The new ASUS Transformer looks truly scrumptious!
OK, let's compare that with the laptop I'm looking at:

Transformer:                                   Pavillion:
Cost - $500                                    Cost - $350
        +$150 (keyboard dock)

Storage - 32 GB                             Storage 320 GB
RAM       -   1 GB                             RAM           4 GB

Monitor - 10 in                               Monitor - 14 in

Battery life - 12 hrs                        Battery life - 6.5 hrs

Ports - 1 USB, 1 SD                        Ports - 3 USB, 1 multi-media

Weight - 1.3 lbs                             Weight 4.7 lbs

DVD burner/player - NO                 DVD burner/player - YES

Processor - NVIDIA quad-core       Processor - AMD dual-core
                   Tegra 3                                          A4-3300M

To me it looks like the only advantages of the Transformer are smaller weight, longer battery life, and a faster processor (although I don't know how much faster).

All the other specs seem to make the Pavilion a TON better, and it is a TON cheaper.  Am I missing something?

It's a tablet, and tablets are all the rage despite basically being large smartphones.

I had to buy a laptop for my school, so if I'm gonna lug a machine that isn't pocket sized around, I'd rather use a normal computer with significantly better hardware.

That's not the model I was recommending.  And Brad was looking for a tablet.

OK, that compares the model you recommended, and the only advantage was less weight and longer battery life.  So why would I want to spend $200 more for an inferior product just because it is a tablet, and they are currently considered cool?

and they are currently considered cool?

Honestly, I feel this is a pretty big part of their appeal.

The concept of tablet computers is cool, but I'm gonna wait a few more years to pick one up.

Where'd you get the $400 figure?  Nick said he got the whole package for $350.

It all depends on the functions you perform that dictate what you get.

As for the Transformer, the Prime is quad-core and is hydro-oleophobic on the screen AND aluminum frame.  The current generation Transformer will soon be able to get Ice Cream Sandwich and for those that haven't heard...

it's only $250 at Best Buy on Black Friday!  ;)

Sorry.  I shouldn't have spoke of both generations in the same paragraph.

The next generation is quad-core, is called Prime and is $499.

The current generation is dual core and will be $250 at Best Buy on Black Friday.  While supplies last!

Dual core will support my needs just fine. Played with the Transformer yesterday at Best Buy. Realized that its more of the applications I am looking for than the tablet itself but I was impressed with the transformer. Hopefully my uncle can get me one on Friday for Christmas, if not I'll wait for the prices to drop when the quad core comes out.

So now to the next question: applications....
I love Adobe Reader X's ability to highlight and make comments...but I'm afraid I won't be able to do that easily using just the tablet...so now I'm looking for stylus applications

Here are a couple I have found so far:
http://www.cocoabox.com/penultimate  This is what had people tell me the IPAD was awesome about
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.apking.ultipen This claims to be the penultimate clone for Android...

I'd REALLY like to be able to make comments to my articles with one application and not jumping back and forth...ideas?

EDIT: This may be my answer http://www.cerience.com/products/reader/android
