From the way it looked, it would seem possible for someone to just grab a spoon whenever he or she felt like it. How is one to prove he actually had four of a kind (assuming that's how you play--that's the only way I've played it) when that type of massive chaos ensues?

The decks involved are various decks my cousins' family has accumulated over the years that are no longer fit for play. From regular playing cards to Uno/Skip-Bo to strange theme decks like Camel cigarettes, they're bent, incomplete, torn, drawn on, or otherwise unplayable in any sane game.

Mr. Ope:
I don't think I have that power.

Mr. Ralstad:
The person starting the onslaught keeps his hand and proves he had the 5 of a kind afterwards. That's not shown in the video, but that proof is required, lest the round become invalidated and the scars (emotional and physical) all for naught.

By the time the game gets down to 2 players, it becomes a completely different game, so the tournament tends to end once the third place player is eliminated; the champion is the one with fewer letters at that point.

Been playing spoons since 1974. 'Course back then we called it "Donkey". I think it was invented by the Scots. They wanted to call it "goff" but then they used that named for another game they invented. As I grew through the early years, different variations were tried until we settled on spoons. (Forks, small animals, and eggs proved to be too difficult.) We generally almost always played with the 3's, 8's, 6's, 9's, 4's and Aces, to weed out those who weren't paying very close attention. In college, I introduced the game to my friends and we created a version involving a worm...but that's all I'll say about that. I do not remember the exact count of injuries but they included broken digits, lacerations, bruises, and one unkendray punch to the face. It is a time honored game and my hats off to the Myxlplyk family for making it their Thanksgiving family tradition.

You set spoons in the center of people (one less spoon than people playing--like musical chairs). Deal everyone 4 cards--> the goal is to ultimately get 4 of a kind and then to grab a spoon. After everyone has 4 cards, the dealer begins looking at each card and decides to keep it to help his 4 of a kind or to pass the card to the left. Once someone makes a grab for a spoon (when they have their 4 of a kind) then everyone is free to grab for a spoon. The person without a spoon is eliminated or gains a letter in Tim's version.

When the game gets down to 2 players then my variation takes over. First, to see a designated card and grabs the last spoon wins.

Mr. Hips:
The way that Mr. Eker described it is pretty much the way we do it, except with a junkload of decks and getting 5 of a kind. Unlike Mr. Amp's streamlined version with only a couple card types, there are a bunch of near-useless cards that get involved, like Jokers, 11s, Reverses, Draw Four Wilds, and Skip-Bos - they're not wildcards, you actually need five Jokers or five Draw Four Wilds.

Well, my dad (the baldish guy) did end up winning the tournament. He claimed the glove was more for his hand's protection than for card grip, and he received a lot of flak for having it, but I am not one to argue with results.

Hey Tim,
You may want to consider introducing the "taunting edition" to your family that I sometimes start when my group plays. Basically, everyone with a spoon taps it against a hard object to serenade the "have-not" with the song of defeat! Then you hand them a spoon in their send off.

It can be seen as ruthless and overly competitive but judging from the video...your family may enjoy it.

Oh my goodness. I have played spoons alot and it is a great game. I have played it at a Cici's in Nebraska because many customers weren't there and the employees didn't care. I also played it at camp in a class.
