I used to play, but then I quit because I didn't like all of the coin tossing and chance involved.

Speaking of which, hey Alex and Westy... I just realized that the Regional Tournament in Kissimmee that you guys mentioned just passed. Did you guys change your mind?

We went, but we were able to get a super cheap deal on a hotel and a friend came with me from Pittsbrugh so since it wasn't just us anymore I never followed up.

Could you elaborate? How did y'all do?

I know that the last major tournament I went to (last year) I was overrun by several identical Virizion/Genesect decks. Online I have noticed a rise in Night March decks. What did you guys see at Regionals? Are Primal Traits Pokemon used a lot now?

Olijar went 4-4, I went 5-3-1, losing the last game to miss cut.

As far as the meta goes, basically there's a broken deck (Rayquaza) next format that OHKOs on Turn 1 while having a 220HP monster and the ability to cripple your opponent's setup.

But you didn't hear that from me. The deck is obvious but most people are going to play it wrong.

I figured Rayquaza EX cards were coming since Rayquaza is already OP'd in the video game (is it officially a Rayquaza Format yet?).

Rayquaza format isn't for another month and a half. Regional tournaments coming up will use them. If you want to come to GA, I'd be happy to send your son a top tier decklist, though the deck is very expensive.

The deck won't be that expensive if you get in at ground level, but after the first tournament it will be. I'm considering buying a lot of full arts to speculate.

If you are buying rayquaza from scratch, if anticipate 250 but I'd have to double check what all some of the staple cards are at. You'd need 11 new exs Id anticipate being around 10-15 though so that's a big investment.

You can play the game for much less than $250, you just will not be able to be competitive against top-tier decks. Theme/Starter decks run $15 or less. Booster boxes (36 packs)run about $90 online. Note that each booster pack comes with an online code card so you can get another booster pack for online play. Online play is free, and they give you several older starter decks so you can start playing right away. You can also buy just the online code cards for about 35-40 cents apiece.

So if you just want to learn how to play, then sign up online. However, understand that all the competitive decks have powerful ex cards that are almost impossible for Starter Deck cards to beat. Certain combinations of ex cards will defeat you in less than 10 turns. A savvy card player can beat some decks even with starters, but the top-tier decks are simply too much to handle, regardless of your skill level, unless you have equivalent types of cards (which are expensive to buy individually).

You might be able to get something for around 100 if that's what you want. The last couple sets have been good about giving us cheaper alternatives that are still good.

Even though Darkrai decks are a little bit outdated, they work awesome (at least the last time I played, about 1 month ago) and Darkrai decks are very cheap. They go for about $50-$100!

I mean, it's called Yveltal now, but yeah, Darkrai is definitely still good.

As far as being cheap goes, it depends on the variant you play, heavy Seismitoad line, aggro, etc. Night March and Flareon are undoubtedly cheaper.

Does anybody play the 3DS versions of Pokemon: X, Y, Alpha, and/or Omega?
   I have Y and my son has X.
I wouldn't mind adding friends for the Pokemon Friend Safari.  Just PM me (so to not derail this topic).

As far as I'm concerned you aren't derailing it. Guy asked if people play Pokemon. Could be VG or TCG.
