I would appreciate knowing who on the boards is interested in literature and writing. I happen to enjoy it and practice it, myself. I would post one of my personal essays, but I do not want to take up a massive amount of room on the page. It is long, and I don't know if I can fit it on without causing a problem. But I've never posted anything like that before, so I wouldn't know.
Anyway, here's a list of my essays:
Sports
The Power of the Attitude
Art or Science?
I might have a couple more, but these three are my major essays. I am in 6th Grade, therefore my writing might not be equal to your prior expectations.
BTW: If you request for me to type one of the essays into a post, I will try my best.
God bless you all continually,

I don't read as much as I should but I write alot. Usually the topics are boring because it's for school, but I do enjoy writing.

I read and write a lot, but I'm much more of a poet than an essayist.

I read as much as I can, and that is the equivalent of saying that a turtle runs as fast as he may.
Aside from that setback, I love to write. However, I am more of an essayist than a poet if I dare say so.

I read and write a lot. Probably more of the essayist than the poet. Most of the time I just journal whenever I think of something cool, usually while reading something.

Hello. Here is my new essay entitled The Power of Words.
The Power of Words
Words are not simply groups of symbols combining to make an expression. Words are containers of powers far beyond anything that man could ever create. The pen is always mightier than the sword.
When one speaks, he is conveying an emotion, feeling, or desire. But the overwhelming majority of this earth does not realize the true power of our words. Words can affect our own lives or the lives of those around us. The latter is likely more essential to know. And words can never be reversed. They can never be changed. They are immortal and undying. Ponder the fact that a single word has the power to change one's life forever. You may have just destroyed someone's dreams or future, or you may have just created it. We should always strive for the latter.
The Bible says many a time in the book of Proverbs that we are to discipline our tongues. It also states that a single of word of discipline to a wise man affects him more than does a hundred lashes on the back of a fool. This backs the maxim that the pen is mightier than the sword. Ponder this-the U.S. became involved in World War I because of the Zimmerman Note. This is because of the words on the note. Of course you already know this, but when you actually see the reality of it, you begin to obtain a deeper understanding of it. Many men's lives were lost because of the words in a single note.
Think also about how you came to know the Lord. You either read the Bible or heard about what is recorded in the Bible. The Bible is made of words. Jesus was the Word made flesh. Jesus himself was a word. This world was created by the power of a mere sentence. The words in the Bible changed your life forever-they gave you unyielding belief in God and His Son, Jesus. You will never be the same.
So keep this knowledge within your mind for the rest of your lifetime-words can either be as precious as gold purified by fire or as deadly as a bear robbed of her cubs.
I am in 6th grade, and I hope that you enjoyed it!

No, actually, this wasn't for school. I actually made it as an example of my writing to a friend from church. Did it last night. Do you like it?

For one, your write like a small child, but that's not really your fault, since your only in 6th grade. That should imporave with time. You have more than an average number of fragments and poor sentence structures in there. Also, there's a few facts wrong that diminish the overall theme. For example, the Zimmerman Note, while an interesting cite for this essay, was not the primary, or even one of the main reasons, for the US involvement in WWI. It was merely the front for the hidden goals. I'll blame poor schooling for that mistake, it wouldn't be the first time. Also, you don't have much of an introduction, conclusion, or thesis. Your theme can be derived from the essay, but it is very scattered and poorly defended.
You need to spend more time on your intro and conclusion. Make sure they are a full paragraph, not just a thought or two. Also, make sure you have a defined thesis. For this essay, you might choose "Words are more powerful than armies" or something to that effect. You need to state this in teh introduction. After that point, everything in your essay needs to have no other purpose than prove your thesis. At the end, you need to conclude with a summary of your case and a restatement of your thesis.
Not every essay you do NEEDS to be in this sort of format, but it's a good building block to learn how to write a defensive essay, which is what I would catagorize this essay as.

How about this. This was probably when I was at my prime as far as being an "essayist."
The Power of the Attitude
As you open your eyes, you realize another day is before you. You get up, yawn, rub your eyes, and start getting ready for the upcoming day. Then, the one of the most important choices you will ever make is set before you. How will I choose to behave and/or react to others today? In what manner should I pursue the day? Ponder this throughout the entire essay.
What I am about to discuss is this decision that you are given. It begins when you rise from your bed, and ends when you lay yourself down to sleep. I am going to discuss the power of one's attitude. If one awakens and dreads the day to come, despising the very thought of the process, they are usually in a sorrowful and complacent mood for the remains of the day. The cause of this is that they have their minds on the negative aspects of what is to come and what they must experience. This is a common phenomenon, as it is only human nature to act on one's emotions. But we must realize that we are not flawless, and our emotions do not always function in the fashion most preferable to us. What ew must do when we are dreading the negatives of the day we are only assuming will come is push the doubtful emotions away and savor the moment. Realize that this is a part of life. There are many occasions in which we must do what we do not desire to do. This is when we must acknowledge that it is unavoidable. One cannot change the fact that they must do what they must do, but they can change their perspective and attitude toward those things which are to come.
The attitude is an ominous tool which has the power to either make you or break you in this journey through life, and one must be trained in how to use it most effectively for the benefit of themselves and the benefit of those around them. Another point I wish to express is that one's attitude is quite contagious. By now you are aware of the fact that your companions in this journey put you in high regard. Our decisions matter much more than we often like to think. One's attitude can have an influence on another attitude, which can have influence on another attitude, etc. etc. This is one of the main reasons why a single attitude can be as dangerous as I warn that they are.
As I have previously stated, it is only natural to act on your emotions, but this generation is often afraid to face the fact that this is a foolish and unwise decision. One must learn that they cannot always control their emotions, but that they can always control the attitude, though can be quite difficult to do. In conclusion, discipline yourself and train yourself to control your attitude. Once you have mastered this dangerously essential technique, it will become natural to you, and you will become a more personable individual.
Responses to your criticism-I have a great education, and I do not believe I always write like a "small child." I have written far better essays than that. Also bear in mind that that was created in the process of a single night, meaning that I was tired, stressed (I wanted to get the essay to my friend the next morning), and that could be the reason I was not in top shape. Try this on for size.

There's no denying the fact you form sentences like a child. It's just where you are in your development. The use of the word "and" in the beginning of the sentence within an essay context is found almost exclusively in the writings of those who are either young or incompatent writers. You're young. Also, when you miss multiple facts, and I point it out, the fact that I blamed your education points to me trying to aid you in that I am giving you something to look towards as the cause of the mistkae so that it will not occur again. Sorry for helping again.

Backlash is the first reaction to crtisism, it's cool. Just learn that young isn't a critisism, it's a statement that is true about you. You are young any way we look at this.

Is it cool with you that I try my hand at one more essay? I would like to write one about the topic of "Chess." I will work harder on this one than on my other ones, put your constructive criticism to good use, and see how it turns out.

TBH, three short paragraphs isn't really enough to contain a worthwhile essay.

I should probably have said it was a "really short essay." I agree that it is not quite enough to be legitimately called an essay. But offer any criticism nonetheless.
