on google where someone was drowned in nickels or something, and I welcome you to post that story because it would be a hilarious read, but you get my point) Do I think that ALL guns should be extremely tightely regulated? No. I would like it to be a little harder to get anything that can't be used in practical situations, such as hunting or defending yourself, but other than that I think one form of ID and a background check is okay for shot guns and pistols. If you're buying an assualt rifle or an AK-47, I am a little worried and might want to run some more checks.

Anyway the MPAA released a statement yesterday that made them look like (more of) idiots. I'm going to put it in a spoiler tag because the title of the article does contain a synonym for butt.

Spoiler (hover to show)

Funny you should blame this on Obama, who has publicly stated he'd veto the bill.

Obama not only has nothing to do with this bill, but has already stated he would veto this if it passed. People really need to start learning that congress has a lot more power that the president.

If you can teach that thing how to aim and pull the trigger then I would gladly send it to war. I think we might win based on shear intimidation.

He saying that so people won't think he's behind it. Don't you rember what Bush 41 said "Read my lips, No new taxes." He made more taxes so don't believe everything a politician says.

Just saying that he's against it cost him millions in contributions.  He's already sacrificed for this bill.

Incidentally, my father retired a few years ago.  He's had a lifelong interest in politics, and so when there was an opening at the county level, he decided to run, and won.  He also promised that he'd arrive here (my college) around 3PM on Sunday.  Should I not trust him?

/Making sweeping statements is fun!

There is a different between a candidate for president saying "No new taxes" and then realizing the he is going to have to raise taxes once he becomes president, and a president who is in office saying he won't support a bill if it gets through congress. Every (republican at least) campaigns on no new taxes, this bill isn't a party platform issue.

I said you can't always, not that you can never trust them. Those are two very different statements right there. The kind I was talking about were the washington dc politicians, not local or county ones.

I was never saying it was a party platform issue. I was going by his record do far. For example he said that within a year of his term Gitmo would be shut down, and is it shut down no it is still open.
