wasn't sure which forum to put this in...

I want to get involved with RTS (I don't use Hamachi) and would like a quick rundown about how to play games...I have d/l the sim and am wondering how to match up with other players...can I just run RTS and wait for someone to "hear"/notice me (like an open lobby area) or do I have to set up games ahead of time through messaging?

Without hamachi you have almnost no chance of finding a game(Then again you can't find a game with hamachi either) You have to set up the games thouigh messaging BTW.

Thanks, Red...can you explain why Hamachi is necessary,...and why I won't have any better chance if I install it?

The reason you won't find games is because for some reason no one's on. Also Hamachi bypasses firewalls thus allowing two people who are in the same network to play useing fake Ip adresses.

Red, giving opinionistic help is not really help. People do get on Hamachi.

Hamachi helps people play RTS because it:

1) Give's you an IP address which allows you to connect to others or host games.  Since many people have routers it simplifies the process.  Otherwise people would have to customize their router settings.

2) Gives you a chat program to see and talk to other players to set up your games.

If you don't want to use Hamachi and you can figure out how to host games yourself then you could use the private messaging on the boards to set up games with other players.
Have you visited the Land of Redemption today?

Yeah, RTS only connects through IPs, rather than having a built in system for connecting.

I wrote up a quick explanation of how to connect through RTS in my guide, found here: http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=12218.msg185593#msg185593 (linked to the part you're looking for)

I would encourage you to get hamachi as well. It's hard enough to find games with hamachi. It will be even more difficult without it.
