Search Feature on Boards?
« on: August 15, 2012, 03:33:10 PM »

Does anyone know when the search feature will work again on the forums?

I know that we can use google searches to help find some topics but the searches I do are not very thorough - meaning only a few results come back on many occasions where I know we have tons of topics discussing the words I search by.

Thanks,
Kirk

It's been several months. I'm not even sure who's responsible to fix it anymore.

I wouldn't really expect it to get fixed any time soon now that Schaef is gone and Lord Zardeck is busy.

Is there anyone else in the Redemption community that would be willing to step up and help with something like this? Meaning someone join as an Admin to help run the boards?

I'm not sure what exactly being an admin entails, but I'm sure I can google what to do if no one else will.

I would be willing to put the time in, but I don't know how to do stuff like this.

Alex would you be willing to email Rob and ask him if you can help by being an admin? I think Rob, Schaef, and Lord Zardek were the 3 admins and now down to 2 with Rob busy.

Blake,
Thanks for offering as well. Not sure the best way to go about suggesting who should step up between you and Alex but my first thought was Alex since he raised his hand first.

I actually don't think either of them are really qualified. Don't get me wrong, I love them both to death, but I imagine whoever is in that role should already be in a role of responsibility (read:Elder) and have experience here. Talking to several other members about it at Nats, I think a lot of us thought Underwood would be a good choice as an admin. That said, such a decision is entirely up to Rob, and I don't think asking for volunteers (or even recommending anyone) is the way to go about it.

I've been running a Simple Machines Forum for a band from Tallahassee for the better part of a year. I am also experienced in PHP (the language the boards are written in). I'm not active at all on here but would be willing to volunteer my time and could easily integrate back in to the community if an admin position was offered. Not going to start playing Redemption again but can still be active on the boards.

I won't lead the campaign for myself, sorry. If you want a new admin, I won't decline if offered, but I'm not going to seek it to Rob. I don't think that's the correct way to go about it.

What's the difference between a forum developer like Zardeck and an admin? Also, are Rob and Roy the only admins?

I know Google is useful, but it should probably be someone that knows what they're doing.

In terms of what they are actually allowed to do on the boards, nothing. Zardeck's account is just a renamed admin account. However, Zardeck and I are experienced in building and maintaining web applications (such as forums) where are Rob and Roy, to my knowledge, are more or less admins in the sense that they have the power to ban people and things like that.

tl:dr; Rob and Roy have the power to ban and approve accounts, make new boards, etc. Zardeck and I have the know-how to fix search.

Thank you all for weighing in on the matter.

My thoughts are that if a pretty important feature of the boards is not working (search) and has not been for a period of time then we should find someone who can help. I would have hoped that of Lord Zardek knew how he would have already done so at this point. I will shoot him a PM in case he isn't aware of the issue.

Is Lord Zardek planning to still be involved on the boards? Meaning that he and LP both can do the same sorts of things so would we need the time of both if Lord Zardek keeps doing it?

I'm not saying I would be a good choice, nor that I should be anything either than a desperation choice, only that I'd be willing to put the time in.

If Zardeck is as active as I used to be/can be again, then I'll be the first to admin there is no need for me.

I think having an admin with experience running SMF forums who is willing to invest the time to keep forum software up to date would be great. The fact that you are no longer an active player would in some ways be a plus, since your focus would be primarily on keeping things running from a technical standpoint, while the other admins can focus on community-building in terms of the game. I would support lp as an Admin, but obviously it's Rob's call to make. I'm not sure who of the Elders/mods has substantial enough web development experience to take over Schaef's duties; I know I don't.

Okay, I should clarify some things about my "Position" on the forums. Yes, my position is essentially a re-named admin position. The difference is however, I have absolutely NO access to the internals of the server. My position as "Forum Developer" is to develop extensions, or "add-ons" that enhance the forums. Nothing I do actually modifies the forums. This was the wish of Rob and Schaefer at the time of my acceptance as Admin.

However, like lp670sv, my whole job is developing and maintaining complex systems such as this forum. I'm fully qualified to maintain the forums, and would be more than happy to. I think before I apply for full admin though, I should explain the whole situation with RC! and my "participation" with the forums.

Life hit me hard in May/June. As many of you were aware, RC! had been suddenly shutdown (unknown to me), and it's integration with the boards cause the forum to crawl at a snails pace. At the same time my main client's entire site and administration software had been shutdown also. It was soon realized that because the integration features were so popular, it had quadrupled the load on my hosting provider's servers. Because of this, they disabled my account and shut down all resources associated with it. This put a lot of pressure on me as this was the time when my client was to renew their license with me. Unfortunately in life, your business (and source of income) takes priority above and beyond personal (and volunteer) projects.

To save my self, I immediately worked out an agreement with my provider to disable the parts of RC causing the load in order to have my sites brought live again. This was an acceptable TEMPORARY solution, but a long-term course of action was necessary. I decided switch providers and go with cloud services from Amazon (which actually was helping with some of the features of RC already, in particular the Lobby system). This was a HUGE move though, and I had only 1 month to get it moved over, and during the busiest time for my clients. That's when I announced that support for RC! was terminated and that in July it would be switched offline. I needed to devote every ounce of time and effort I had to get everything moved over and stable for them.

Then the next big part of life hit me. College. I only had a month or so to prepare, and had many loose ends to tie up to be ready to go.

Finally, my life is slowing down and this Friday is my first day of college. Everything will start becoming routine, and I'll begin to have time to start working on RC! again, and if this community and Rob wants me, start working on this forum.

Sooo, that all being said, I'm looking forward to become a part of the community again, and if I'm needed, would be more than happy to start working on a solution for the problems the forum is having.

Thanks for weighing in LordZardeck. I shot Rob an email directing his attention to this thread and asking for his input on who will be providing technical support for the forums going forward.

Since other threads have mentioned the idea of spreading the wealth for Board privileges, are we relegating this type of position to just one guy? Lord Zardek's post should amplify the need to have a couple guys available. I think LZ and lp should both be TechAdmins.

I totally agree, and forgot to mention this is my post. I would LOVE to have lp work with me, as we can spread the load out.
