But...they are special terms aren't they? I haven't done statistical stuff in a while.

Close, but not quite, because U corresponds to the logical or.  You either need the operator for the logical exclusive or or you need to exclude the intersection.

The symbol for exclusive or is a + sign with a circle around it.

Not quite Matt. "Exclusive or" would be P(A)+P(B)-2P(A ∩ B). Looking at the Venn Diagram, P(A) is the area of circle A, P(B) is the area of circle B. If you add the two, you are adding the intersection twice, so subtracting it once leaves the "inclusive or" and subtracting it twice leaves the "exclusive or".

Probability of event A + the Probability of event B minus Probability of A and B (simutlaneously).....   its the addition rule of statistics.  Nothing that you will ever use in real life.
