One of my favorite hobbies is poetry.  I enjoy reading them and writing some of my own. My style is mainly rhyming.  I would like to see some poetry that you have made up (humorous or serious).  It doesn't matter if it belongs in the 100 best poems of all time or a wall of a kids room as long as you wrote it.  Also, if you would like, you could give a little history of the poem (or leave that us to the readers).

Speak

As the smoke of the fires and the screams of the dying
Still cling to the air the people walk out
Beaten, bloodied, bruised, changed beyond all recognition
Out of the nightmare they go to rebuild their lives

Though they are free in body their minds will always remain
And they will remember what happened to those who remain there
And they shall speak
The Living shall speak for the Dead

When their stories are scoffed at and put to shame
By people who refuse to see
The bones of the Dead shall cry out from the earth
To testify the horrors are true
The Dead shall speak for the Living

After those who remember are gone
After the bones have crumbled to dust
Does what happen there be forgotten?
No WE must carry and remember the truth
We shall speak for the Dead and the Living

An unanswered question is infinitely better than an unquestioned answer.

Hawk and Crow:

Crow glided down the road with Hawk.
They saw a tree and stopped to talk.
Said Crow to Hawk "What do you do?"
Said Hawk to Crow "I fly like you."
"What do you eat?" said tiny Crow.
"Well of course all birds should know..."
There goes Crow, Munch munch munch.
Turns out Hawks eat Crows for lunch.

It's cold at the Cactus Warehouse, prickly, not soft...

Temp says thirty two

This is what God gives us to do.

December First, not the worst.

Head back to loading docks, where we ship lots of box,

Dim, dank, metal, cement...

but on Christmas morning, kids will be content.

Truckers huddle in cabs, takes a few hours,

watch snow fall on mountain towers.

Wife works the pallet jack, as hubby moves another stack.

Fork's tines lifts gifts ...moves from floor to door...

thought there were only seventy five skids, but discover there are more.

Sharpie marking labels, I break into a jog...

Phone is ringing, elves are singing, into season's cog...

toasty, hop from clog to clog.

Watch for cue to move a toy or two,

Waiting on crating...

I ponder the scenery...no greenery.

Old power lines disconnected,

speakers quiet, former tenant rented...

Random chain hangs, where heater used to be,

storage tells of lives lived, places to go, people to see...

Dual spot light, one is off, one is on.

In the dark and din, my thoughts turn in.

Although job is dull, cup is full.

Think on a lady in Haiti , no food for her child,

my troubles are mild...

Soon to be noon,

the crew...

goes home to turkey stew,

Thanks leftover from holiday brew.

Burrow hands in pockets,

feel fuzzy yarn in glove sockets...

Warm and wooly.

Insulated fingers, capped into one.

Fuzzy mittens?

A cross between two...fuzzy glittens...how fun!

My latest attempt to have a non-rhyming poem (all my other ones do rhyme).

The Pain Within

I smile to hide the sorrow
I laugh to hide the pain
I dance to hide the crumbing
I live to keep from dying

Yet when the darkness falls
And all becomes so quiet
That which in day I hid
Comes out of me so freely

Welcome to the boards Susan.  I'd attempt to write some poetry commemorating your arrival, but I regret that my poetry has a tendency to make Vogon's sound like Robert Frost :)

I recently wrote this sonnet, enjoy!

Love Shot

A long lasting love swells, heart larceny;
Lubricious language is lavished on me;
Feeling urgent, my lungs thump, breathlessly.
Vendetta relieved by vindication,
An ovation of infatuation
Is veneering my vivification.
The endless lies like bullets set in lead,
Lovelorn, longing, and lost, bludgeon dark red;
Helplessly, I’m left alone lying dead.
A single shining star slips from the sky,
Sinking from its ecstasy slowly, why?
This siren’s second lust hopelessly lost,
In a fleeting moment, temptress is tossed.
Excruciating heartless valentine.

edit- ps- the alliteration is LVLST.... LoVeLoST

My Mother

A mother is truly my very best friend
Ready to comfort
To help and defend
Her love has no limits
Her devotion no end
My mother is truly my very best friend

A poem I found from Adventures in Odyssey, not mine. :)

I wrote this imitation poem in response to George Darley's poem, "It is Not Beauty I Demand." I hope you enjoy it. I love poetry. I'll probably post a couple more on here. :)

It is Not Strength I Demand

It is not Strength I demand,
A wrinkled brow, the sun’s delights,
Nor the summer’s son, a calloused hand,
Nor the deep pride in men’s fist fights.

Tell me not of dark, hungry eyes,
Your handsome face filled with conceit,
Your chest where silent emotion lies,
Not allowing a gentle heart beat.

A tanned pair of rough cheeks,
Untainted by womanly tears;
A voice curt that roughly speaks
 Could never assuage my fears

These are just a start; what then are lips?
Capturing me before I may protest,
From my purity taking unbidden sips,
For certain you are like all the rest.

And what is pride but an enemy oft,
That takes youth to battles far away?
If your words are harsh and never soft
The cord of marriage is certain to fray

Unchecked desires can quickly burn,
With poisonous, passionate fume,
Many men like you proudly hold an urn,
Filled with the pure whom you consume.

For wrinkled brows—there’s anger within,
Are but the imprint of society,
A societal man my heart shall not win,
Especially one of hypocritical propriety.

Give me, instead of knuckles that bust,
A mated soul, a gentle heart,
Which with all secrets I could trust,
And his love to me he would wholly impart.

One in whose tender embrace I
Could release my burdens of the day
And at night could to the heavens fly.
Wrapped in his arms I would wish to stay.

My earthly beloved! Whose love
So impenetrable and deep,
That when my spirit ascends above
His would follow me in peaceful sleep.

2010 – The Poem

The most famous quote from Dickens’s book
Is what this year would be at first look
So we’ll lay the year down for you nice and flat
To see where we came and where we’re at

January
The first of the months were all too dark
For the burdens of work has been so stark
Yet through it all we held on tight
To each others love and our Lord’s good light

February
The darkness cracked and light burst through
When God saw our faith stand so true
From winning first place to going on call
His joy had fill us both up so tall

March
With bursting light we saw the way
A path He laid as clear as day
To take the challenge and a parent become
To foster kids who need some welcome

So off we ran straight down His road
With hours of classes and lots of workload
Yet time had allowed a family skit
And together our third year we stayed close-knit

April
With classes done with great hooray
The daughter came over without delay
We fell in love with her on the first day
A weekend with us, she was able to stay

When she went back, we hurried along
To complete the tasks, though it didn’t take long
Anticipation had both of us antsy
While waiting for God to bring His dearest three

The waiting, at last, had came to past
And the three had finally joined our cast
With a trip to the zoo and a dream job received
We kept down God’s path the way He perceived

May
Dickens’ words, in our lives, came true
For best and worse had came on through
With braces off and a beach in sight
With drawings and holes on walls so white

June
To hide one’s emotions so no one would know
The pain that lies deep and is ready to flow
To wonder how life will be when we depart
And try to heal the pain on our heart

Yet the kids’ events had come in abundance
With the youngest in preschool and the daughter’s performance
From Taekwondo for the oldest to summer camps for them all
The activities would keep them busy until fall

July
A family trip south to attend a tournament
And a kids museum filled with mind nourishment
Yet the LA fame had escaped us all
As a twenty minute drive became a two hour crawl

Back in town we saw the lights
As we stayed at the water park until late night
And with the van that we just bought
To VBS we went and our kids we brought

August
A family camping trip to Dinkey
Allowed us some family time with glee
Yet afterwards their school took flight
And the oldest one’s belt was no longer white

September
With school in flight, all became quiet
Only their homework could cause such a riot
Yet near the end everything came about
As the stress of the system had started to breakout

October
Birthdays come just once a year
Yet memories of them we hold so dear
From wife’s quiet evening to oldest son’s party
The festivity of them were a thing of beauty

With the three we went to the fair
To go on rides and eat without care
Then we took the youngest of them
To pumpkin patch and Little Gym

November
The holiday season had hit us full force
With Thanksgiving here we made the main course
With snowflakes made and stocking hung high
The oldest son’s belt is drown in yellow dye

December
To Napa with family for a night we will stay
And come back in time to see the daughter’s play
While going different places to see colorful lights
We look forward to Christmas with such a delight

So we end this time of laying our year flat
While marveling where we came and where we’re at
And looking back on His path, we have no fear
Where His path will take us during the new year

That was our "Christmas Letter" we sent out last year.  It did take me a couple of weeks to complete it but it was worth it (plus the final poem was filled with pictures that my lovely wife inputed).

One More Hour

Though lunch is still an hour away
   your stomach starts to grumble
You need a snack that’s small and light
   before you start to crumble
Yet in the break room is the answer
to that of which you seek
For only a dollar you can be filled
so why not take a peek

Believing Beyond

Beyond four concrete walls
Beyond the cold bars of age
Beyond the horizon I cannot see
I believe that’s where you’ll be
Waiting, just waiting, for me

Beyond the race I’m running
Beyond what’s left behind
Beyond denials in my mind
I believe that’s where you’ll be
Cheering, just cheering, for me

Beyond my wildest imagination
Beyond rules of our generation
Beyond attempts of separation
I believe that’s where you’ll be
Hoping, just hoping, for me

Beyond the lands of this place
Beyond the rainbow’s edge
Beyond the stars up in space
I believe that’s where you’ll be
Watching, just watching, for me

Beyond the realms to mortals unseen
Beyond watchful eyes so keen
Beyond warnings or reproach
I believe that’s where you’ll be
Longing, just longing, for me

Beyond my hopes and dreams
Beyond all this world seems
Beyond all sweet memories
I believe that’s where you’ll be
Waiting, just waiting, for me

Passing Time

I used to be alive,
and thrive in the wild,
and have best friends,
that I had as a child.

But times have passed,
we all have been bold,
for this was the past,
and now we are old.

Life comes and goes,
as new saplings grow,
like burried leaves,
in fresh silver snow.

The deathbed draws near,
a sad song to heart,
my friends will miss me,
but it's time to depart.
Mawwage, Mawwage is whot brwings us togethwa today, Mawwage...  ...ane Love, twue love...

Here's a poem I've been working on on and off for the last couple days. Not sure if I like the spacing, it makes the subtleties a bit more apparent but it interferes with the reading and rhyme scheme. As you'll be able to tell I'm a big fan of alliteration....

Waiting in a prison,
Shackled by sin was she.
Waiting until time has risen
Due to the bite of a flea.
This was of a time long before us.

Nimble, quick, clever, witty and coy was he
Powerful predilection created thus
For what concequence was given? Disgrace, disgrace.
The family honor would be another peasant
They're shameful yet too ignorant to show a remorseful face
No taxes or work to be done, simply obsolescent
The answer is clear, the action is needed
And for no longer shall it be sealed
The support had far been exceeded
And yet the savior has remained revealed.

Tell the stories and take the gifts
A white elephant
Strong yet swift
Incorrect and irrellevant
Over no going back fear and being afraid
Considering the suspect
Wrongly won with lies and writing
So many thoughts and
More fire fear and fighting
It was yesterday it happened or the day before
It was a week ago
More

The realization came to her, tossing to and fro
Is it bad or is there naturally two?
Justification be not needed
Clue in on who, you.
Yet the torment was deeply seeded.

It is too late to go back
The lengths of wit
Society is the one who will lack
The truth is misfit
The answer shall claim lest it be claimed
The action is over and no one knows
It is still in mystery, and shall not be named.
Yet even accepted it still begoes.

Now waiting in a prison,
Shackled by sin are we.

Tic Toc

Waves crash on a sandy shore
Tic Toc
Lightning flashes in the night
Tic Toc
A leaf falls to the ground
Tic Toc
Dust floats on a sunbeam
Tic Toc
A star shoots through the sky
Tic Toc
Rain splashes on the pavement
Tic Toc
These tiny moments
Tic Toc
These flashes in time
Tic Toc
Are Life
Tic Toc

I'll go with the second one, just because I have little appreciation for poetry, and that one's shorter.  ;)
